Planning of Energy Storage Systems with the Main Goal of Managing the Output Power of Wind Farms

  8. Uncertain fuel prices and also global climate changes are accompanied by some state initiatives such as renewable portfolio standards (RPS). This has caused a fast growth in the amount of renewable energy installed worldwide especially wind energy over last decades. However, the intrinsic characteristics of wind farms output power, i.e. intermittency and volatility of wind speed along with being non-dispatchable in output generation of wind turbine raises many new technical and financial challenges for power system operators and planners. Up to these issues, large level of wind power penetration causes a growing concern in wind energy curtailment issue which the wind farm’s operator may be forced to curtail the amount of extra wind power. In response to this restrictive issue, researchers have tried to suggest some short-term and long-term solutions to alleviate the wind energy curtailment issues. Amongst, employing energy storage systems (ESS) is introduced as an effective long-term solution to alleviate the wind energy curtailment problems. In this regard, this thesis proposes a framework for problem of energy storage system expansion planning studies in highly wind penetrated power system. Hence, two distinct planning study including planning of large scale energy storage systems and planning of distributed energy storage systems established in this thesis. As well as, one of the most important issues which should be considered in this study is to model properly uncertainties in problem with utilizing appropriate manner. The main goal of two proposed planning study is to determine the optimum location and capacity of energy storage systems in transmission level. In this regard, several criteria are considered as the objective functions of the proposed multi objective optimization procedure. These all the crucial and maybe contradictory aspects of the ESSs expansion problem are treated via a Posteriori MO optimization algorithm, i.e. the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA II). Finally, the proposed methodology is implemented on the modified IEEE 24-bus test system and its anticipated applicability is well verified
