Experimental Study of Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) on Cu-alloys, Electrocatalysts in Alkaline Solution and Theoretical Investigation of Oxygen Adsorption on Cu-alloys Nano-clusters

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Arab, Ramezan (Author) ; Gobal, Fereydoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied on Cu, Pd, Rh, Pd-Cu and Rh-Cu alloys in alkaline solution. Pd-Cu and Rh-Cu alloys were prepared by electrochemical methods. On copper electrode it is found that direct oxygen reduction is accompanied by the electrochemical reductions of copper oxides. Also, mechanism and kinetics of reaction change as the amount of copper oxides increase on the surface. For electrodeposited alloys, it is indicated that the reactivity of Pd-Cu and Rh-Cu alloys toward oxygen reduction is higher than pure Pd and pure Rh. The maximum reactivity among Pd-Cu alloys is related to the sample with 24.5% copper content while the maximum...

    Abstract
Rammed earth structures have attracted the attention of engineers and researchers in recent years due to their economic advantages, sustainable development, and environmental sustainability. One of the main concerns for public opinion for acceptance of Rammed Earth as a reliable construction material is their durability. Previous studies have investigated the durability of rammed earth materials by conducting wet and dry cycle test, accelerated erosion test, and rain simulation in the laboratory environment. This research studied the durability of cement stabilized rammed earth (CSRE) for one year under the aggressive environments. Three cement contents were considered for preparing the CSRE...

We also observed a low detection limit for glucose of 1 μM. Correlation of the electronic and geometric modifications with the electrochemical performance characteristics enhanced catalytic activity of the electrode by...

    , Article International Journal of Chemical Kinetics ; Volume 44, Issue 11 , 2012 , Pages 712-721 ; 05388066 (ISSN) Danaee, I ; Jafarian, M ; Forouzandeh, F ; Gobal, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Nickel-modified glassy carbon electrode (GC/Ni) prepared by galvanostatic deposition was used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose in alkaline solutions where different electrochemical methods were employed. In cyclic voltammetry studies, in the presence of glucose an increase in the peak current of the oxidation of nickel hydroxide is followed by a decrease in the corresponding cathodic current. This suggests that the oxidation of glucose is being catalyzed through mediated electron transfer across the nickel hydroxide layer comprising nickel ions of various valence states. Under the chronoamperometric regime, the reaction followed a Cottrellian behavior and the diffusion...

Under the CA regime, a higher catalytic rate constant obtained for methanol oxidation was in agreement with CV measurements. Lower charge transfer resistance was obtained for low carbon alcohols oxidation and significantly higher...

Oxide layer produced on the surface of all electrodes in alkaline solution under anodic scan participates in ethylene glycol electrooxidation. Oxidation current observed in the reverse scans for platinum and gold are higher than those observed in...

    Abstract
An electro-catalysis non-enzymatic electrode is proposed based on alloyed Pt/Ni nanowire arrays (NWAs) for the detection of glucose. The electrode structure is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The resulting Pt/Ni NWAs electrode shows high electrocatalytic activities towards the oxidation of glucose in alkaline solution. Consequently, a sensitive amperometric detection of glucose is achieved under 0.45 V vs. SCE with a low detection limit of 1.5 μM within a wide linear...

    Abstract
Copper-palladium alloys of different compositions are electrodeposited on nickel from aqueous solutions. These alloys are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The catalytic activity of these alloys toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline solution is investigated using rotating disk electrode (RDE). The number of electrons transferred per O2 molecule (n) obtained at different potentials is close to 2 at low overpotential indicating HO2- formation and gradually increases to 4 at higher overpotentials indicating full reduction to OH-. It is shown that Cu-Pd alloys are better electrocatalysts than Pd with Pd-Cu-1 having 24.5%...

Electrochemical investigation of electrodeposited Fe-Pd alloy thin films

    , Article Electrochimica Acta ; Volume 56, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 483-490 ; 00134686 (ISSN) Rezaei, M ; Ghorbani, M ; Dolati, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the present study, the electrodeposition of Fe, Pd and Fe-Pd alloys, in alkaline solutions, has been investigated. Using ammonium hydroxide and trisodium citrate as the complexing agents, it has been shown that the co-deposition of Fe and Pd is achieved due to diminishing the difference between the reduction potentials of these two metals. Cyclic voltammetry results clearly show that the electrodeposition processes are diffusion-controlled and the diffusion coefficients of Fe2+ and Pd2+ are 1.11 × 10-6 and 2.19 × 10-5 cm2 s -1, respectively. The step potential experiments reveal that nucleation mechanism is instantaneous with a typical three-dimensional (3D) growth. At low overpotentials,...

Simulation of SO2 absorption in a venturi scrubber

    , Article Chemical Engineering Communications ; Volume 197, Issue 7 , Feb , 2010 , Pages 934-952 ; 00986445 (ISSN) Taheri, M ; Mohebbi, A ; Taheri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this study, a three-dimensional mathematical model, based on a nonuniform droplet concentration distribution, has been developed to simulate gas absorption in a venturi scrubber. The mass transfer process was illustrated by assuming the liquid phase as a combination of droplets and film. The flow, just as the annular two-phase flow, includes a flow of liquid film layer on the walls and a flow of gas and liquid drops in the core. Peclet number was determined using experimental data reported by Viswanathan et al. (1984) for distribution of droplets across the cross section of the scrubber. The mathematical model for gas absorption was justified by comparing the theoretical predictions with...

Diffusion coefficient of ascorbate ion measured under both voltammetric regimes is around 1.4 × 10-5 cm2 s-1. Impedance spectroscopy measures the capacitances associated with double layer and adsorption around 50 μF cm-2 and 4 mF cm-2 as well as the adsorption and decomposition resistances (rates). © 2009 Elsevier B.V.
