  7. Abstract:
  8. Radial Flow compressors have broad applications in aero-space, transport, gas and oil industries and etc. This type of compressor is a better choice in meeting constraints on weight and space, especially when continuous high pressure stream in low volumetric rate is of interest.
Through main components of radial flow compressors, many investigations have been performed on design and optimization of the impellers and the diffusers, but the optimum design and optimization of compressor volute have received less attention.Volute design has direct and strong influence on compressor performance and its stable operating range.
In this research numerical and experimental investigations is performed to recognize volute flow structure and the main criteria in volute design in order to obtain volute optimum design procedure. Numerical studies contain developing a 1D performance code for compressor, different 1D codes for volute performance prediction as well as 3D modeling of whole compressor. The three-dimensional flow field model of the compressor is obtained by solving Navier-Stokes equations with SST turbulence model.
The experimental investigation is carried out in Turbocharger Laboratory at Sharif University of Technology, including compressor performance tests and measuring compressor component pressure losses, volute circumferential static pressure non-uniformity, and flow structure in volute using a Five-hole probe.
By reviewing the design methods of radial flow compressor volutes, the main criteria in volute primary designs are recognized and the most effective ones are specified. Then, an optimizing procedure is developed to select the volute configuration which shows better performance and causes lower net radial force on the impeller at desired mass flow rates.
Based on optimum model the volute is fabricated and tested on the test rig. The results show the compressor efficiency, pressure ratio as well as volute velocity distribution improvements in comparison with the original compressor
