A coupled bending-torsion model for electrostatically actuated torsional nano/micro-actuators with considering influence of van der Waals force

    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Volume 224, Issue 8 , 2013 , Pages 1791-1800 ; 00015970 (ISSN) Moeenfard, H ; Darvishian, A ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In the current paper, a coupled two degree of freedom model which considers both bending and torsion of the supporting torsion beams is presented for electrostatically actuated torsional nano/micro-actuators under the effect of van der Waals (vdW) force. Newton's second law is utilized for finding the normalized equations governing the static behavior of the actuator. The implict function theorem is then utilized for finding the equations governing the pull-in state of the actuator. The related results show that torsion model considerably overestimates the pull-in parameters of the nano/micro-actuator. The concept of the instability mode is introduced, and it is shown that when the ratio of...

    , Article ASME 2011 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2011, 11 November 2011 through 17 November 2011, Denver, CO ; Volume 11 , 2011 , Pages 523-529 ; 9780791854976 (ISBN) Moeenfard, H ; Darvishian, A ; Ahmadian, M. T ; ASME ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The coupling effect between torsion and bending in nano/micromirrors under the combined effect of capillary force and van der Waals (vdW) force is presented in this paper. At the first, the dimensionless equations governing the statical behavior of the nano/micromirror are obtained using the minimum total potential energy principle. Then the equations governing the pull-in state of the mirror are obtained using the implicit function theorem. The related results show that neglecting bending effect can lead to considerable overestimation in predicting the pull-in limits of the nano/micromirror under combined vdW and capillary forces. It is observed that vdW force reduces the pull-in angle and...

    Abstract
The scattering of an oblique plane progressive monochromatic acoustic field upon a laminated composite cylindrical shell is studied based on the three-dimensional exact equations of anisotropic elasticity. Each layer of laminated structure is made of helically filament wound (fiber reinforced) homogeneous material whose degree of anisotropy is considered as monoclinic type. An approximate laminate model along with the local transfer matrix solution is used to solve the state space governing formulation within each layer. Considering the perfect bonding between the adjacent layers, the global transfer matrix is constructed as the product of the local transfer matrices employed to solve for...

Adaptive sliding mode control of a piezo-actuated bilateral teleoperated micromanipulation system

    , Article Precision Engineering ; Volume 35, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 309-317 ; 01416359 (ISSN) Motamedi, M ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Vossoughi, G ; Rezaei, S. M ; Zareinejad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Piezoelectric actuators are widely used in micro manipulation applications. However, hysteresis nonlinearity limits the accuracy of these actuators. This paper presents a novel approach for utilizing a piezoelectric nano-stage as the slave manipulator of a teleoperation system based on a sliding mode controller. The Prandtl-Ishlinskii (PI) model is used to model actuator hysteresis in feedforward scheme to cancel out this nonlinearity. The presented approach requires full state and force measurements at both the master and slave sides. Such a system is costly and also difficult to implement. Therefore, sliding mode unknown input observer (UIO) is proposed for full state and force...

    Abstract
This paper presents dynamic and vibration analysis of a flight vehicle with consideration of the free fitting between its two sections. Using the Lagrangian approach, a general analytical model is developed for a non-spinning elastic vehicle in planar motion. The model contains rigid body motions and bending deformations of two sections of the flight vehicle and a nonlinear rotational spring that models the freeplay between the two sections. To express bending deformation, the mode summation method is applied. It is shown that freeplay in the joints significantly affects the trajectory of the flight vehicle. Numerical examples reveal the effect of a joint's nonlinearity on the trajectory and...

    Abstract
Within the compressive sensing (CS) framework, one effective way to increase the likelihood of successful signal reconstruction is to employ random processes in the construction of the sensing matrix. This study presents a 3D holey cavity, with diverse frequency modes, to spectrally code, that is, randomize, the ultrasound wave fields. The simulated results show that the use of such a cavity enables imaging simple or complex targets, such as spheres or the letter E, by only a single transceiver—something that is not possible without the use of a coding structure like the cavity. The effect of noise on imaging results and the size of the targets on the first-order Born approximation (BA) are...

    Abstract
Micro/Nano mechatronic systems might be defined as systems that include nano- or micro-scale components. These components can be sensors, actuators, and/or physical structures. Furthermore, the high-precision control laws for such small scales are important to ensure stability, accuracy, and precision in these systems. In this writing, four categories of such small-scale systems are considered by providing multifarious novel or key examples from the literature: control engineering and modeling, design and fabrication, measurement engineering, and sensor/actuator development. The applications discussed in the examples vary from nano-positioners, crucial in systems such as atomic force...

    Abstract
Currently, the HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) therapy method is known as one of the most advanced surgical techniques of tumor ablation therapy. Simulation of the non-linear acoustic wave and tissue interaction is essential in HIFU planning to improve the usefulness and efficiency of treatment. In this paper, linear, thermoviscous, and nonlinear equations are applied using two different media: liver and water. Abstract
This paper analyzes the deflection and pull-in behaviors of cantilever and doubly clamped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under electrostatic actuation using the homotopy perturbation method. The effects of electrostatic force and interatomic interactions on the deflection and pull-in instabilities of CNTs with different lengths, diameters, and boundary conditions are investigated in detail. The results reveal that larger diameters and shorter lengths result in higher pull-in voltages. Moreover, CNTs with doubly clamped boundary conditions, in comparison with cantilever boundary conditions, are more resistant to pull-in

Then, the displacement fields used for the analysis are coupled using the equilibrium equations of the composite beam....

It is shown that the EKM results are independent of the initial guess function. It is also shown that since EKM is highly convergent, practically one iterate is...

    Abstract

The effects of different design parameters on the mirror's pull-in angle and pull-in voltage are studied and it is found that vdW force can considerably reduce the stability limit of the...
