    , Article Control Theory and Technology ; Volume 20, Issue 3 , 2022 , Pages 338-348 ; 20956983 (ISSN) Jalili Rahmtati, A ; Xu, G ; Effati, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the stabilization of an Euler-Bernoulli beam with time delays in the boundary controller. The boundary velocity feedback law is applied to obtain the closed-loop system. It is shown that this system generates a C-semigroup of linear operators. Moreover, the stability of the closed-loop system is discussed for different values of the controller constants and time delays via using spectral analysis and a suitable Lyapunov function. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to South China University of Technology and Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Multiscale modeling of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical analysis of heterogeneous porous media

    , Article Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering ; Volume 391 , 2022 ; 00457825 (ISSN) Saeedmonir, S ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
This paper presents a numerical multiscale formulation for analysis of the transient heat and fluid flow in deformable heterogeneous porous media. Due to the heterogeneity of the media, the direct numerical simulation of the micro-structures leads to high computational costs. Hence, the multi-scale method can provide an efficient computational procedure. To this end, the first-order computational homogenization is adopted for two-scale simulation of THM problems. The governing equations of the problem contain a stress equilibrium equation, a mass continuity equation and an advection–diffusion equation in a fully coupled manner. Accordingly, the proper virtual power relations are defined as a...

A non-linear mapping representing human action recognition under missing modality problem in video data

    , Article Measurement: Journal of the International Measurement Confederation ; Volume 186 , 2021 ; 02632241 (ISSN) Gharahdaghi, A ; Razzazi, F ; Amini, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
Human action recognition by using standard video files is a well-studied problem in the literature. In this study, we assume to have access to single modality standard data of some actions (training data). Based on this data, we aim at identifying the actions that are present in a target modality video data without any explicit source–target relationship information. In this case, the training and test phases of the recognition task are based on different imaging modalities. Our goal in this paper is to introduce a mapping (a nonlinear operator) on both modalities such that the outcome shares some common features. These common features were then used to recognize the actions in each domain....

    Abstract
Barcoding photons, atoms, and any quantum states can provide a host of functionalities that could benefit future quantum communication systems and networks beyond today's imagination. As a significant application of barcoding photons, we introduce code division multiple-access (CDMA) communication systems for various applications. In this context, we introduce and discuss the fundamental principles of a novel quantum CDMA (QCDMA) technique based on spectrally encoding and decoding of continuous-mode quantum light pulses. In particular, we present the mathematical models of various QCDMA modules that are fundamental in describing an ideal and typical QCDMA system, such as quantum signal...

Temporal analog optical computing using an on-chip fully reconfigurable photonic signal processor

    , Article Optics and Laser Technology ; Volume 111 , 2019 , Pages 66-74 ; 00303992 (ISSN) Babashah, H ; Kavehvash, Z ; Khavasi, A ; Koohi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper introduces the concept of on-chip temporal optical computing, based on dispersive Fourier transform and suitably designed modulation module, to perform mathematical operations of interest, such as differentiation, integration, or convolution in time domain. The desired mathematical operation is performed as signal propagates through a fully reconfigurable on-chip photonic signal processor. Although a few numbers of photonic temporal signal processors have been introduced recently, they are usually bulky or they suffer from limited reconfigurability which is of great importance to implement large-scale general-purpose photonic signal processors. To address these limitations, this...

    Abstract
Traditional analog computers that perform mathematical operations electronically or mechanically suffer from their relatively large size and slow response. Recently, the idea of spatial analog optical computing has overcome these restrictions. The different techniques to implement spatial analog optical computation can be categorized into two fundamental approaches: (I) metasurface (MS) approach and (II) Green's function (GF) approach. In the first approach, a metasurface is designed to implement the Green's function of the desired operator in the spatial domain. This means that this approach needs two sub-blocks to perform Fourier and inverse Fourier transform. On the other hand, in the...

