    Abstract
In this paper, a bottom-up hydrothermal route is reported for the synthesis of oxygen and nitrogen co-decorated carbon quantum dots (CQDs) using ammonium hydrogen citrate (AHC) as a single precursor. DLS data approved the formation of 4.0 nm (average size) CQDs. XRD pattern shows the interlayer spacing (002) of 3.5 Å for CQDs, which is exactly the same as that of crystalline graphite. XPS and FTIR spectra verified the formation of oxygen and nitrogen functional groups on the CQDs surface. Co-decorated carboxyl, hydroxyl and amine groups on the CQDs surfaces make them as promising polyelectrolyte for gene delivery. Toxicity assay showed a survival rate of 70% under different incubation times...

    Abstract
In this study organically modified nanoclay were prepared by exchanging of the cetyltrimethylammonium (CTAB), with inorganic/metal ions/cations in montmorillonite structure. To investigate the influence of the amount of modifier on basal spacing and subsequent removal efficiency of hydrocarbon, different amount of modifier was used. The modified and unmodified nanoclays characterized by XRD, CHN and FTIR techniques. The X-ray diffraction results showed that the interlayer spacing of CTAB-modified clays increased from 12 to 22Å. The effectiveness of the sorbent materials for sorption of a range of products was investigated using crude oil, kerosene, gasoline and toluene. The process...

Cobalt salophen-modified carbon-paste electrode incorporating a cationic surfactant for simultaneous voltammetric detection of ascorbic acid and dopamine

    , Article Sensors and Actuators, B: Chemical ; Volume 121, Issue 2 , 2007 , Pages 530-537 ; 09254005 (ISSN) Shahrokhian, S ; Zare Mehrjardi, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
A carbon-paste electrode (CPE) is modified by incorporating cobalt-5-nitrosalophen (CoNSal) and tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB). The mechanism of electrocatalytic oxidation of dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA) at the surface of the CoNSal-modified CPE containing various percents of TOAB is thoroughly investigated by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. In solutions of pH 5.0, in which all studies are performed, DA exists as the positively charged species whereas AA is mainly as the neutral form. Therefore, the favorable ionic interaction (electrostatic repulsion) between the cationic form of DA and the cationic surfactant (TOA+) caused increasing the overvoltage for DA and...

In situ LIF temperature measurements in aqueous ammonium chloride solution during uni-directional solidification

    , Article Experiments in Fluids ; Volume 48, Issue 4 , April , 2010 , Pages 651-662 ; 07234864 (ISSN) Shafii, M. B ; Lum, C. L ; Koochesfahani, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We present in situ whole-field measurements of the temperature field using laser-induced fluorescence in a study of bottom-chilled uni-directional solidification of aqueous ammonium chloride. We utilize a two-color, two-dye, ratiometric approach to address the significant spatial and temporal variations of laser sheet intensity field due to refractive index variations caused by the evolving concentration and temperature fields. In our work we take advantage of two temperature sensitive fluorescent dyes with opposite temperature sensitivities in order to increase the overall sensitivity and temperature resolution of the measurements. The resulting temperature sensitivity (about 4% K-1) is...

Using nucleators to control freckles in unidirectional solidification

    , Article Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science ; Volume 33, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 1209-1215 ; 08941777 (ISSN) Shafii, M. B ; Alavi Dehkordi, E ; Esmaily Moghadam, M ; Mohseni Koochesfahani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Buoyancy-induced fluid flow, which is responsible for most forms of macro-segregation and channel-type segregates in castings, is not directly controllable. If left uncontrolled, natural convection will contribute to non-uniform distribution of alloy constituents and grain structure during solidification of a casting. Non-uniform distribution of chemical composition and physical structure in an alloy casting can significantly affect the reliability of mechanical components. Therefore, materials with acceptable defects can be produced only by trial-and-error and their acceptability is determined by costly inspections. We present a novel technique to control the formation of chimneys and...

Stereoelectronic effects: A simple yet powerful tool to manipulate anion affinity

    , Article Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry ; Volume 13, Issue 7 , Dec , 2015 , Pages 2170-2176 ; 14770520 (ISSN) Samet, M ; Fattahi, A ; Kass, S.R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Royal Society of Chemistry  2015
    Abstract
Different strategies are employed in designing strong and selective anion receptors but stereoelectronic effects have been largely ignored. In this work, the stereo configuration of a non-interacting ether is found to have a large impact of more than two orders of magnitude on the binding of a rigid diol with tetrabutylammonium chloride in acetonitrile-d3. A favorable carbon-oxygen dipole and an intramolecular C-H⋯OH hydrogen bond in an equatorially substituted ether is found to be energetically more important than a stabilizing hydrogen bond in the corresponding axially oriented alcohol. IR spectroscopy is also used to probe the structures of the bound complexes and several binding motifs...

    Abstract
In industrial liquid-liquid extraction processes, the feed is not clean liquid but there are various kinds of contaminants in the feed entering the extractors. In this regard, a two-impinging-jets contacting device (TIJCD) was tested through the standard test system recommended by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE), namely toluene-acetone-water, in the presence and absence of various types of surface-active agents (SAAs). The influences of anionic, cationic, and nonionic SAAs such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTMAC), and octylphenol decaethylene glycol ether (Triton X-100), respectively, on the extraction efficiency and overall...

Electrochemical investigation of electrodeposited Fe-Pd alloy thin films

    , Article Electrochimica Acta ; Volume 56, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 483-490 ; 00134686 (ISSN) Rezaei, M ; Ghorbani, M ; Dolati, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the present study, the electrodeposition of Fe, Pd and Fe-Pd alloys, in alkaline solutions, has been investigated. Using ammonium hydroxide and trisodium citrate as the complexing agents, it has been shown that the co-deposition of Fe and Pd is achieved due to diminishing the difference between the reduction potentials of these two metals. Cyclic voltammetry results clearly show that the electrodeposition processes are diffusion-controlled and the diffusion coefficients of Fe2+ and Pd2+ are 1.11 × 10-6 and 2.19 × 10-5 cm2 s -1, respectively. The step potential experiments reveal that nucleation mechanism is instantaneous with a typical three-dimensional (3D) growth. At low overpotentials,...

    Abstract
In this work, a novel method to synthesis of an acrylic superabsorbent hydrogel was reported. In the two stage hydrogel synthesis, first copolymerization reaction of acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylamide (AM) monomers using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator was performed. In the second stage, the resulted copolymer was hydrolyzed to produce carboxamide and carboxylate groups followed by in situ crosslinking of the polyacrylonitrile chains. The results from FTIR spectroscopy and the dark red-yellow color change show that the copolymerization, alkaline hydrolysis and crosslinking reactions have been do take place. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) verifies that the synthesized...

    , Article Iranian Polymer Journal (English Edition) ; Volume 19, Issue 8 , May , 2010 , Pages 571-579 ; 10261265 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Soleyman, R. A ; Ghasemzadeh, H ; Salimi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A series of superabsorbent composites were synthesized through graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) onto carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in the presence of celite powder using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linking agent and ammonium persulphate (APS) as an initiator. The chemical structure and thermal properties of the composite hydrogels were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and TGA methods, respectively. Morphology of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In free-state, the swelling conditions and hence the related data are not real, because in all their applications the swelling particles of superabsorbent must absorb aqueous solutions while...
