The nano-sized manganese oxide shows efficient catalytic activity toward water oxidation and the epoxidation of olefins in the presence of cerium(iv) ammonium nitrate and hydrogen peroxide, respectively

Stereoelectronic effects: A simple yet powerful tool to manipulate anion affinity

    , Article Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry ; Volume 13, Issue 7 , Dec , 2015 , Pages 2170-2176 ; 14770520 (ISSN) Samet, M ; Fattahi, A ; Kass, S.R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Different strategies are employed in designing strong and selective anion receptors but stereoelectronic effects have been largely ignored. In this work, the stereo configuration of a non-interacting ether is found to have a large impact of more than two orders of magnitude on the binding of a rigid diol with tetrabutylammonium chloride in acetonitrile-d3. A favorable carbon-oxygen dipole and an intramolecular C-H⋯OH hydrogen bond in an equatorially substituted ether is found to be energetically more important than a stabilizing hydrogen bond in the corresponding axially oriented alcohol. IR spectroscopy is also used to probe the structures of the bound complexes and several binding motifs...

    Abstract
In this article, we synthesize a novel gelatin-based superabsorbent hydrogel via graft copolymerization of mixtures of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AAm) onto gelatin backbones. The polymerization reaction was carried out in an aqueous medium and in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and N,N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. The hydrogel structures were confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The effect of grafting variables, i.e. concentration of MBA and APS, AA/AAm weight ratio, and reaction time and temperature, was systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with swelling capacity as high as possible. The swelling behavior of these absorbent polymers...

    Abstract
In this paper, a bottom-up hydrothermal route is reported for the synthesis of oxygen and nitrogen co-decorated carbon quantum dots (CQDs) using ammonium hydrogen citrate (AHC) as a single precursor. DLS data approved the formation of 4.0 nm (average size) CQDs. XRD pattern shows the interlayer spacing (002) of 3.5 Å for CQDs, which is exactly the same as that of crystalline graphite. XPS and FTIR spectra verified the formation of oxygen and nitrogen functional groups on the CQDs surface. Co-decorated carboxyl, hydroxyl and amine groups on the CQDs surfaces make them as promising polyelectrolyte for gene delivery. Toxicity assay showed a survival rate of 70% under different incubation times...

Turnip (brassica rapa) peroxidase: Purification and characterization

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 48, Issue 23 , Volume 48, Issue 23 , 2009 , Pages 10614-10618 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Motamed, S ; Ghaemmaghami, F ; Alemzadeh, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    ACS  2009
    Abstract
Partial purification of plant peroxidase from turnip (Brassica rapa) was optimized. Aqueous two phase system and precipitation by ammonium sulfate (as two parallel purification methods) were used. Polyethylene glycol/ammonium sulfate/NaCl (25:7:3%, w/v) system followed by gel-filtration chromatography gave a purification factor of about 36 fold. On the other hand, ammonium sulfate precipitation (60-80% deg) followed by gel filtration gave only about 13 purification fold. Hence, the aqueous two-phase system was more efficient and useful method as a primary purification step since it was less laborious, less time-consuming, and led to more purification factor. The partially purified turnip...

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 514 , February , 2012 , Pages 150-156 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Asadirad, M ; Yoozbashizadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Nanocomposites of Ce-TZP/Al 2O 3 were synthesized by aqueous combustion, and urea, ammonium acetate and glycine were used as mixtures of fuels with the corresponding metal nitrates. Thermodynamic modeling was conducted to anticipate the effect of the alumina content on the exothermicity of the combustion procedure. The thermodynamic properties of the combustion reaction indicated that as the alumina content increased, the amount of gases produced during the reaction increased with a decrease in the adiabatic temperature. Furthermore, to reduce the particle size of the powders, a series of combustion reactions were performed to optimize the fuel composition and alumina content. Ce 0.1Zr 0.9O...

    Abstract
The properties of metallic nanorods vary due to changes in their composition, size and shape, which all depend on the aspect ratio of the nanorods. This work focuses on the optimization of the aspect ratio of silver nanorods using response surface methodology (RSM). Seed-mediated approach, which is the newest method with less difficulty, has been used for the synthesis of silver nanorods. First, silver ions were reduced with sodium borohydride in the presence of sodium citrate dehydrate, as stabilizer. Then, the prepared seeds were added to a solution containing more metal salts, a weak reducing agent (ascorbic acid) and a rod-like micellar template (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB)....

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 50, Issue 8 , 2011 , Pages 4608-4617 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Haghdoost, A ; Dehkordi, A. M ; Darbandi, M ; Shahalami, M ; Saien, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Mass-transfer rates to and from drops in liquid-liquid extraction processes are often reduced by the presence of contaminants. To design an industrial extractor, it is essential to consider this contamination effect in a quantitative manner. To achieve this goal, an experimental investigation was conducted on the mass transfer into single drops for n-butanol-succinic acid-water, as the recommended test system by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE). The effects of anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), cationic (dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, DTMAC), and nonionic (octylphenol decaethylene glycol ether, Triton X-100) surfactants on the hydrodynamic and mass-transfer...
