, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Babanejad, Safoura (Author) ; Askari, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Some of the low-grade titanium resources which are located in the country are titanomagnetite placer deposits. In current study, beneficiation of titanium-bearing concentrate of a placer deposit containing 6.13wt.% TiO2 was investigated by acidic leaching in order to remove impurities. To beneficiate the concentrate, based on the optimum conditions obtained in previous studies, solid-state reduction, magnetic separation, and calcination of non-magnetic product were performed. Afterwards, by studying temperature, time, acid concentration and L:S ratio, the final product was leached under optimal conditions were as follows: H2SO4 concentration of 15wt.%, L:S ratio of 20:1 (mL:g), reaction...

An Atomistic Study of the Interacting Crack and Coated Inhomogeneity

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghassemi, Mohsen (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Classical continuum mechanics fails to give an accurate solution near the crack tip, moreover, it implies that a solid is able to sustain an infinite stress at the Griffith-Inglis crack tips. Among other critical issues is the inability of classical approach to sense the size effect. For these reasons, for more in-depth understanding and accurate behavioral predictions, it is essential to develop some atomistic methods which properly accounts, not only for the structure but also the long and short range atomic interactions effectively. In this work the interaction of coated inhomogeneity and crack under polynomial loading is simulated by using the many body Rafii-Tabar and Sutton potential...

Anderson Impurity Model in Dirac Matter

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mashkoori, Mahdi (Author) ; Jafari, Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we have been mainly interested in studying Single Impurity Anderson model (SIAM) in Dirac fermions. Although this model seems to be simple, the rich physics of SIAM can not be underestimated. In this thesis we were interested in Dirac materials, systems which their low energy excitations are described by Dirac equation. Therefore, considering Dirac material in two dimensions(2D), we briefly review the distinct features of one atom thick layer of carbon. In addition, we will explain the effective Hamiltonian of Bismuth near L point which is considered a three dimensional(3D) Dirac material. Because of very strong spin-orbit interaction, bismuth is a key element in topological...

Study Quantum Phases of Superconducting Kondo Lattice Model In s and p wave symmetry of Gap Function

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moghtader, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Kargarian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, first we study superconductivity and its mechanisms then classify different types of that based on symmetry of gap function. After that, we shall discuss metallic systems that have impurities in them and propose two successful model describing this phenomenon, Anderson’s model and Kondo’s model. In the next step, by introducing Kondo lattice model which is an ordered array of impurities in system, try to solve it by mean-field approximation and will be seen a phase transition in a characteristic temperature known as Kondo’s temperature. Then generalize these models to situation when background system is a superconductor and study it’s behavior and quantum phases. Although...

A new approach to optimize the operating conditions of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell based on degradation mechanisms

    , Article Energy Systems ; Volume 4, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 219-237 ; 18683967 (ISSN) Roshandel, R ; Parhizgar, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Performance degradation remains as one of the primary limitations for practical applications of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The performance of a PEM fuel cell stack is affected by many internal and external factors, such as fuel cell design and assembly, degradation of materials, operational conditions, and impurities or contaminants. Performance degradation is unavoidable, but the degradation rate can be minimized through a comprehensive understanding of degradation and failure mechanisms. In present work, a single PEM fuel cell for stationary applications is investigated. Membrane and catalyst layers (anode and cathode electrodes) are considered as critical components that...

    Abstract
Contaminant materials in lubricants are signs for prediction and measurement of wear in engines. Therefore oil monitoring is considered as one of the most effective techniques for maintaining the heavy equipments. However based on oil analysis data, the identification of engine problem is very hard due to different contribution factors. Hence, this paper is purposed to analyze the wear behavior of some sets of selected heavy equipment engine based on documented oil analysis data during two years in different conditions to track engine failures using trend analysis. Furthermore the selected equipments are divided into two major groups (plantation and forestry, and general construction) based...

