    Abstract
We have applied Rosenbrock's optimization algorithm to obtain the optimized efficiency of a solar cell and its structural parameters. To obtain these parameters, we have developed a computer program for simultaneous optimization and simulation of the solar cell. We have used experimental data on the electrical and optical properties of a-Si1-xCx layers, put them into the written code and obtained the optimized parameters of this solar cell. The maximum efficiency is 6.32% which is close to one experimental result. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

On-line fault detection and isolation (FDI) for the exhaust path of a turbocharged SI engine

    , Article ASME 2013 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference, DSCC 2013 ; Vol. 1 , 2013 ; ISBN: 9780791856123 Salehi, R ; Shahbakhti M ; Alasty, A ; Vossoughi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Detection and isolation of faults in the exhaust gas path of a turbocharged spark ignition (SI) engine is an essential part of the engine control unit (ECU) strategies to minimize exhaust emission and ensure safe operation of a turbocharger. This paper proposes a novel physics-based strategy to detect and isolate an exhaust manifold leakage and a closed-stuck wastegate fault. The strategy is based on a globally optimal parameter estimation algorithm which detects an effective hole area in the exhaust manifold. The estimation algorithm requires prediction of the exhaust manifold's input and output flows. The input flow is predicted by a nonlinear Luenberger observer which is analytically...

    Abstract
Primal-dual interior-point methods (IPMs) have shown their power in solving large classes of optimization problems. However, there is still a discrepancy between the practical behavior of these algorithms and their theoretical worst-case complexity results with respect to the update strategies of the duality gap parameter in the algorithm. Recently, this discrepancy was significantly reduced by Peng, J., Roos, C. and Terlaky, T., 2002, Self-Regularity: A New Paradigm for Primal-Dual Interior-Point Algorithms (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press) who introduced a new family of self-regular (SR)-proximity functions based IPMs. In this paper, based on a class of SR proximities, we propose...

    Abstract
The design of a copper chloride laser is described, and the laser is optimised by studying the dependence of its output power on the buffer gas type. The voltage and current of the laser discharge at the optimum buffer gas pressure are measured. The influence of the diaphragm diameter on the specific output power is studied after optimisation of switch parameters. When an diaphragm producing the optimal temperature gradient in the laser gas-discharge tube, the record specific output power of 123 W L-1 is obtained without any admixtures. ©2007 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd

An efficient parameter selection criterion for image denoising

    , Article 5th IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology, Athens, 18 December 2005 through 21 December 2005 ; Volume 2005 , 2005 , Pages 872-877 Pirsiavash, H ; Kasaei, S ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The performance of most image denoising systems depends on some parameters which should be set carefully based on noise distribution and its variance. As in some applications noise characteristics are unknown, in this research, a criterion which its minimization leads to the best parameter set up is introduced. The proposed criterion is evaluated for the wavelet shrinkage image denoising algorithm using the cross validation procedure. The criterion is tested for some different values of thresholds, and the output leading to the minimum criterion value is selected as the final denoised output. The resulting outputs of our method and the previous threshold selection scheme for the wavelet...

    , Article Expert Systems with Applications ; Volume 38, Issue 9 , September , 2011 , Pages 11708-11714 ; 09574174 (ISSN) Pasandideh, S. H. R ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Tokhmehchi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper deals with a two-echelon inventory system for a non-repairable item where the system consists of one warehouse and m identical retailers and uses continuous-review (R, Q) ordering policy. To find an effective stocking policy for this system, a mathematical model with the objective of minimizing the total annual inventory investment subject to constraints on the average annual order frequency, expected number of backorders, and budget is formulated. The mathematical model of the problem at hand is shown to be nonlinear integer-programming and hence a parameter-tuned genetic algorithm is proposed to solve it efficiently. A numerical example is provided at the end to illustrate the...

Convex Optimization and MIMO RADAR waveform design in the presence of clutter

    , Article 2008 2nd International Conference on Signals, Circuits and Systems, SCS 2008, Nabeul, 7 November 2008 through 9 November 2008 ; January , 2008 ; 9781424426287 (ISBN) Naghibi, T ; Behnia, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Waveform design for Target identification and classification in MIMO radar systems has been studied in several recent works. While the previous works considered signal independent noise and found optimal signals for an e stimation algorithm, here we extend the results to the case where clutter is also present and then we will find the optimum waveform for several estimators differing in the assumptions on the given statistics. Several different approaches to the optimal waveform design are proposed, including minimizing the error of MMSE estimator, minimizing the maximum error of the covariance shaping least square (CSLS) estimator and minimizing the MSE error of scaled least square (SLS)...

    Abstract
Atomic force microscopes (AFM) are widely used for feature detection and scanning surface topography of different materials. Contrast of topography images is significantly influenced by the sensitivity of AFM micro cantilever which means enhancement of sensitivity leads to increase of topography images resolution So, in the last years numerous scientists interested in studying the effects of different parameters such as geometric one on the sensitivity of AFM micro cantilevers. V-shape micro cantilever types of AFMs probe are widely used to scan various types of surfaces. In V-shape micro cantilevers, there are many geometric and design parameters which influence the flexural sensitivity of...

