  7. Abstract:
  8. Phase shifters are commonly used in the implementation of phased-array antenna systems. The function of these systems is highly dependent on the performance of phase shifters. In addition, phase shifter circuits are used in some applications such as antenna test and regulation, power amplifier linearization, and QAM modulator implementation, to name but a handful. In this project, design of phase shifter blocks, as well as limitations of fabrication on silicon substrate, is studied and these blocks are designed for maximum bandwidth and minimum sensitivity based on fabrication characteristics and environmental conditions. Design of a 6-bit phase shifter based on vector-sum method is the purpose of this project. In this method, arbitrary phase shift can be obtained by adding input quadrature signals, which are generated by active circuits, with appropriate amplitudes. The proposed structure for quadrature signals generation can increase the number of bits in a wide bandwidth range and plays a significant role in decreasing the silicon area consumption. As a result, RMS phase error can vary from 1° at TT corner (27 °C) to 3° at FF corner (-40 °C). Furtheremore, RMS amplitude error can change from 0.2 dB at TT corner (27 °C) to 0.36 at FF corner (-40 °C), and total current consumption is 10 mA. These circuits are laid out in 0.18-m RF CMOS technology