    , Article EPJ Applied Physics ; Volume 55, Issue 3 , 2011 ; 12860042 (ISSN) Arghavani Nia, B ; Ghaderi, A ; Solaymani, S ; Oskoie, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Growth of thin layers of compound semiconductors such as GaAs and Al x Ga1-x As was obtained by Liquid Phase Epitaxy (LPE) at 838-828 ° C in thickness range of 0.1-4.3 μm which was estimated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). By Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) measurements, type of impurity atoms and their density and uniformity with respect to thickness were measured. In this way we are sure that variation of impurity atoms such as Si, Te, Sn and Ge indicates that epilayers were formed uniformly and it demonstrated that the LPE growth was a suitable way to obtain a good quality of epitaxy layers. Amount of composition parameter x in the compound semiconductor AlxGa1-xAs was...

    Abstract
A specific structure of doped graphene with substituted silicon impurity is introduced and ab initio density-functional approach is applied for the energy band structure calculation of the proposed structure. Using the band structure calculation for different silicon sites in the host graphene, the effect of silicon concentration and unit cell geometry on the bandgap of the proposed structure is also investigated. Chemically, silicon-doped graphene results in an energy gap as large as 2eV according to density-functional theory calculations. As the authors will show, in contrast to previous bandgap engineering methods, such structure has significant advantages including wide gap tuning...

Combined model of mass-transfer coefficients for clean and contaminated liquid-liquid systems

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 50, Issue 8 , 2011 , Pages 4608-4617 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Haghdoost, A ; Dehkordi, A. M ; Darbandi, M ; Shahalami, M ; Saien, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Mass-transfer rates to and from drops in liquid-liquid extraction processes are often reduced by the presence of contaminants. To design an industrial extractor, it is essential to consider this contamination effect in a quantitative manner. To achieve this goal, an experimental investigation was conducted on the mass transfer into single drops for n-butanol-succinic acid-water, as the recommended test system by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE). The effects of anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), cationic (dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, DTMAC), and nonionic (octylphenol decaethylene glycol ether, Triton X-100) surfactants on the hydrodynamic and mass-transfer...

Fast two-step microwave-activated synthesis of Mn doped ZnS nanocrystals: Comparison of the luminescence and doping process with thermochemical approach

    , Article Journal of Luminescence ; Volume 131, Issue 4 , April , 2011 , Pages 721-726 ; 00222313 (ISSN) Marandi, M ; Hajisalem, G ; Taghavinia, N ; Houshiar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this work we report a fast two-step microwave activated synthesis of the ZnS:Mn nanocrystals. Zn(NO3)2 and Na2S 2O3 were used as the precursors and Mn(NO 3)2 was employed as the source of the impurity. The aqueous synthesis was based on the heat sensitivity of Na2S 2O3, which releases some S species on heating. Consequently, the reaction was well activated under microwave irradiation resulting in formation of ZnS:Mn nanocrystals. Thioglycerol (TG) was also used as the capping agent and the catalyst of the reaction. The synthesis process was done in two steps, i.e. 1 min irradiation without TG and then injection of TG and continuation of irradiation. ZnS:Mn nanocrystals were quickly formed...

Numerical model for estimation of corrosion location in nuclear power plant steam generators

    , Article Nuclear Engineering and Design ; Volume 241, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 95-100 ; 00295493 (ISSN) Tashakor, S ; Jahanfarnia, G ; Kebriaee, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Deposition of dissolved impurities and corrosion in steam generators is a significant problem in the operation of nuclear power plants. Impurities and corrosion products usually accumulate in the secondary sides of steam generators (SG) and form deposits on the SG surfaces. A high level of impurity concentration close to the SG heating surface causes the corrosion process to occur with more intensity. The aim of this study is to estimate the most probable locations of impurity concentration and deposition in a SG. Equations representing the convection and diffusion in the liquid phase close to the heated surface (the viscous sub layer) are derived. Based on the mass balance of impurities in...

