    Abstract
This article presents the theory and implementation of a quadrature and differential RF front-end receiver. Combining balun, low-noise amplifier (LNA), mixer, and oscillator in a single stage, the proposed circuit, named the Blixator, is well suited for low-power applications. The baseband's transimpedance amplifier (TIA) also shares part of its dc current with the Blixator cell, resulting in sub-milliwatt power consumption. To avoid additional power and area by quadrature LO generation, the I/Q signals are generated at RF, employing the inductors already required for providing the dc current path of the LNA transistors. The expressions for gain, noise figure (NF), and phase noise of the...

    Abstract
Over the past few decades, gold nanomaterials have shown great promise in the field of nanotechnology, especially in medical and biological applications. They have become the most used nanomaterials in those fields due to their several advantageous. However, rod-shaped gold nanoparticles, or gold nanorods (GNRs), have some more unique physical, optical, and chemical properties, making them proper candidates for biomedical applications including drug/gene delivery, photothermal/photodynamic therapy, and theranostics. Most of their therapeutic applications are based on their ability for tunable heat generation upon exposure to near-infrared (NIR) radiation, which is helpful in both...

Analytical and numerical biaxial bending analysis of deepwater riser due to vortex-induced vibration

    , Article Journal of Marine Science and Technology (Japan) ; Volume 27, Issue 1 , 2022 , Pages 492-507 ; 09484280 (ISSN) Tabeshpour, M. R ; Komachi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Japan  2022
    Abstract
Previous studies of analysis and prediction of marine risers responses usually focus on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of cross-flow (CF) direction rather than in-line (IL). Recent studies show that responses of IL direction tend to dominate in some cases. Responses of long riser due to biaxial bending of IL and CF VIV are investigated. Closed-form formulas are derived for estimating maximum normal stress due to the biaxial moment of CF/IL VIV and relations for estimating biaxial stress using CF values are presented. Analytical results are compared with numerical results of the time domain model and a good correlation is observed. It is shown that for tension and bending-controlled modes of...

    Abstract
An experimental setup has been developed to analyse the impact of cylinder transverse vibration caused by flow-induced vibration, and to improve wind energy harvesting from these vibrations. The setup consists of a cylinder mounted on four springs and is subjected to a uniform and steady flow of wind. In the first part, the effect of mounting a fixed cylinder as an obstacle with different diameters and distances from the downstream vibrating cylinder is investigated. It has been observed that the vibration amplitude on the wake of an unequal-sized obstacle is greatly amplified compared to the case of a single cylinder or an equal-sized cylinder. Numerical simulations has been conducted to...

Non-invasive auditory brain stimulation for gamma-band entrainment in dementia patients: An EEG dataset

    Elsevier Inc  2022
    Abstract
Gamma entrainment has been shown to enhance beta amyloid (Aβ) uptake in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) as well as improve cognitive symptoms of dementia in both humans and mice. Similar improvements have been reported for both invasive and non-invasive brain stimulation in the gamma oscillatory band, with 40 Hz auditory and visual sensory stimulants employed in non-invasive approaches. Non-invasive stimulation techniques possess the clear advantage of not requiring surgical procedures and can hence be applicable to a wider set of patients. The dataset introduced here was acquired with the aim of examining the network-level mechanisms governing the production of the brain's...

    Abstract
Slow-gamma (35-45 Hz) phase synchronization and the coupling between slow-gamma and low-frequency theta oscillations (4–8 Hz) are closely related to memory retrieval and cognitive functions. In this pilot study, we assess the Phase Amplitude Coupling (PAC) between theta and slow-gamma oscillatory bands and the quality of synchronization in slow-gamma oscillations using Phase Locking Value (PLV) on EEG data from healthy individuals and patients diagnosed with amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) during an oddball olfactory task. Our study indicates noticeable differences between the PLV and PAC values corresponding to olfactory stimulation in the three groups...

    Equatorial magnetoplasma waves

    Abstract
Due to its rotation, Earth traps a few equatorial ocean and atmospheric waves, including Kelvin, Yanai, Rossby, and Poincaré modes. It has been recently demonstrated that the mathematical origin of equatorial waves is intricately related to the nontrivial topology of hydrodynamic equations describing oceans or the atmosphere. In the present work, we consider plasma oscillations supported by a two-dimensional electron gas confined at the surface of a sphere or a cylinder. We argue that in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, these systems host a set of equatorial magnetoplasma waves that are counterparts to the equatorial waves trapped by Earth. For a spherical geometry, the equatorial...

Closed-Form oscillatory condition in electrical circuits containing two fractional order elements

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Express Briefs ; Volume 69, Issue 6 , 2022 , Pages 2687-2691 ; 15497747 (ISSN) Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Oscillatory condition in LTI dynamic systems is generally expressed as possessing purely imaginary solutions by their characteristic equations. Dealing with the class of fractional order systems, such a condition is equivalently restated as owing complex roots with specific arguments by a polynomial defined based on the system characteristic equation. The degree of this polynomial can be unboundedly high. Consequently, such statement for the oscillatory condition in fractional order systems, which is based on arguments of the roots of a polynomial with an unbounded degree, cannot be viewed as a closed-form expression. To tackle this challenge, this brief introduces an approach to obtain a...

