  7. Abstract:
  8. So far a number of solutions have been proposed to resolve some problems of steel plate shear walls including large induced loads on the surrounding members, late panel’s yielding along with lack of openings. One of the forms that can be considered for steel shear walls is braced shear panels.Regarding to the many advantages of this structural system, in this thesis steel shear panels with concentric or eccentric bracing have been introduced. For this purpose, first a procedure for plastic analysis and design, aiming to develop a predetermined collapse mechanism, is proposed. The results demonstrate that the closed-form analytical equations along with the extension of failure mode control procedure are useful for analysis and design of the proposed systems; Moreover, by development of the desired global yielding mechanism at target drift, the shear panels are yielded over the entire height of the building. In the following, results of the quasi-static experimentation of two full-scale specimens of stiffened along with unstiffened steel shear panels with welded connections are compared. By comparison of the performance parameters, construction cost, experimental observations and regarding to reduction of complete cyclic motion under real accelerograms and hence less pinching of hysteretic curve, it is concluded that unstiffened shear panels can be used in braced shear panel systems. Moreover, based on the numerical studies, acceleration-based similitude laws have suitable estimation of responses of the scaled specimens. The effects of size and location of shear panels on behavior of models with different span length to height ratios were parametrically studied using linear and nonlinear analyses. The findings show that by reduction of panel’s size and placement of it at the middle of the frame or up to 25% upper, the structural behavior of the system is improved. Furthermore, reduction of the panel’s size should be proportional to the number of stories and the values of l/L and h/H should be equal. In addition, the respective tentative values for seismic performance factors of the considered concentrically and eccentrically braced shear panel models are Ω0=5.6, Cds=18.2, Ru=13.1 and Ω0=4.4, Cds=17.2, Ru=11.5. Moreover, the equation of T=0.14H0.44 is suggested for estimation of fundamental period. For simple modeling of this structural system, two equivalent bracing systems, considering stiffness, strength and strain-hardening ratio are recommended. On the basis of the obtained results, it is concluded that the proposed models of CTO-AY and CTM-AY can be used for preliminary analysis of these systems. Moreover, due to axial deformation of the columns, it is not possible to estimate the lateral displacement of multistory buildings by summation of the corresponding values for single story buildings
