  7. Abstract:
  8. Magnesium and its alloys have gained significant attention in medical applications due to their good biocompatibility. However, their widespread use has been limited by some inherent drawbacks, such as poor mechanical properties. The ZX00 magnesium alloy has been used in medical applications, including implants, due to its slow degradation rate and good ossification. However, this alloy lacks sufficient strength and ductility. The severe plastic deformation method can create an ultrafine grain structure and improve mechanical properties. In this study, to improve the mechanical properties and create an ultrafine grain structure, the multi-directional forging process was performed on homogenized samples at temperatures of 260 ℃, 300 ℃, and 340 ℃ under three passes and five passes, and extruded samples at temperatures of 260 ℃, 300 ℃, and 340 ℃ were subjected to one pass, three passes, and five passes. The highest compressive strength and microhardness were obtained in the extruded sample forged at 300 ℃ in the fifth pass, with an increase of 200% and 123% compared to the homogenized sample, respectively. The values of compressive strength and microhardness were found to be 362.5 MPa and 80.5 HV, respectively, with an average grain size of 1.7 microns and a fracture strain of 19%, which is suitable for medical applications. The highest fracture strain, equal to 31%, was obtained with an 82% increase compared to the homogenized sample, in the homogenized sample forged at 300 °C in the fifth pass. Additionally, the experimental results demonstrated that applying the extrusion process before the multi-directional forging operation created a more homogeneous microstructure with a lower average grain size and a decrease in the recrystallization temperature compared to the homogeneous forged sample