Optimal stability of a redundant mobile manipulator via genetic algorithm

    , Article Robotica ; Volume 24, Issue 6 , 2006 , Pages 739-743 ; 02635747 (ISSN) Meghdari, A ; Naderi, D ; Eslami, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Once the path of the vehicle and the desired task of the end-effector are predefined, in order to apply the optimal stability criterion, the manipulator should be redundant. In this paper, the goal is to find the position, angular velocity, and angular acceleration of the redundant link of the manipulator such that the entire system becomes optimally stable. By considering the full dynamic interaction between the manipulator and its vehicle, the stability issue becomes more complex. There are some measures of stability and one of them is the tire's upward force. This measure tries to equalize the upward forces of the tires that lead to optimal stability and better steer-ability. Optimizing...

    Abstract
This article presents an overview of the mechanical design and fabrication of a Rescue Robot (CEDRA) for operation in unstructured environments. In order to obtain an appropriate mechanism for climbing the stairs, a novel method has been developed. In this kinematics-based approach we don't need to perform any dynamic analysis which is highly complicated and time consuming for most rovers. According to the essential characteristics needed for rovers, two objective functions were defined. We have shown that the new mechanism performs better on rough terrains than the previous well-known mechanism widely used in the Mars rovers. Moreover the design parameters are optimized by means of Genetic...

    Abstract
A novel bi-objective three-echelon supply chain problem is formulated in this paper in which cross-dock facilities to transport the products are modeled as an M/M/m queuing system. The proposed model is validated using the epsilon constraint method when applied to solve some small-size problems. Since the problem belongs to the class of NP-hard and that it is of a bi-objective type, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm with a new solution structure that satisfies all of the constraints is developed to find Pareto solutions. As there is no benchmark available in literature, three other multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithms called non-dominated ranking genetic...

    Abstract
In this paper a novel form of the familiar E-shaped patch antenna is presented. In the presented approach, by using the genetic algorithm (GA) based on fuzzy decision-making, some modifications have been implemented to the incorporated slots which lead to even more enhancement in the antenna bandwidth. The MOM (Method of Moment) is employed for analysis at the frequency band of 1.8GHz-2.6GHz by the optimization parameters of supply locations and slot dimensions. In the implemented fuzzy system, inputs are parameters like population, and outputs are parameters like recombination to produce the next generation. Fuzzy inference system (FIS) is used for the control of GA parameters. The design...

    Abstract
Application of Fractional Order PID (FOPID) controller to an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is presented and studied in this paper. An FOPID is a PID whose derivative and integral orders are fractional numbers rather than integers. Design stage of such a controller consists of determining five parameters. This paper employs Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to carry out the aforementioned design procedure. A novel cost function is defined to facilitate the control strategy over both the time-domain and the frequencydomain specifications. Comparisons are made with a PID controller from standpoints of transient response, robustness and disturbance rejection characteristics. It is...

    Abstract
In a motor-drive system, there are many factors which can be considered as a figure of merit in drive control algorithm. All of these factors should be evaluated simultaneously to achieve the reliable performance of drive. In this paper, an optimization problem is constructed on a direct torque controlled induction motor drive using a candidate from different parts of drive system: inverter loss from section of solid state converter, motor loss from section of electromechanical converter and torque ripple from mechanical section. Minimization of this cost function leads to the optimum values of drive control parameters. © 2008 IEEE

    Abstract
In spite of numerous attempts which have been made during the last decade to optimize pulse tube refrigerators, still theoretical and analytical realization of this device needs to be thoroughly explained. In this paper, in addition to the oscillatory flow analysis in the pulse tube refrigerator through a simple analytical model, the performance of the alternate tube section of this device is analyzed using a generalized efficiency, based on the entropy generation rate. In this model, in order to extract the entropy generation rate and the dissipative terms caused by fluid friction and heat flow in alternate tube, simplified momentum and energy equations are solved analytically and velocity...

New solutions of LR fuzzy linear systems using ranking functions and ABS algorithms

    Abstract
We propose an approach for computing the general compromised solution of an LR fuzzy linear system by use of a ranking function when the coefficient matrix is a crisp m×n matrix. The solution is so that mean values of a compromised solution satisfies the corresponding crisp linear system. We show that if the corresponding crisp system is incompatible, then the fuzzy linear system lacks any solution. Otherwise, we solve a constrained least squares problem to compute a compromised solution. If the optimal value of the constrained least squares problem is zero, then we obtain the LR solution, namely the exact solution, of the system with respect to a ranking function. On the other hand, if the...

Efficient stochastic algorithms for document clustering

    , Article Information Sciences ; Volume 220 , 2013 , Pages 269-291 ; 00200255 (ISSN) Forsati, R ; Mahdavi, M ; Shamsfard, M ; Meybodi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Clustering has become an increasingly important and highly complicated research area for targeting useful and relevant information in modern application domains such as the World Wide Web. Recent studies have shown that the most commonly used partitioning-based clustering algorithm, the K-means algorithm, is more suitable for large datasets. However, the K-means algorithm may generate a local optimal clustering. In this paper, we present novel document clustering algorithms based on the Harmony Search (HS) optimization method. By modeling clustering as an optimization problem, we first propose a pure HS based clustering algorithm that finds near-optimal clusters within a reasonable time....