Frequency content preservation in fractional multi-frequency oscillators despite reducing the number of energy storage elements

    , Article Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing ; Volume 41, Issue 6 , 2022 , Pages 3066-3080 ; 0278081X (ISSN) Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Recently, a class of fractional multi-frequency oscillators, constructed based on using n integrators and n half-order ones, has been introduced, whose steady-state responses contain sinusoidal components with 0.5 (3 n- 1 ) number of selectable frequencies. In this paper, the structure of the introduced multi-frequency oscillator is modified such that, notwithstanding the frequency content preservation, the number of its involved integrators is reduced. With no effect on the frequency content of the generated oscillations, this modification causes that the circuitry implementation of the considered class of multi-frequency oscillators can be done with a less number of energy storage...

    Abstract
DC-DC quasi-resonant converters (QRC) have the advantage of reducing switching losses and electromagnetic interference (EMI) which are the main disadvantages of high frequency power converters. The control and stabilization of these converters have always been a challenge. Traditionally, the dynamical model of the QRC is obtained using state space averaging followed by linearization about an operating point. The major flaw of this method is that state variables have large variations; thus, the linearized averaged model is not valid. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain a more precise model for the aim of stability analysis and controller design. Due to semiconductors switching, QRCs are...

    Abstract
This letter deals with a novel variant of antithetic integral feedback controller (AIFC) motifs which can feature robust perfect adaptation, a pervasive (desired) ability in natural (synthetic) biomolecular circuits, when coupled with a wide class of process networks to be regulated. Using the separation of time-scales in the proposed kind of AIFC, here we find a reduced-order controller that captures the governing slow part of the original solutions under suitable assumptions. Inspired by Rössler systems, we then make use of such a simpler controller to show that the antithetic circuit can exhibit chaotic behaviors with strange attractors, where the bifurcation from a homeostatic state to...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effectiveness of using nonlinear fluid/structure interaction for controlling the seismic response of the structures under near-field earthquake is investigated. For this purpose an SDOF Structure is considered which is equipped with the circular cylindrical liquid tank. Considering its fundamental mode of vibration, the structure is an idealised model of multi-degree of freedom system. Under 72 horizontal near-field earthquake excitations, the dynamic response of this system is examined studying three liquid sloshing modes. The dynamic response is investigated in the neighbourhood of 1:1 resonance between first unsymmetrical sloshing mode and SDOF structural mode. For this...

Loss of lock-in in VIV due to spanwise variations of diameters

    Abstract
Elongated cylindrical structures with non-uniform diameters, under cross-flow, are often encountered in marine engineering and energy harvesting devices. In this work, the vortex-induced vibrations of elastically supported circular tapered and wavy cylinders with different cross sections areas are studied numerically using a wake oscillator model. The effect of the tapering ratio on the amplitude of oscillation is particularly analyzed. For tapered cylinders it is found that the amplitude of oscillation under flow decreases strongly when a critical tapering is reached. This is consistent with experimental data. A similar effect is found in wavy cylinders. A third system, consisting of a...

    Abstract
In this research, to overcome the challenging problem of the vibration suppression in the wind turbine blade, an active robust adaptive finite-time model reference controller is introduced. First, edgewise vibrations of the wind turbine blade, with consideration of the platform heave displacements, is modeled by Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Then, the appropriate adaptation laws and control laws are introduced to compensate the uncertainties and guarantee the convergence to the desired reference model. The robustness and convergence of the designed adaptation and control laws are mathematically proved via finite-time Lyapunov theory. Performance of the designed robust adaptive finite-time...

    Abstract
Mechanical ventilation (MV) can result in long-term brain impairments that are resistant to treatment. The mechanisms underlying MV-induced brain function impairment remain unclear. Since nasal airflow modulates brain activity, here we evaluated whether reinstating airflow during MV could influence the memory performance of rats after recovery. Rats were allocated into two study groups: one group received rhythmic air-puff into the nasal cavity during MV and a control group that underwent ventilation without air-puff. During MV, air-puffs induced time-locked event potentials in OB, mPFC and vHPC and significantly increased the oscillatory activity at the air-puff frequency. Furthermore, in...

    Abstract
In the last decade, many potent analytical methods have been utilized to find the approximate solution of nonlinear differential equations. Some of these methods are energy balance method (EBM), homotopy perturbation method (HPM), variational iteration method (VIM), amplitude frequency formulation (AFF), and max-min approach (MMA). Besides the methods mentioned above, the Akbari-Ganji method (AGM) is a highly efficient analytical method to solve a wide range of nonlinear equations, including heat transfer, mass transfer, and vibration problems. In this study, it was constructed the approximate analytic solution for movement of two mechanical oscillators by employing the AGM. In the derived...
