  7. Abstract:
  8. One of the most prominent issues in road safety is to observe reaction time and sight distance in geometric design. Various sight distances are available is Iran's specifications on "Geometric Design of Roadways" taken from the AASHTO standard from which stopping sight distance, decision sight distance and their corresponding car driver reaction times are noteworthy. This research puts effort in obtaining these values for bus drivers in Iran. To achieve this, a test designed using bus driving simulator apparatus, developed in K.N.Toosi University of Technology, was conducted on a number of bus drivers. Obtained results of driver behavior were then analyzed and compared to corresponding values from the AASHTO standard. Accordingly, bus drivers’ behavior studied in this investigation is different from car drivers’ behavior in AASHTO standard. Bus drivers showed slower reaction than car drivers. The results have shown that various maneuver reaction times in urban roads are higher than rural ones. Moreover, an increase in the amount of track information received and analyzed by the driver is shown to prolong driver reaction time. Drivers showed faster reaction in higher speeds. The results also reveal that drivers' reaction time typically increased with age and that compared to their younger counterparts, older drivers reacted to relevant stimuli somewhat later. Bus drivers' behavior in various types of examined maneuvers was found to have no significant interaction with driver literacy or education levels
