, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Barakchian, Masoud (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor) ; Seyed Reihani, Morteza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, due to greater attention scientific communities to environment and environmental friendly material, use of natural fibers as reinforcing the polymers has increased significantly. High specific strength, low density, cheap, stiffness and recycled by nature, are including promotional items using natural fibers as reinforcing in the polymer composites. In This study has tried in the first place an appropriate method for producing polypropylene composites reinforced with short jute fibers should be presented and then the physical and mechanical properties of composites will be investigated. Used MAPP and Silane for compatibility took improved between natural jute fibers as a...

Study on Effects of Short Wood Fibers on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Biodegradable Composite Based on Thermoplastic Starch

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pesaran Haji Abbas, Ehsan (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor) ; Sayyed Reihani, Morteza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to the negative effects of conventional plastics on the enviroment, especially in the packaging sector, extensive efforts have been put to replace these polymers with biodegradable polymers. Starch is one of the biodegradable polymers which has attracted a lot of attentions because of low cost and good processability. Native starch has the form of granule and can be processed to a continuous phase after gelatinization in the presence of a plasticizer. The resulting material is a biodegradable plastic-like material called thermoplastic starch (TPS) which is processed using conventional technologies, but suffers from low mechanical properties and high hydrophilicity. Addition of natural...

Manufacturing and Mechanical Characterization of Polymeric Composites Reinforced with Natural Fibers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abolhassani, Shahrooz (Author) ; Rajabzade, Fallah (Supervisor) ; Akbari (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With increasing awareness, artificial materials have been replaced by recyclable materials and green materials. In the manufacture of composites, natural and degradable materials are also used. The main object of this research is the fabrication of natural fiber reinforced composites. In this research, fibers are used that are cultivated in the country. Also, the effect of fiber length, fiber mass percentage and fiber correction on composite properties was investigated. The fiber length factor is at two levels of 5 mm and 9 mm, the percentage of fiber mass is in four levels of 5%, 10%, 12.5% and 15%, and the factor for correction of fibers is also in two groups of modified fibers and...

Manufacturing and Mechanical Properties and Microstructure Optimization of the Ternary Polypropylene-based Composite Reinforced by Short Flax Fibers and Toughened by Poe Rubber Particles

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bahrami, Reza (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor) ; Seyed Reyhani, Morteza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently, Polypropylene has been extensively used in a variety of applications in the polymer industry, but its quite low stiffness and toughness limit this polyolefin’s application in the engineering functions; thus, the market of polymer blend and composite manufacturing has grown noticeably in the last few years. In the current project, short Flax fibers are used in order to reinforce the PP matrix. Firstly, Flax fibers were washed with the gentle and harsh condition during the alkalization process, then the optimized alkalization condition was determined through comparison of results from X-ray Diffraction (XRD ), Attenuated Total Reflectance FTIR (ATR-FTIR) and microscopic surface...

TiO2 Nanophotocatalyst: Preparation via Sol-Gel Method and Deposition on Natural Fiber

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haghighat, Shima (Author) ; Sadrnezhad, Khatiboleslam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
TiO2 is one of the most frequently used photocatalyst materials. Porous TiO2 nanostructure has drawn much attention recently due to high decomposition rate of organic pollutants. In this thesis, TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized via sol-gel method and were coated on cotton and jute fiber separately; besides, the impregnated fibers were heat treated to eliminate cellulose. Titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) was used as a precursor and two solutions, acidic and alcoholic, were used as the primary solutions for synthesis. In acidic solution, the crystalline phase and size distribution of TiO2 nanoparticles were evaluated with changing pH.Then, the appropriate pH was chosen for coating. In...

Fabrication and Investigation of Structure and Mechanical Properties of Bagasse Fibers Reinforced PP: Role of Alkalization and Calcium Carbonate Filler

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asgharpour, Ali (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The consumption of plastics in the world is increasing and this is accompanied by the challenges of production from oil products and carbon footprint, waste production and environmental issues. The solutions to these challenges are material recycling and the production of biocompatible plastics. Polypropylene is a widely used polymer that is commonly used in conjunction with reinforcements such as fiberglass. Natural fibers can be substituted to increase the biocompatibility of the composite, which, despite its many advantages, presents challenges. The most important challenge is the poor adhesion of the fibers and the matrix due to the hydrophilicity of natural fibers and hydrophobicity of...

Experimental investigation of mechanical behavior and microstructural analysis of bagasse fiber-reinforced polypropylene (BFRP) composites to control lost circulation in water-based drilling mud

    Abstract
During the drilling operation in high-permeability, natural and artificial fractured formations, the lost circulation of drilling mud is a common problem. Various methods have been applied to control lost circulation and among these methods, using Lost Circulation Materials (LCM) is the most common method that blocks the fluid loss channels in the formation by creating structures. In this project, the aim is to develop and use natural fiber-reinforced composites as LCM can be an innovative and technical solution. Natural fiber-reinforced composites have excellent properties such as high specific strength, non-abrasive, eco-friendly, and biodegradability. It seems to be possible that...

    Abstract
Natural and biodegradable polymers are of particular interest as green sources with low-cost and environmentally friendly features, and have been widely used for polymer composite development. The term “Green Composites” refers to polymer/filler systems in which polymer, filler, or sometimes both components are green in view of sources from which they are yielded or their biodegradability. Natural fibers obtained from plants, animals, and/or geological processes are a big class of green sources widely applied in green composite development. There has also been continued research on recycling of green composite as well as developing hybrid systems for advanced applications. In view of their...
