  7. Abstract:
  8. Cellulose nanocrystals as a reinforcement in polymer nanocomposites are part of current research for reasons such as source renewable, biocompatibility, nanoscale dimensions, high specific surface area, and surface chemistry. This research used cellulose nanocrystals as a corrosion inhibitor carrier in epoxy-based composite with 1% by weight. In order to load the corrosion inhibitor, firstly, cellulose nanocrystals were surface modified by aniline so that they can spread well in the hydrophobic epoxy matrix. Different corrosion inhibitors were tested for adsorption on the surface of cellulose nanocrystals modified with polyaniline, but finally the acidic agent of phosphoric acid showed better efficiency. In order to better investigate the role of cellulose nanocrystals in corrosion control, polyaniline particles were synthesized with two dopants of hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid and their role in corrosion control was compared with cellulose/aniline hybrid nanoparticles. FTIR analysis confirmed the grafting of polyaniline on cellulose nanocrystals. By adding nanoparticles to epoxy and applying it on steel surfaces, coatings with an approximate thickness of 40 μm were prepared. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) was used to check the corrosion resistance of five coating samples and it was observed that the presence of modified cellulose nanocrystals generally causes the release of dopant when scratched, and on the other hand, this nanoparticle has a small absorption of corrosive substances. With the help of Zview software, the equivalent circuit of different systems has been drawn and quantitatively analyzed. With the help of quantitative comparison, the intelligent release of acid-base inhibitor from modified cellulose nanocrystals was investigated, and the resistance of the corrosion inhibitor release related to the C/P-PO4 sample reached 7913Ω on the second day of immersion, which is about 400% of the other samples. There have been more. On the other hand, by modifying the surface of cellulose nanocrystals and improving its dispersion in the epoxy polymer substrate, the coating showed a stronger barrier and, as a result, higher corrosion resistance
