  7. Abstract:
  8. Wall systems are an essential part of the buildings and their capacity should be properly considered in their design. However, the seismic behavior of building systems with in-filled walls and their interaction is a very complex issue, yet to be understood. Using the in-filled walls in the buildings without including them in the design process changes the whole behavior of the structural system as well as their failure mechanism under earthquake excitations. On the other hand, there have been extensive researches on rehabilitation of the structures with in-filled walls or designing them as the main or one of the lateral load carrying systems against seismic input. In this research, first the existing relations regarding the capacity of the in-filled walls as a lateral load carrying system and their sensitivity to different parameters was investigated. Then, the numerical models of a number of in-filled wall were prepared using the ABAQUS software. For verification purposes, the results of an experimentally in-plane tested, brick in-filled wall was utilized. The similarity of the obtained results from the numerical model and that of the experiments showed the acceptable accuracy of the prepared numerical models for the parametric studies. The obtained numerical results indicate that for bed joint sliding failure mode, the ASCE 41-13 standard criterion provides a close estimate of the wall shear strength. Also, for the diagonal tension failure mode as well as the toe-crushing failure mode, the Flanagan equations work well. Moreover, the 11.5% difference in obtained results for stiffness equation of ASCE 41-13 showed the sufficiency of ASCE41-13 relation for this purpose. Subsequently, the effects of different limitations were considered for the openings in the in-filled walls in terms of their size and location. On the other hand, the application of CFRP in improving the performance of the in-filled walls was evaluated. The results indicate that using the CFRP on one side of the in-filled walls does not work very well, while application of CFRP on both faces of the in-filled wall performs better. Furthermore, CFRP can change the path of load transfer and crack formation pattern. Finally, the results proves that using CFRP patches on weak parts of the in-filled walls for retrofitting purposes, could improve its performance, while its usage in improper places could result in the reduction of system capacity
