  7. Abstract:
  8. In this thesis, using superstructure concept, a method is presented to synthesize of new structures for thermal desalination processes along with their structural and operational optimization. The proposed superstructure is capable of producing various common (feed forward, backward, parallel cross feed) and non-common structures in evaporators, as well as in combination with flash stages and thermal vapor compressor. By using the GA (Genetic algorithm), the superstructure has been optimized to identify the optimal structures in both Iranian and international economic scales. Also comparisons were made between conventional structures at optimum state, to suggest superior structures at different fuel prices. Also a superstructure was created for the Synthesis of reverse osmosis networks combined with the thermal process. Then due to the changes in fuel price and in temperature and concentration of seawater, the most economical process was determined accordingly. The hybrid process was also optimized by using a hybrid superstructure of cogeneration of heat and power unit (CHP). Because of low fuel price in Iranian economic model, the application of cogeneration unit is not feasible, while in the international economic model, it is economically feasible to use this process
