  7. Abstract:
  8. Based on the new standards, less than 10 ppm sulfur is allowed for the automotive fuels. This has led researchers to try improving the present conventional methods as well as seeking alternative routes for refinement of the petroleum products so much to comply with the requirements. Since thiophenic fragments such as dibenzothiophene (DBT) are the most durable sulfur compounds in the current hydrodisulfurization method, many studies have been conducted over recent years on how to remove these compounds. In this thesis, the desulfurization of dibenzothiophene from gasoline via adsorption method was studied. In order to carry out the adsorption process, a nanocomposite of graphitic-carbon nitride and tin oxide (g-C3N4/SnO2) as an adsorbent, was prepared under microwave irradiation. The effect of the tin precursor on the final product was investigated and the results were discussed. The synthesized adsorbents were characterized by HR-TEM, XRD, EDS, BET, and FE-SEM.The adsorption process was carried out at ambient temperature and pressure with varying adsorbent concentration (2.5-100 g / L) and duration (15-360 min). Gas chromatography was used to calculate the concentration of dibenzothiophene in gasoline. The gasoline used in this thesis was obtained from a local petrol pump. The data obtained with tested with Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. The kinetics of the adsorption process was well explained by a pseudo-second-order model having the pseudo-second-order rate constant of 0.0025 g mg-1 min-1. Finally, the maximum rate of desulfurization of the gasoline sample was obtained to be about 75% when the initial amount of dibenzothiophene was 358.51 mgL-1
