Experimental Investigation of a Nnanofibrous Membrane Preparation for Dye Removal from Colored Wastewater

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Abolhassan (Author) ; Vossoughi, Manouchehr (Supervisor) ; Mahmoodi, Niyaz Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, an adsorptive affinity membrane has been prepared based on the combination of the nanofiber structure’s intrinsic characteristic in the dye adsorption and its membrane filtration properties. Electrospinning method has been used to prepare chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers. The morphology and properties of the prepared nanofibrous membranes were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), image processing, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Also, the major drawback of electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENMs) is their low mechanical resistance. So,...

Synthesis of Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) Nano-hybrids for Removal of Organic Pollutants from Petrochemical and Colored Wastewaters

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Abdi, Jafar (Author) ; Vossoughi, Manouchehr (Supervisor) ; Mahmoodi, Niyaz Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Alemzadeh, Iran (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Physical processes such as adsorption and membrane filtration are in progress and considered as efficient methods in separation and treatment of organic pollutants from petrochemical and colored wastewaters. The advantages of these methods include high energy efficiency, low cost, facile process, and regeneration and implementation ability for a wide range of contaminants. Nevertheless, requirement of suitable materials as adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, capability of preparing membranes based on these materials, optimization of process conditions and removal improvement have still remained as the main challenges; therefore, these topics have been mentioned as main aims of this...

Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework Nano-Porous Catalyst for Degrading Organic Pollutants (Dyes) in Wastewater

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirzaieazar, Hedieh (Author) ; Kazemeini, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Mahmoodi, Niyaz Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nanoporous metal-organic frameworks are among the new and advanced compounds that have attracted attention of researchers due to their unique properties such as high surface area, high porosity and regular structure. These compounds can catalyze and degrade pollutants. Due to the high consumption of organic compounds, especially textile dyes, the pollution caused by wastewater is increasing in various industries. Disposal of wastewater containing organic pollutants into aquatic environments can alter the natural color, change the taste of water and disturb the life of living organisms. If the dyes are left untreated in aquatic ecosystems, they can remain in the environment for a very long...

Biodecolourization and Biodetoxification of Dye-containing Wastewaters from Textile Dyeing by the Native Fungal Strain Phanerochaete Chrysosporium and Trametes Species

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alimohammadi, Fatemeh (Author) ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Mosavi, Abas (Supervisor) ; Ghobadi Nehad, Zahra (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Treatment of Wastewater of textile industries has been always challenging due to the high organic matter which is a suitable substrate for the growth of microorganisms. Also, discharge of wastewater into the open water causes water adsorbing more sunlight, raising water temperature and therefor decreasing dissolved oxygen. In addition, the acidity of wastewater decreases the quality of agricultural soil. Among wastewater treatment methods, biological methods are cheaper, environment friendly, and produce less by product. Among all the microorganism responsible for biological treatment, fungi and enzymes are more applicable. Especially white-rot fungi are the most effective microorganism to...

Removal of Non-biodegradable Contaminants from Colored Textile Wastewater Using Electro Oxidation Process

    Abstract
Herein, a magnetic zirconium-based metal-organic framework nanocomposite was synthesized by a simple solvothermal method and used as an adsorbent for the removal of direct and acid dyes from aqueous solution. To enhance its adsorption performance, poly(propyleneimine) dendrimer was used to functionalize the as-synthesized magnetic porous nanocomposite. The dendrimer-functionalized magnetic nanocomposite was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, and vibration sample magnetometer. The obtained results revealed the successful synthesis and functionalization of the...

    Abstract
In the present work, a series of polysulfone (PSf) mixed-matrix nanofiltration membranes containing highly water stable UiO-66 metal-organic framework (MOF) were prepared via a simple phase inversion technique. At first, UiO-66 particles were synthesized via a solvothermal technique, activated via two various activation methods, including Soxhlet extraction and centrifugation methods. Then their adsorption performance was investigated for adsorption of anionic methyl orange (MO)/methyl red (MR) and cationic methylene blue (MB)/malachite green (MG) dyes from water. The activated UiO-66 particles via the Soxhlet extraction method (named S-UiO-66) showed better performance for dye adsorption...