A universal formula for generalized cardinal B-splines

    , Article Applied and Computational Harmonic Analysis ; Volume 45, Issue 2 , 2018 , Pages 341-358 ; 10635203 (ISSN) Amini, A ; Madani, R ; Unser, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Academic Press Inc  2018
    Abstract
We introduce a universal and systematic way of defining a generalized B-spline based on a linear shift-invariant (LSI) operator L (a.k.a. Fourier multiplier). The generic form of the B-spline is βL=LdL−1δ where L−1δ is the Green's function of L and where Ld is the discretized version of the operator that has the smallest-possible null space. The cornerstone of our approach is a main construction of Ld in the form of an infinite product that is motivated by Weierstrass’ factorization of entire functions. We show that the resulting Fourier-domain expression is compatible with the construction of all known B-splines. In the special case where L is the derivative operator (linked with...

On buckling and post-buckling behavior of functionally graded micro-beams in thermal environment

    , Article International Journal of Engineering Science ; Volume 128 , July , 2018 , Pages 63-78 ; 00207225 (ISSN) Taati, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
This study provides an exact solution for the size dependent buckling and post-buckling behavior of functionally graded (FG) micro-beams with arbitrary boundary conditions which are subjected to combined thermo-mechanical loading. To this end, a theoretical formulation including the effects of size dependency, elastic foundation and uniform temperature distribution is first derived using the modified couple stress theory and through the principle of minimum total potential energy. Next, the nonlinear equations governing bending and stretching behavior of FG micro-beams are uncoupled to a fourth-order ordinary differential equation. Finally, the differential operator method is utilized to...

On the limitations of linear power reactor noise analysis: A point kinetics approach

    , Article Annals of Nuclear Energy ; Volume 102 , 2017 , Pages 124-133 ; 03064549 (ISSN) Ayyoubzadeh, S. M ; Vosoughi, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A novel method is introduced which allows the higher order perturbative solution of a linear operator with a time variant coefficient. This method employs a form of raising and lowering operators which generate higher and lower order harmonics from a given harmonic. The analysis has been applied to the point kinetics equations with a monotone oscillatory reactivity to place bounds on the relative error of the linearization method frequently employed in the power reactor noise techniques. As a result, the maximum permissible reactivity amplitude for a given reactor as a function of frequency has been obtained such that regular power reactor noise methods remain accurate enough. Three...

Dielectric metasurfaces solve differential and integro-differential equations

    Abstract
Leveraging subwavelength resonant nanostructures, plasmonic metasurfaces have recently attracted much attention as a breakthrough concept for engineering optical waves both spatially and spectrally. However, inherent ohmic losses concomitant with low coupling efficiencies pose fundamental impediments over their practical applications. Not only can all-dielectric metasurfaces tackle such substantial drawbacks, but also their CMOS-compatible configurations support both Mie resonances that are invariant to the incident angle. Here, we report on a transmittive metasurface comprising arrayed silicon nanodisks embedded in a homogeneous dielectric medium to manipulate phase and amplitude of...

    Analog computing using graphene-based metalines

    , Article Optics Letters ; Volume 40, Issue 22 , 2015 , Pages 5239-5242 ; 01469592 (ISSN) AbdollahRamezani, S ; Arik, K ; Khavasi, A ; Kavehvash, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We introduce the new concept of "metalines" for manipulating the amplitude and phase profile of an incident wave locally and independently. Thanks to the highly confined graphene plasmons, a transmit-array of graphene-based metalines is used to realize analog computing on an ultracompact, integrable, and planar platform. By employing the general concepts of spatial Fourier transformation, a well-designed structure of such meta-transmit-array, combined with graded index (GRIN) lenses, can perform two mathematical operations, i.e., differentiation and integration, with high efficiency. The presented configuration is about 60 times shorter than the recent structure proposed by Silva et al....

Implementing a high-order accurate implicit operator scheme for solving steady incompressible viscous flows using artificial compressibility method

    , Article International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids ; Volume 66, Issue 8 , July , 2011 , Pages 939-962 ; 02712091 (ISSN) Hejranfar, K ; Khajeh Saeed, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper uses a fourth-order compact finite-difference scheme for solving steady incompressible flows. The high-order compact method applied is an alternating direction implicit operator scheme, which has been used by Ekaterinaris for computing two-dimensional compressible flows. Herein, this numerical scheme is efficiently implemented to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the primitive variables formulation using the artificial compressibility method. For space discretizing the convective fluxes, fourth-order centered spatial accuracy of the implicit operators is efficiently obtained by performing compact space differentiation in which the method uses block-tridiagonal...

