  7. Abstract:
  8. Capillary Imbibition is an important mechanism in producing oil from matrix blocks in fractured reservoirs. In a water-wet fractured reservoir, if the rise of water level in fracture is in a way that at all the moments the water front in fracture is lower than that in the matrix block we expect co-current imbibition. Iranian reservoirs have large matrix blocks and co-current imbibition can be expectable. Till this time, not many investigations have been done on co-current imbibition in and out of our country, Iran. In this thesis, an experimental investigation on co-current imbibition will be done for different conditions. The main goal of this thesis is the study of co-current imbibition in low IFT systems. So some experiments will be done for understanding the effect of IFT on rate of oil recovery and final oil recovery. The effect of lithology will be investigated. Sand stones and carbonate rocks are used. In all the experiments, the rocks should be strongly water-wet due to the need of having strong capillary pressure. For preparing low IFT fluids, depending on the type of rock cationic, anionic or non-ionic surfactants are used. Wet phase will be brine or distilled water and oleic phase is pure alkanes. All the experiment will be done in room temperature and pressure.Laboratory equipment which are needed: 1- soxhlet core cleaning, 2- water flooding apparatus, 3- amott cell, 4- high precision balance, 5- apparatus for measuring wettability. The results of this project are important in determining the co-current imbibition better and its role in oil production from fractured matrix blocks. The results show that lowering IFT will decrease recovery rate, while increasing ultimate recovery. Increasing wet phase viscosity will decrease imbibition rate