Stable local moments of vacancies, substitutional and hollow site impurities in graphene

    , Article Journal of Physics Condensed Matter ; Volume 27, Issue 15 , 2015 ; 09538984 (ISSN) Mashkoori, M ; Jafari, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Institute of Physics Publishing  2015
    Abstract
The two-sublattice nature of graphene lattice in conjunction with three-fold rotational symmetry, allows for the p-wave hybridization of the impurity state with the Bloch states of carbon atoms. Such an opportunity is not available in normal metals where the wave function is scalar. The p-wave hybridization function V (-k) appears when dealing with vacancies, substitutional adatoms and the hollow site impurities while the s-wave mixing on graphene lattice pertains only to the top site impurities. In this work, we compare the local moment formation in these two cases and find that the local moments formed by p-wave mixing compared to the s-wave one are robust against the changes in the...

Local moment formation in Dirac electrons

    Abstract
Elemental bismuth and its compounds host strong spin-orbit interaction which is at the heart of topologically non-trivial alloys based on bismuth. These class of materials are described in terms of 4x4 matrices at each v point where spin and orbital labels of the underlying electrons are mixed. In this work we investigate the single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) within a mean field approximation to address the nature of local magnetic moment formation in a generic Dirac Hamiltonian. Despite the spin-mixing in the Hamiltonian, within the Hartree approximation it turns out that the impuritys Green function is diagonal in spin label. In the three dimensional Dirac materials defined over a...

    Abstract
Discovery of superconductivity in the impurity band formed by heavy doping of boron into diamond (C:B) as well as doping of boron into silicon (Si:B) has provided a rout for the possibility of new families of superconducting materials. Motivated by the special role played by copper atoms in high temperature superconducting materials where essentially Cu d orbitals are responsible for a variety of correlation induced phases, in this paper we investigate the effect of substitutional doping of Cu into diamond. Our extensive first principle calculations based on density functional theory which are averaged over various geometries indicate the formation of a mid-gap band, which mainly arises from...

    Abstract
Accurate determination of natural gas viscosity is important for successful design of production, transportation, and gas storage systems. However, most of available models/correlations suffer from complexity, robustness, and inadequate accuracy especially when wide range of pressure and temperature is applied. Present study illustrates development of two novel models for predicting natural gas viscosity for pure natural gas (CH4) as well as natural gas containing impurities. For this purpose, 6484 data points have been gathered and analyzed from the open literature covering wide range of pressure, temperature, and specific gravity levels, temperature ranges from -262.39 to 620.33 °F (109.6...

    Abstract
Chromatographic method development for preparative targets is a time-consuming and subjective process. This can be particularly problematic because of the use of valuable samples for isolation and the large consumption of solvents in preparative scale. These processes could be improved by using statistical computations to save time, solvent and experimental efforts. Thus, contributed by ESI-MS, after applying DryLab software to gain an overview of the most effective parameters in separation of synthesized celecoxib and its co-eluted compounds, design of experiment software that relies on multivariate modeling as a chemometric approach was used to predict the optimized touching-band...

    Abstract
We have developed a methodology to simulate circuit aging including the device fabrication variation with less simulation effort. As an example a 6T SRAM cell has been investigated. It is demonstrated that the variability range of the circuit performance is further enhanced due to the long-term device aging. Among the device parameters, the impurity concentration variation plays a particularly important role for the circuit performance variation. However, most sensitive for the aging degradation is the channel-length variation, because it increases the aging effect drastically. Further, the individual aging of each MOSFET is strongly dependent on the actual stress during circuit operation. ©...

As, Sb, and Fe removal from industrial copper electrolyte by solvent displacement crystallisation technique

    Abstract
The presence of impurities in the copper electrolyte increases the energy consumption of an electrorefining process and contaminates the deposited copper on cathode. The concentration of impurities increases over time making it necessary to remove them from the solution. This research introduces a fast, effective, and simple method to refine the industrial electrolyte from arsenic, iron and antimony by solvent displacement crystallisation technique. In this method, when alcohol is added to the electrolyte, the impurities precipitate from the solution as amorphous arsenato antimonite phase. Results show that Fe, Sb, and As are removed from the copper electrolyte by 75.2, 96.9 and 99.8%,...
