  7. Abstract:
  8. Medical engineering advances in total joint replacements and society’s rising demand for long lasting materials, have proven it essential to manufacture materials that are more similar to the original tissue in the fields of mechanical, tribological and biological properties. Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene(UHMWPE), is a polymer widely used in arthroplasty applications due to its biocompatibility, chemical stability and proper mechanical properties. In this study, UHMWPE-HAp nanocomposites reinforced with Zirconia and Graphene were manufactured aiming to reach a structure that is more compatible with bone tissue and also to improve overall properties. First, using ultrasonication and solution mixing, Graphene with varying compositions of 0.1, 0.5 and 1 wt%, and Zirconia with 2, 6 and 10 wt% were dispersed separately in UHMWPE-10wt% HAp matrix, noting that the HAp concentration was taken as optimum according to literature. Nanocomposite powders were then manufactured using compression molding. Ultimately the samples were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis(TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC) and tensile, wear and biocompatibility tests were also carried out to evaluate mechanical, tribological and bilogical properties and dispersion states. Results indicate that by adding 0.5wt% Graphene, Elastic Modulus and Yield strength were increased by 42% and 11%. Coefficient of Friction was also reduced by 50% with the same Graphene content. By adding 6wt% of Zirconia, the above parameters were increased by 58%and 23%, respectively with a reduction of about 66% in Coefficient of friction. Biological tests result also indicates that HAp has proven to be beneficial in increasing Graphene’s adverse responses, while Zircona has promised excellent response and osteoconductivity
