    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 435-436 , 2006 , Pages 653-657 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Abachi, P ; Masoudi, A ; Purazrang, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
In present work, an attempt has been made to investigate the wear behavior of particle reinforced composites based on one of the proper magnesium alloys. The SiCP/QE22 composites and QE22 unreinforced specimens were produced via the powder metallurgy route. The volume fractions of SiC particles with three different shapes, i.e. sharp, blocky and round, were selected in the range of 10-25 vol.%. The dry sliding tests were conducted on unreinforced matrix and SiCP/QE22 composites using pin-on-disk apparatus, according to ASTM G99-95a standard. The applied loads were selected as 3, 5 and 20 N. The tests were carried out under sliding speeds of 0.5 and 1.2 m/s. In all tests, the sliding...

    Abstract
The MgO-supported Fe-Co-Mn catalysts, prepared using co-precipitation procedure, were tested for production of light olefins via CO hydrogenation reaction. The effect of a range of drying conditions including drying temperature and drying time on the structure and catalytic performance of Fe-Co-Mn/MgO catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was investigated in a fixed bed micro-reactor under the same operational conditions of T = 350 °C, P = 1 bar, H2/CO = 2/1, and GHSV = 4500 h-1. It was found that the catalyst dried at 120 °C for 16 h has shown the best catalytic performance for CO hydrogenation. Furthermore, the effect of drying conditions on different surface reaction rates was also...

Effect of bonding parameters on microstructure development during TGTLP bonding of Al7075 alloy

    , Article Philosophical Magazine ; Vol. 94, issue. 11 , Mar , 2014 , pp. 1166-1176 ; ISSN: 14786435 Afghahi, S. S. S ; Ekrami, A ; Farahany, S ; Jahangiri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The effect of temperature, pressure and bonding time on microstructure of temperature gradient transient liquid phase (TGTLP) diffusion bonded Al7075 alloy using liquid gallium interlayer was investigated. The selected bonding method relies on using the minimum amount of liquid gallium on faying surfaces, using a very fast heating rate to reach the joining temperature and imposing a temperature gradient across the bond region. The microstructure of the diffusion bonded joints was evaluated by light optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results show that by increasing the temperature, pressure and time of joining, a more uniform...

A novel and cost-effective method for fabrication of a durable superhydrophobic aluminum surface with self-cleaning properties

    , Article Nanotechnology ; Volume 31, Issue 46 , 2020 Afzali, N ; Taghvaei, E ; Moosavi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    IOP Publishing Ltd  2020
    Abstract
A hierarchical superhydrophobic surface is prepared via a two-step boiling water immersion process and anodization of the treated aluminum substrate in a novel hydrophobic electrolyte of aluminum nitrate and stearic acid mixture at room temperature. The immersion time in boiling water had a significant influence on the morphology and durability of the sample. A pseudoboehmite coating is created on the aluminum surface during the boiling process, as revealed by the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer results. The energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analysis confirmed the formation of hydrophobic coating surface after...

    Abstract
Joining of dissimilar light metals by friction stir welding (FSW) is of interest to reduce weight and fuel consumption in the transport sector. Such coupled metals may need protective surface treatments, e.g. against wear or corrosion, for some applications. In this work, the formation of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings in a silicate-based electrolyte for corrosion protection of FSW AZ31B magnesium alloy-titanium joints has been studied. The joints, if unprotected, may be susceptible to severe galvanic corrosion in chloride-containing environments. The coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Mg2SiO4 and...

Effects of ion-exchange and hydrolysis mechanisms on lead silicate glass corrosion

    , Article Corrosion ; Volume 68, Issue 9 , September , 2012 , Pages 793-800 ; 00109312 (ISSN) Ali Rahimi, R ; Sadrnezhaad, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Corrosion of lead silicate glass (LSG) contacting 0.5 M aqueous nitric acid (HNO 3) was investigated via scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma analysis, and weight-loss measurement to determine the respective contributions of the ion-exchange vs. the hydrolysis reactions. The LSG having X M ≡ Pb+K+Na/Si mole ratios of less than 0.7 showed very little weight loss with no Si network deterioration. At X M > 0.7, the mechanism changed into the hydrolysis, which caused the formation of a networkless gel layer resting at the solid/liquid interface. Addition of titania (TiO 2) and zirconia (ZrO 2) had disparate effects: X M < 0.7 improved corrosion...

    Abstract
Abstract: Bead-on-plate submerged arc welding was conducted on St37 steel by manufactured Cr, Mo, and Cr–Mo active basic fluxes produced via the unfused bonded method. The base metal heat-affected zone and weld metal (WM) microstructures were identified and characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, each element’s recovery rate (η) and slag factor (α) determine the amount of element transferred from flux into WM. Then, the ferrite morphologies volume fraction of WMs was measured. Moreover, the chemical analysis of slag and inclusions was evaluated by point scan energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and extensively discussed. The number density and...

    Abstract
This study is aimed at optimizing the rice husk ash (RHA) content and bacterial concentration in self-compacting concrete (SCC). For this purpose, cement was partially replaced with RHA at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% by weight of cement. In addition, micro-silica (MS) was added to all mixes at a dosage of 10% by weight of cementitious materials. The mix with the optimum RHA content was supplied with bacterial cells with concentrations of 103, 105, and 107 cells/ml to reduce the formation of micro-cracks. The RHA concretes showed reduced workability with increasing RHA content. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were performed on...
