    Abstract
Incorporating titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles into the polymeric matrix offers an opportunity to obtain nanocomposites with improved functionality. In this study, the commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (TNP) were surface treated by different concentrations of aminopropyl triethoxy silane (APTS) as a coupling agent and triethylamine (Et3N) as a surface grafting catalyst by an aqueous process to prepare a nanocomposite with superior properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed to confirm the successful surface modification of TNP. The prepared modified TiO2 nanoparticles (mTNP) with different weight fractions were used as...

    Abstract
In this study, conductive sodium alginate/polyaniline/graphene (PAG) NGCs were fabricated utilizing a straightforward solution extrusion method. The 4 point-probe test revealed that the addition of PAG has increased the conductivity of the NGCs up to 9.7 × 10−3 S.cm−1. The results also showed a remarkable increase in the Young modulus and SEM images revealed that the suggested process could produce NGCs continuously and uniformly with desirable porosity. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum proved a good interaction between PAG and the polymeric matrix. Furthermore, the addition of PAG slightly prevented biodegradation of the NGCs. Finally, the cell viability assay confirmed...

    Abstract
The present study proposes an exact solution for the release kinetic of a solute from inside a hollow cylindrical polymeric matrix into an infinite medium when the initial concentration of the solute (A) is greater than the solubility limit (Cs). A combination of analytical and numerical methods was used to calculate the solute concentration profile and the release rate. The model was developed for two different conditions including: (1) The release medium was flowing through the hollow cylinder in which the boundary layer may be neglected, and (2) The release medium inside the hollow cylinder was stagnant where the boundary layer needed to be considered. The results indicated that the...

    Abstract
In the context of controlled release drug delivery approaches, the systems providing zero-order release kinetics have special advantages. Through employing these systems, drug concentration could be maintained within the therapeutic window over release time; thus maximum effectiveness alongside minimized side effects of the drug are achieved. However, obtaining zero-order drug release is extremely challenging. One of the main obstacles is the fact that implemented devices should be designed to overcome the decreasing mass transfer driving force, especially, in polymeric systems in which diffusion mechanism is dominant. In this study, we developed a new configuration of a polymeric matrix...

    Abstract
In this study, a new type of magnetite nanocomposite with a core–shell structure was synthesized using Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a core and polyaniline (PANI) as a shell. For this propose, the surface of Fe3O4 was chemically modified with hexamethylenediisocyanate (HMDI) to improve its compatibility and interphase interaction with the polymeric matrix. Thereafter, the PANI was reacted with modified Fe3O4 to anchor them to PANI by covalent bands which acted as a shell. In the second step, the poly (maleic acid-co-acrylic acid) (P(MAc-co-AA)) as polymeric dopant for the PANI was synthesized. Finally, the PANI anchored to Fe3O4 was immersed in an aqueous solution of poly (maleic...

    Abstract
Numerical and analytical exact solutions of diffusional release from a cylindrical polymeric matrix into an infinite medium have been developed in which the initial solute loading (A) is greater than solubility limit (Cs). Also, the effects of boundary layers on the drug release rate have been studied. The numerical solution is valid for any initial drug loading whereas analytical solution can be used for high values of drug loading. Comparisons have been made between numerical and analytical exact solutions in upper and lower bounds (A/Cs蠑1 and A/Cs→1) and previously presented approximate solution. The presented results validate the proposed numerical solution

Synthesis and characterization of a bentonite-alginate microspherical adsorbent for removal of uranyl ions from aqueous Solutions

    , Article Separation Science and Technology ; Volume 45, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 288-298 ; 01496395 (ISSN) Tayyebi, A ; Khanchi, A ; Ghofrani, M.B ; Outokesh, M ; Sharif University of Technogy

    Abstract
A novel microspherical adsorbent for the removal of uranium from aqueous solutions was developed by immobilizing of natural bentonite in the polymeric matrix of calcium alginate. Different uptake properties of the prepared microspheres were examined using batch, stirred and column methods. The adsorbent showed high affinity toward uranium ions, especially at pHs above 3. Major uptake mechanisms included ion exchange, chelating of the (UO2)2+ ions to the -OH groups of alginate, and surface complexation with bentonite. Surprisingly, the capacity of microspheres was higher than both its constituents, revealing that a synergetic effect occurs. Adsorption kinetics was controlled by slow chemical...

    Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (NPs) stored in pore-arrays (pa) SU-8 photoresist layer were utilized as an antibacterial nanocomposition against E. coli bacteria. The pa-SU-8 matrix was fabricated by an optical interference lithography method resulting in small pores with a diameter of ∼50 nm and a depth of ∼100 nm. The Ag NPs were deposited on the soft polymeric matrix at different drying temperatures of 50 and 90 °C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the deposited silver NPs were substantially in the metallic state, independent from the drying condition. However, the concentration of the immobilized Ag NPs on the film surface increased (by a factor of 2.5) at the higher drying...

    Abstract
A small volume fraction of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) added in a polymeric matrix increases significantly the mechanical properties of the polymers. It is experimentally determined from the TEM images of CNT-based nanocomposites that nanotubes don't stand straight in their embedded matrix and they have some curvature in their shape. The load transfer mechanism between CNT and polymer matrix is also one of the most important issues which is not understood explicitly, yet. In this paper a wavy Single Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT) is modeled as inclusion in a polymer matrix and its effective mechanical properties is studied. This model is based on using 3-D Representive Volume Element (RVE) with...

    , Article Particuology ; Volume 9, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 480-485 ; 16742001 (ISSN) Ahmadi, S. J ; Outokesh, M ; Hosseinpour, M ; Mousavand, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A simple and efficient method was developed for fabricating spherical granules of CuO catalyst via a three-step procedure. In the first step, copper oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrothermal decomposition of copper nitrate solution under supercritical condition. Then, they were immobilized in the polymeric matrix of calcium alginate, and followed by high-temperature calcination in an air stream as the third step, in which carbonaceous materials were oxidized, to result in a pebble-type catalyst of high porosity. The produced CuO nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) that revealed an average size of 5 nm, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and thermo...
