  7. Abstract:
  8. This thesis presents an extension of an analytical method previously introduced for evaluation of the deformation capacity of RC columns. The method utilizes fiber elements to arrive at nonlinear moment-curvature relationship for each segment. An existing stress-strain model has been modified and used in this study. This model considers the crushing failure of confined concrete, buckling of longitudinal reinforcements in compression, and their fracture in tension. It also accounts for the spiral fracture. This method was employed to determine the force-displacement diagrams for circular RC columns dominated by flexural mode of failure, and was calibrated against a number of relevant experiments. A comparison of analytical and experimental results was found to be satisfactory. The method can readily be employed to investigate the failure behavior of RC columns in details. It is concluded that RC columns lose their lateral resistance either if the neutral axis reaches the centroid, or the longitudinal bars fracture. The method examines the effects of a number of parameters such as the reinforcement ratios and amount of axial load on the rotation capacity of circular RC columns as opposed to the models suggested by performance based design codes such as ASCE 41-06
