    Abstract
    In this thesis, an enhanced local mean-field (MF) model that is suitable for simulating the electroencephalogram (EEG) in different depths of anesthesia is presented. The main building elements of the model (e.g. excitatory and inhibitory populations) are taken from two pioneer MF models designed by Steyn-Ross et al and Bojak & Liley, and then a new slow ionic mechanism is included in the main model. Generally, in mean-field models, some sigmoid-shape functions determine firing rates of neural populations according to their mean membrane potentials.     A new class of design has been introduced in the RF circuits and Frequency Synthesizers, which is based on the digital circuits. Implementation of the digital synthesizers suppresses the need to use loop filter and thus reduces the loop lock time.     Abstract
    Ageing is one of the main contributing factors towards increasing arterial stiffness, leading to changes in peripheral pulses propagation. Therefore the characteristics of the photoplethysmogram (PPG) pulse, especially the rising edge and peak position, are greatly affected. In this study, the PPG pulse rising edge and corresponding peak position have been investigated non-invasively in human subjects as a function of age. Fifteen healthy subjects were selected and grouped in five age intervals, from 20 to 59 years, based on their comparable systolic-diastolic blood pressure and PPG amplitude.     Abstract
    The resulting motion in waves can be considered as a superposition of the motion of the body in still water and the forces on the restrained body. In this study the effect of added mass fluctuation on vertical vibration of TLP in the case of vibration in still water for both free and forced vibration subjected to axial load at the top of the leg is presented. This effect is more important when the amplitude of vibration is large. Also this is important in fatigue life study of tethers. The structural model used here is very simple.     Abstract
    With a complete accounting of hydrodynamic forces on the translational-radial dynamics of a moving single-bubble sonoluminescence, temporal evolution of the bubble trajectory is investigated. In this paper, by using quasi-adiabatic evolution for the bubble interior, the bubble peak temperature at the bubble collapse is calculated. The peak temperature changes because of the bubble translational motion. The numerical results indicate that the strength of the bubble collapse is affected by its translational movement.     Abstract
    In this paper, a new non-linear D/A converter (DAC) is presented. This D/A converter uses neural network to approximate a sine function. It is targeted for direct digital frequency synthesizers in which the phase to sine amplitude conversion is usually performed using a ROM. Utilizing the proposed DAC, the power hungry ROM is removed. A design example is presented and the performance of the DAC is compared to the conventional method. The impact of non-idealities on the performance of the system is also investigated. © 2006 IEEE

    Abstract
    This paper deals with blind separation of finite alphabet sources where we have n sources and only one observation. The method is applied directly in time (spatial) domain and no transformation is needed. It follows a two stage procedure. In the first stage the mixing coefficients are estimated, and in the second stage the sources are separated using the estimated mixing coefficients. We also study restrictions of this method and conditions for which its performance is acceptable. Simulation results are presented to show the ability of this method to source separation in images and pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) signals

    In this era of digital communication systems, different factors are included in efficiency of a transceiver system. Binary PAM systems are one of these transceiver systems. Many aspects of such a system has been considered yet but this field needs more research on because this is the base of any communication system.     Time domain equalizers are used in the receiver of a discrete multitone (DMT) receiver to compensate the channel effects on the received signal. There are a lot of DMT equalization algorithms presented in the literature, but recently a novel Per Tone equalizer structure was proposed which offers some advantages over the previous traditional ones. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the important concepts of this technique and evaluate its initialization complexity.     In this study, a novel artificial intelligence-based approach is presented to directly estimate the surface topography. To this aim, performance of different artificial intelligence-based techniques, including the multi-layer perceptron neural, radial basis function neural, and adaptive neural fuzzy inference system networks, in estimation of the sample topography is investigated.     The finite element method and molecular dynamics simulations are used for modeling the AFM microcantilever dynamics and the tip-sample interaction forces, respectively.     This paper introduces a novel low-complexity multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detector tailored for single-carrier frequency division-multiple access (SC-FDMA) systems, suitable for efficient hardware implementations.     Objectives: Investigation of the amplitude modulation of alpha-band EEG oscillations (i.e., grouping of alpha-band activities) by delta-band EEG activities in various depths of anesthesia (DOA).
