  7. Abstract:
  8. While there are many advantages associated with concrete, including high compressive strength, durability and so forth, on the contrary, it has several disadvantages which may make engineers somewhat reluctant to use it. These include low tensile strength, high brittleness, low resistance to impact, large dimensions of structural cross sections, etc. In recent years, there have been many attempts to surmount these disadvantages by various means such as adding pozzolans, using FRPs, fibres, etc. In this project, the effects of using a special type of high strength steel fibre is studied. In order to investigate the effect of this fibre on the compressive behavior of concrete, 30 cylindrical specimens with dimensions of 300×150 (h×D) mm2 were constructed. The fibres were prepared and used in 3, 4 and 5 cm lengths and specimens were reinforced with 0.5, 1 and 1.5% of these fibres. After construction and curing of the specimens and prior to subjecting them to (destructive) compressive test, (non-destructive) ultrasonic test was carried out in order to measure their compressive strenghths. The following compressive tests revealed that, in general, adding this type of fibre to concrete increases the compressive strength. In this regard, when the fibre content was 0.5%, for the lengths of 3, 4 and 5 cm, the increase was equal to 30%, 14% and 30% respectively. When the fibre content was 1%, for the same lengths of 3, 4 and 5 cm, compressive strength decreased by 10%, increased by 15%, and again decreased by 9%. For fibres up to 1.5%, for the same lengths, an increase of 35%, a decrease of 10% and an increase of 34%, respectively, were observed in the compressive strength of the samples