Cavity quantum electrodynamics in the ultrastrong coupling regime

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 3 F , June , 2011 , Pages 820-826 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Ahmadi, E ; Chalabi, H. R ; Arab, A ; Khorasani, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We revisit the mathematical formulation of the famous Jaynes-Cummings-Paul Hamiltonian, which describes the interaction of a two-level atom with a single mode of an electromagnetic cavity reservoir. We rigorously show that under the condition of ultrastrong coupling between the atom and cavity in which the transition frequency is comparable to the coupling frequency, the bosonic field operators undergo non-sinusoidal time variations. As a result, the well-known solutions to the Jaynes-Cummings-Paul model are no longer valid, even when the rotating wave approximation is not used. We show how a correct mathematical solution could be found instead

A unified approach to the mathematical analysis of generalized RKPM, gradient RKPM, and GMLS

    , Article Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering ; Volume 200, Issue 5-8 , January , 2011 , Pages 540-576 ; 00457825 (ISSN) Behzadan, A ; Shodja, H. M ; Khezri, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
It is well-known that the conventional reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) is unfavorable when dealing with the derivative type essential boundary conditions [1-3]. To remedy this issue a group of meshless methods in which the derivatives of a function can be incorporated in the formulation of the corresponding interpolation operator will be discussed. Formulation of generalized moving least squares (GMLS) on a domain and GMLS on a finite set of points will be presented. The generalized RKPM will be introduced as the discretized form of GMLS on a domain. Another method that helps to deal with derivative type essential boundary conditions is the gradient RKPM which incorporates the...

    Abstract
A high-order accurate implicit operator scheme is used to solve steady incompressible slip flow and heat transfer in 2D microchannels. The present methodology considers the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations using the artificial compressibility method with employing the Maxwell and Smoluchowski boundary conditions to model the slip flow and temperature jump on the walls in microchannels. Since the slip and temperature jump boundary conditions contain the derivatives of the velocity and temperature profiles, using the compact method the boundary conditions can be easily and accurately implemented. The computations are performed for a 2D microchannel and a 2D backward facing step in the...

    Abstract
With the significant role that warehouse plays in connection to suppliers, distributors, and clients, and considering the costliness of storage systems, efforts have focused on the reduction of procedural expenses. Among the most significant expenses, one involves the distance traveled by operators or S/R machinery for the selection of ordered items; the common solution to which has been through the classification of stored items. Previous articles have focused on linear solutions to the abovementioned problem, such as P-Median. This article shall focus on the problems arising from the said solution, and instead a non-linear method proposed. Further, a heuristic algorithm is produced for the...

Resource-constrained project scheduling problem with flexible work profiles: A genetic algorithm approach

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 1 E , JANUARY-JUNE , 2010 , Pages 25-35 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Ranjbar, M ; Kianfar, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper deals with the resource-constrained project scheduling problem with flexible work profiles. In this problem, a project contains activities interrelated by finish-start-type precedence constraints with a time lag of zero. In many real-life projects, however, it often occurs that only one renewable bottleneck resource is available and that activities do not have, a fixed prespecified duration and associated resource requirement, but a total work content, which essentially indicates how much work has to be performed on them. Based on this work content, all feasible work profiles have to be specified for the activities, each characterized by a, fixed duration and a resource...

Symbiotic evolutionary algorithm, a remedy for linkage problem

    Abstract
Recombination in Genetic Algorithms (GA) is supposed to extract the component characteristics from two parents and reassemble them in different combinations, hopefully producing an offspring that has the good characteristics of both parents, and this requires explicit chromosome and recombination, operator by design. This paper presents a novel evolutionary approach based on symbiogenesis which uses symbiotic combination instead of sexual recombination, and by using this operator, it requires no domain knowledge for chromosome or combination operator design. The algorithm is benchmarked on three problem sets: combinatorial optimization category, deceptive problems, and fully deceptive...
