Exact formulations of non-linear planar and spatial Euler-Bernoulli beams with finite strains

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science ; Volume 226, Issue 5 , 2012 , Pages 1225-1236 ; 09544062 (ISSN) Abedinnasab, M. H ; Zohoor, H ; Yoon, Y. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Using Hamilton's principle, exact equations of motion for non-linear planar and spatial Euler-Bernoulli beams are derived. In the existing non-linear Euler-Bernoulli beam formulations, some elastic terms are dropped by differentiation from the incomplete Green-Lagrange strain tensor followed by negligible elastic deformations of cross-sectional frame. On the other hand, in this article, the exact strain field concerning considerable elastic deformations of cross-sectional frame is used as a source in differentiations. As a result, the achieved closed-form equations are exact and more accurate than formerly reported equations in the literature. Moreover, the applicable dynamic model of...

Multi-scale modeling of plastic deformations in nano-scale materials; transition to plastic limit

    , Article International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering ; Volume 109, Issue 8 , 2017 , Pages 1180-1216 ; 00295981 (ISSN) Khoei, A. R ; Jahanshahi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A large amount of research in computational mechanics has biased toward atomistic simulations. This trend, on one hand, is due to the increased demand to perform computations in nanoscale and, on the other hand, is due to the rather simple applications of pairwise potentials in modeling the interactions between atoms of a given crystal. The Cauchy–Born (CB) hypothesis has been used effectively to model the behavior of crystals under different loading conditions, in which the comparison with molecular dynamics simulations presents desirable coincidence between the results. A number of research works have been devoted to the validity of CB hypothesis and its application in post-elastic limit....

Modeling magneto-mechanical behavior of Fe3O4 nanoparticle/polyamide nanocomposite membrane in an external magnetic field

    , Article Journal of Composite Materials ; Volume 52, Issue 11 , 2018 , Pages 1505-1517 ; 00219983 (ISSN) Tayefeh, A ; Wiesner, M ; Mousavi, A ; Poursalehi, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The magnetic response of a polyamide nanocomposite membrane under applying a magnetic field has been modeled to evaluate elastic deformation order of magnitude. A PA-Fe3O4 nanocomposite membrane is considered to be modeled under influence of volume plane stress caused by a magnetic field. The modeling of the mechanical behavior of Fe3O4-PA nanocomposite membrane suggests that nanoparticle displacements within the nanocomposite, in the order of 200 nm under applying an external magnetic field, are greater than free volumes or porosities of the polyamide membrane. The membrane can be excited to mechanically vibrate by applying an alternating magnetic field lower than 0.1 T. As the results...

An Implicit Algorithm for Numerical Simulation of Large Deformation Structures with Incompressible Fluid Flow

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Fouladi, Nematollah (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The fluid structure interaction (FSI) problems are widely encountered in many industrial applications in mechanical, aerospace, biomedical, marine, and wind engineering. The main contributions of this research are focused on simulating flow with moving or deforming boundaries including FSI problems with large movement or deformations. In this regard, a hybrid finite-element-volume (FEV) method was used in an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. In this research, a new layer-by-layer mesh movement strategy was developed to perform the unstructured grid movement more robustly. This strategy converts the complex data structure of an unstructured grid to a simple quasi-structured data...

Modelling of Elastic and Plastic Deformation Fracture and Crack Propagation in 3D Problems Using Adaptive Finite Element Method

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Moslemi, Hamid (Author) ; Khoei, Amir Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Numerical methods in fracture and crack propagation problems usually involve high computational costs. Adaptive finite element method is one of the techniques which can be used to simulate the crack propagation with an acceptable accuracy. In this thesis, various constitutive models are implemented for simulation of fracture, including the linear elastic fracture mechanics, cohesive zone model and continuum damage mechanics. The fracture mechanical evaluation is performed on a general integral technique for non-planar curved cracks in LEFM. In the second model, a bilinear cohesive zone model is applied to implement the traction-separation law. The Lemaitre damage model is employed and the...

Continuum based modeling and simulation of the manipulation task is presented. The proposed nanomanipulation model consists of all effective phenomena in nanoscale. Nanoscale interaction forces, elastic deformation in contact areas, and friction forces in tip/nanoparticle/substrate system are considered. The utilized friction models...

