The Effect of Adding Pozzolans on the Mechanical Properties of Latex-Modified Concretes and Investigating the Separation of Fibers in Them

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tohidloo, Mohammad (Author) ; Khalu, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research investigates the impact of a new type of latex called Carboxylated Styrene Butadiene Rubber (XSBR) on the mechanical properties and permeability of latex-modified concrete. Latex-modified concretes offer numerous advantages, but a key challenge is the reduction in compressive strength, hindering their widespread use, especially in structural applications. In the initial phase of this study, the influence of XSBR latex is examined, and four different dosages of XSBR latex are incorporated into concrete. Keeping other parameters constant, especially the water-to-cement ratio, a comparison is made between different mix designs. All specimens are subjected to two different curing...

    Abstract
A hybrid method consisting of principal component analysis (PCA), multiple linear regressions (MLR), and artificial neural network (ANN) was developed to predict the retention time of 149 C3 - C12 volatile organic compounds for a DB-1 stationary phase. PCA and MLR methods were used as feature-selection tools, and a neural network was employed for predicting the retention times. The regression method was also used as a calibration model for calculating the retention time of VOCs and investigating their linear characteristics. The descriptors of the total information index of atomic composition, IAC, Wiener number, W, solvation connectivity index, Xlsol, and number of substituted aromatic...

    Abstract
Breast Cancer (BRCA) is the most common threat in women worldwide. Increasing death rate of diagnosed cases is the main leading cause of designing specific genosensors for BRCA − related cancer detection. In the present study, an ultrasensitive label − free electrochemical DNA (E − DNA) sensor based on conducting polymer/reduced graphene − oxide platform has been developed for the detection of BRCA1 gene. An electrochemical method was applied as a simple and controllable technique for the electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide and also, electro − polymerization of pyrrole − 3 − carboxylic acid monomer. The results of the present work show that the polymer − coated reduced graphene −...

    , Article Hydrometallurgy ; Volume 78, Issue 1-2 SPEC. ISS , 2005 , Pages 129-136 ; 0304386X (ISSN) Moradkhani, D ; Urbani, M ; Cheng, C. Y ; Askari, M ; Bastani, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Metal pH50 and ΔpH50 values were determined and compared for a number of organic systems to select a synergistic system for the separation of Cd from Zn. The largest ΔpH50(Zn-Cd) value was obtained with HRJ-4277 (nonylsalicylic acid)/Cyanex 471X (triisobutyl phosphine sulphide or TIBPS) system and reached 1.53 pH units, indicating excellent separation of Cd from Zn with this system. Shellsol 2046 was chosen as the diluent of the system due to its larger ΔpH50(Zn-Cd) and excellent phase separation compared with other diluents. Distribution isotherms and subsequent McCabe-Thiele diagrams indicate that 99% Cd could be extracted in two stages at pH 3.80 and A / O ratio of 1.5 : 1. The extraction...

    Abstract
In the present study the effect of nanodiamond (ND) on the adsorption capacity of Drug has been investigated. Thermal oxidation nanodiamond (OND) was used as adsorbents for Methotrexate adsorption. The surface properties of NDs were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and zeta potential. It was determined that thermal oxidation changed the surface properties of ND, including increase the amount of carboxylic acid groups and decreasing the zeta potential of ND by increasing the thermal oxidation time. The adsorption experiments showed that untreated ND (UND) has large adsorption capacity and fast adsorption kinetic for methotrexate (MTX). These results suggest that the...

Thermal, mechanical and acoustic damping properties of flexible open-cell polyurethane/multi-walled carbon nanotube foams: Effect of surface functionality of nanotubes

    , Article Polymer International ; Volume 60, Issue 3 , NOV , 2011 , Pages 475-482 ; 09598103 (ISSN) Bandarian, M ; Shojaei, A ; Rashidi, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article demonstrates the properties of open-cell flexible polyurethane foams incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Three different types of highly functionalized nanotubes having carboxyl, hydroxyl and amide functional groups were synthesized. Neat polyurethane foam and three nanocomposite foams filled with 0.1 wt% of treated nanotubes were prepared. It was found that thermal stability, mechanical properties and acoustic damping were improved significantly by incorporation of small amounts of nanotubes. The nanotubes modified with carboxyl groups were found to have much more influence compared to the other two functional groups, possibly due to better interfacial interaction and...

    Abstract
In this paper, attention is paid to synthesis and swelling behavior of a superabsorbent hydrogel based carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The physical mixture of CMC and PAN was hydrolyzed in NaOH solution to yield hydrogel, CMC-poly(NaAA-co-AAm). During alkaline hydrolysis, the nitrile groups of PAN were completely converted to a mixture of hydrophilic carboxamide and carboxylate groups followed by in situ crosslinking of the grafted PAN chains. A proposed mechanism for hydrogel formation was suggested and the structure of the product was established using FTIR spectroscopy. The reaction variables affecting the swelling capacity of the hydrogel were systematically...

    Abstract
In this work, a novel method to synthesis of an acrylic superabsorbent hydrogel was reported. In the two stage hydrogel synthesis, first copolymerization reaction of acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylamide (AM) monomers using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator was performed. In the second stage, the resulted copolymer was hydrolyzed to produce carboxamide and carboxylate groups followed by in situ crosslinking of the polyacrylonitrile chains. The results from FTIR spectroscopy and the dark red-yellow color change show that the copolymerization, alkaline hydrolysis and crosslinking reactions have been do take place. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) verifies that the synthesized...

Synthesis and characterization of LiNiO2 nanopowder with various chelating agents

    , Article Journal of Nanomaterials ; Volume 2010 , March , 2010 ; 16874110 (ISSN) Balandeh, M ; Asgari, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
LiNiO2 powders were synthesized with acrylic acid, citric acid, oxalic acid, and triethanolamine (TEA) as a chelating agent. Crystallized LiNiO2 was synthesized in air at a calcinations temperature of 500 °C for 12 hours, when the molar ratio of chelating agents to total metal ion (RPM) was 1.0. The TEA-assisted method had the highest intensity ratio of (003)/(104) peaks of X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrum. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis indicates that the sample prepared with triethanolamine obtained the smallest particle size with average particle size of only 12nm. The results indicate that chelating agents have an important role in the intensity ratio of (003)/(104)...
