Effects of intermediate principal stress parameter on cyclic behavior of sand

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, Issue. 5 , 2014 , pp. 1566-1576 Jafarzadeh, F ; Zamanian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Soils have an anisotropic response, and changing the inclination (α) and magnitude of the major principal stress will affect collapse potential and brittleness, as well as shear strength and shear stiffness. In this paper, the effect of the stress path, with changes in intermediate principal stress, on the dynamic behavior of Babolsar sand, is studied. A series of undrained monotonic and cyclic tests on loose sand with induced anisotropy were conducted by using automatic hollow cylinder apparatus. Special attention was paid to the significant role of the intermediate principal stress parameter (b) in the deformation behavior of the sand during cyclic loading. Results show that at constant α,...

Characterization of the effect of disturbance on the hydro-mechanical behavior of a highly collapsible loessial soil

    , Article Unsaturated Soils: Research and Applications - Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Unsaturated Soils, UNSAT 2014 ; Vol. 1, issue , 2014 , p. 261-266 Haeri, S. M ; Khosravi, A ; Ghaizadeh, S ; Garakani, A. A ; Meehan, C. L ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Highly collapsible loessial soils are characterized by an open void structure that can experience significant settlement upon loading. In the field, these partially saturated Aeolian deposits are particularly susceptible to wetting-induced collapse. Due to difficulties in preparing undisturbed specimens from highly collapsible soils, previous studies have generally performed laboratory tests on reconstituted specimens with different water contents and densities, and the effect of disturbance on the initial state of the soil was ignored. Disturbance in highly collapsible soil specimens may significantly affect the natural composition of the soil matrix, the non-homogeneous distribution of...

    2013
    Abstract
Hot compression tests were carried out on a Fe-29Ni-17Co alloy in the temperature range of 900 °C to 1200 °C and at strain rates of 0.001-1 s-1. Dynamic recrystallization was found responsible for flow softening during hot compression. The flow behavior was successfully analyzed by the hyperbolic sine equation and the corresponding material constants A, n and α were determined. The value of apparent activation energy was determined as 423 kJ/mol. The peak and steady state strains showed simple power-law dependence on the Zener-Hollomon parameter. The dynamic recrystallization kinetics was analyzed using Avrami equation and the corresponding exponent was determined to be about 2.7. This...

    2013
    Abstract
The current study proposes a simple constitutive model that integrates the kinetics of precipitation during static aging and the kinetics of precipitate dissolution during preheating to deformation temperature to predict the hot flow behavior of AA6063 alloy. The model relates the flow behavior of the age-hardenable alloy to the alloy chemistry, thermal history as well as deformation temperature, strain, and strain rate by means of a physically based model. Different aging conditions, including supersaturated solid solution and overaging conditions with different deformation parameters, were assessed. Each part of the model was in good agreement with those of experimental and other model...

    , Article International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics ; Volume 57 , 2013 , Pages 39-49 ; 00207462 (ISSN) Mondali, M ; Abedian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The creep deformation behavior of short fiber composites has been studied by an approximate analytical model. A perfect fiber/matrix interfacial bond is assumed and a power law function is considered for describing the steady state creep behavior of the matrix material. The results obtained from the proposed analytical solution satisfy the equilibrium and constitutive creep equations. Also, a parametric study was undertaken to define the effects of geometric parameters on the steady state creep strain rate of short fiber composites. The present model is then validated using the results of finite element method. The predicted strain rate and stress components by the proposed analytical...

    Abstract
Thermo-mechanical responses, developed microstructure, and mechanical properties in friction stir welding (FSW) of artificially aged AA2017 plates were investigated. A finite element analysis was first employed to evaluate hot deformation behavior of the alloy during welding. Also, hardness, yield strength, and microstructure of the welded alloy were examined using the results of the model and experimental testing. It was found that strain and temperature fields during welding are asymmetrically distributed and the maximum temperature locates in advancing side. Furthermore, considerable grain refinement is observed in the stir zone where recrystallized grains in the range of 3 to 8 m are...

    Abstract
Three deformation routes for recently invented severe plastic deformation (SPD) method named tube channel pressing (TCP) have been introduced in this paper. The effects of routes, back pressure and friction have been investigated on deformation behavior of commercially pure (CP) aluminum tubes. Utilizing finite element analysis provides a broader understanding of these effects through different deformation routes. Due to the large values of strains accumulated in TCP, modified Estrin-Tóth-Molinari-Brechet (METMB) constitutive model has been employed in finite element analysis program to consider a realistic flow stress of the material in TCP. Employing experimental procedures confirms the...

Then, based on the kinematically admissible velocity and strain fields and using the upper bound theorem the ECAE load is predicted. It was found that at constant inner corner angle of ECAE die, with decreasing of outer curve corner the...

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 535 , February , 2012 , Pages 216-221 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Mostafaei, M. A ; Kazeminezhad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The behavior of hot extruded Al-6Mg during hot deformation has been studied using hot compression test. The tests were performed at temperatures of 350, 450, and 550°C and strain rates of 0.001, 0.1, and 1s -1. Due to the effects of friction and adiabatic heating generated during compression, the attained true stress-true strain curves have been corrected. After correction of friction effect, the virtual work hardening has been removed from stress-strain curves. The flow stress increases and reaches a steady state after correction of adiabatic heating effect. Corrected curves and microstructural examinations exhibit the occurrence of dynamic recovery during hot compression of the alloy. The...

    Abstract
The present paper reports the effects of Nd:YAG laser welding on the microstructure, phase transformation, cyclic deformation behavior, and corrosion resistance of Ti-55 wt.% Ni wire. The results showed that the laser welding altered the microstructure of the weld metal which mainly composed of columnar dendrites grown epitaxially from the fusion line. DSC results indicated that the onset of the transformation temperatures of the weld metal differed from that of the base metal. Cyclic stress-strain behavior of laser-welded NiTi wire was comparable to the as-received material; while a little reduction in the pseudo-elastic property was noted. The weld metal exhibited higher corrosion...

Molecular dynamics simulation study of the effect of temperature and grain size on the deformation behavior of polycrystalline cementite

    , Article Scripta Materialia ; Volume 95, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 23-26 ; 13596462 (ISSN) Ghaffarian, H ; Karimi Taheri, A ; Kang, K ; Ryu, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
Molecular dynamics simulations combined with quantitative atomic displacement analyses were performed to study the deformation behaviors of polycrystalline cementite (Fe3C). At low temperature and large grain size, dislocation glide acts as the preferred deformation mechanism. Due to the limited number of slip systems at low temperature, polycrystalline cementite breaks by forming voids at grain boundaries upon tensile loading. When the temperature rises or the grain size reduces, grain boundary sliding becomes the primary mechanism and plastic deformation is accommodated effectively

Incorporating aspect ratio in a new modeling approach for strengthening of MMCs and its extension from micro to nano scale

    , Article Advanced Composite Materials ; Volume 19, Issue 4 , Apr , 2010 , Pages 299-316 ; 09243046 (ISSN) Zehtab Yazdi, A ; Bagheri, R ; Zebarjad, S. M ; Razavi Hesabi, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The strengthening behavior of particle reinforced metal-matrix composites is primarily attributed to the dislocation strengthening effect and the load transfer effect. To account for these two effects in a unified way, a new multi-scale approach is developed in this paper incorporating the aspect ratio effect into the geometrically necessary dislocation strengthening relationships. By making use of this multi-scale approach, the deformation behavior of metal-matrix composites (MMCs) and metal-matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) as a function of size, volume fraction, aspect ratio, etc. of the particles has been investigated. Comparison with the previously proposed models and the available...