Modeling of rate dependent finite deformation viscoelastic behavior of foams

    , Article 2008 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, IMECE 2008, Boston, MA, 31 October 2008 through 6 November 2008 ; Volume 12 , 2009 , Pages 435-442 ; 9780791848739 (ISBN) Anani, Y ; Asghari, M ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The behavior of foams is typically rate-dependent and viscoelastic. In this paper, multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient and the second law of thermodynamics are employed to develop the differential constitutive equations for isotropic viscoelastic foams experiencing finite deformations, from a phenomenological point of view, i.e. without referring to micro-structural viewpoint. A model containing an equilibrium hyperelastic spring which is parallel to a Maxwell model has been utilized for introducing constitutive formulation. The deformation gradient tensor is decomposed into two parts: elastic deformation gradient tensor and viscoelastic deformation gradient tensor. A...

An additive theory for finite elastic-plastic deformations of the micropolar continuous media

    , Article Acta Mechanica ; Volume 206, Issue 1-2 , 2009 , Pages 81-93 ; 00015970 (ISSN) Ramezani, S ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sohrabpour, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this paper, the method of additive plasticity at finite deformations is generalized to the micropolar continuous media. It is shown that the non-symmetric rate of deformation tensor and gradient of gyration vector could be decomposed into elastic and plastic parts. For the finite elastic deformation, themicropolar hypo-elastic constitutive equations for isotropicmicropolar materials are considered.Concerning the additive decomposition and the micropolar hypo-elasticity as the basic tools, an elastic-plastic formulation consisting of an arbitrary number of internal variables and arbitrary form of plastic flow rule is derived. The localization conditions for the micropolar material obeying...

Effect of interface stresses on the elastic deformation of an elastic half-plane containing an elastic inclusion

    , Article International Journal of Solids and Structures ; Volume 46, Issue 14-15 , 2009 , Pages 2897-2906 ; 00207683 (ISSN) Avazmohammadi, R ; Yang, F ; Abbasion, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The effect of the interface stresses is studied upon the size-dependent elastic deformation of an elastic half-plane having a cylindrical inclusion with distinct elastic properties. The elastic half-plane is subjected to either a uniaxial loading at infinity or a uniform non-shear eigenstrain in the inclusion. The straight edge of the half-plane is either traction-free, or rigid-slip, or motionless, which represents three practical situations of mechanical structures. Using two-dimensional Papkovich-Neuber potentials and the theory of surface/interface elasticity, the elastic field in the elastic half-plane is obtained. Comparable with classical result, the new formulation renders the...

Hardening materials modeling in finite elastic-plastic deformations based on the stretch tensor decomposition

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 29, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 161-172 ; 02613069 (ISSN) Ghavam, K ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2008
    Abstract
In this paper, finite elastic-plastic deformations of hardening materials are analyzed based on the modified multiplicative decomposition of the left stretch tensor. This decomposition is the modified form of the Metzger and Dubey's decomposition used in the frame work of the principal axes of the left stretch tensor. For this purpose, basis-free corotational constitutive equations are derived for elastic-plastic hardening materials with the Armstrong-Frederick kinematic hardening and isotropic hardening models. The proposed governing equations are solved with different corotational rates for the simple shear problem with the material properties of the stainless steel SUS 304. The results...

Probabilistic tolerance analysis of compliant assemblies

    , Article 2007 World Congress, Detroit, MI, 16 April 2007 through 19 April 2007 ; 2007 ; 01487191 (ISSN) Babaei, E ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAE International  2007
    Abstract
Tolerance analysis is essential for estimation of final error of key product characteristic (KPC) in a mechanical assembly caused by errors in production and assembly of individual parts. Many mechanical assemblies, especially in automotive and aerospace industries, include sheet metal parts with a small ratio of thickness to width or length. Such parts are substantially flexible and thus, are prone to large errors due to elastic deformations during assembly production. Phenomena such as deformation due to fixture force, spring back, welding distortion and so on are common to such parts. Unlike tolerance analysis of rigid parts, here, the elastic deformation of the parts plays a significant...

Modeling Optomechanical Behavior of Optical Metasurfaces Subject to Light and Elastic Deformation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talebi Habibabadi, Sajjad (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Optical metasurfaces are 2D structures of a repetitive arrangement of a number of nanoparticles that are artificially constructed and do not exist in nature. Important applications of optical metasurfaces are meta lenses, flexible solar cells and extremely small antennas. Fabricating surfaces with nanoparticles of proper geometry under light radiation along with elastic deformation, we can have optical metasurfaces with selective reflection or transparency in the visible spectrum. The aim of this project is modeling of an optical metasurface with elastic deformation leading to change of color and transparency. For this purpose, assuming vertical light radiation and linear polarization, we...
