Multiphase Simulation of Frost in High Pressure Air Flow Systems with Pressure Regulator

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asgari, Ehsan (Author) ; Darbandi, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, our objective is to simulate the growth of frost for humid air passing through pressure regulators. The study is carried out in two main stages. First, we use an empirical method to model the formation of frost for a humid-air passing over a flat plate. The model is a semi-2D one and that it is limited to predict the frost growth at a particular station along the plate, considering the local flow heat transfer parameters. We show the validity of results comparing with available experimental data. Second, we numerically simulate the frost formation and growth for a humid air passing between two parallel plates. In this regard, the semi empirical method is suitably coupled with...

    Abstract
We examine the economic implications of the SEC disclosure rules for companies doing business with Iran on their riskiness of debt. We exploit Section 219 of the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act (ITRA), which requires companies listed on U.S exchanges to disclose their activities and transactions with Iranian institutions. We analyze the impact of the first ITRA disclosure on the cost of capital for both American and foreign companies listed on the US exchanges. Using a difference-in-difference approach, we document a negative impact of ITRA disclosures on loan spread and credit rating of foreign companies. Further, using textual analysis, we identify the elements in the...

Development and Validation of an EFL Self-Regulated Learning Questionnaire

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafari, Hamid (Author) ; Salehi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Rahimi, Ali (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Self-regulated learning, though having swept educational psychology's literature like a tidal wave (Boekaerts, 1999), and also, compared to other constructs such as metacognition and learning strategies, has remained comparatively uncharted in L2 research. One preliminary step to chart this concept is to develop questionnaires for it. With these and other things in mind, the principal purpose of this study was to develop a questionnaire in English and Persian to measure self-regulated language learning capacity and behavior of Iranian EFL learners. The development of the questionnaire was guided by two pilots (412 participants), content validation through expert judgment, cognitive...

Analysis of Genes Regulating Beta Cells Cell Cycle

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saraei, Tannaz (Author) ; Motahari, Abolfazl (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a group of disorders where the level of blood sugar remains high for a long period of time. This increase may be due to either reduced insulin secretion from the pancreatic gland, or insulin resistance, or both. Another key reason is the destruction of beta cells due to functional defect in the body’s immune system. Current treatments include controlling diet, insulin injection and pancreatic transplantation, all of which are temporary. For this reason, finding genetic factors participating in the progression of the disease and adapting treatments to these factors are under intensive studies. In this thesis, available information resources including genomic, biological...

Inferring Gene Regulatory Networks, Using Machine Learning Approaches

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gheiby, Sanaz (Author) ; Manzuri, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Gene regulatory network consists of a set of genes; interacting with each other via their protein products. Such interations lead to the regulation of the genes’ production rate. A breakdown in the regulatory process, may lead to some kinds of diseases. Therefore, understanding the gene regulatory process, is beneficial for both diagnosis and treatment. In this thesis, gene regulatory networks are modeled by the means of dynamic Bayesian networks. We have used sampling based methods, in order to learn the network structure. As these methos have a very high computational cost; we have used a correlation test to prune the search space. This way, an undirected network skeleton is obtained; for...

Comparative Analysis of National Building Code 19 and Successful International Standards

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Danesh Edalat, Mohammad (Author) ; Mortaheb, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In response to the growing energy consumptions levels in buildings, many countries have introduced standards and codes aimed at reducing their national building energy consumption levels as well as managing the amount of pollutants. Title 19 of Iran’s National Building Regulation (NBR) was first introduced in 1991. It is projected that Title 19 can lead to a 30 to 50% reduction in the amount of buildings energy consumption. Nevertheless, evidence suggests that the introduction of Title 19 NBR has not led to substantial reduction in building energy consumption in Iran. Unlike Title 19 NBR, similar standards in other countries have proven to be very effective in reducing the building energy...

Examining and Choosing the Appropriate Control Algorithm and Controller Design for a Ship in Order to Path Following

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohebbi, Matin (Author) ; Seif, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, it has been tried to design two controllers for a KVLCC2 tanker assuming unknown hydrodynamic characteristics and its mathematical model in order to maintain its course and speed. At first, due to the lack of an experimental model of a vessel, a three-degree-of-freedom MMG model of the KVLCC2 vessel was modeled in the SIMULINK, MATLAB, to be used as a basis for other tests and simulations. Therefore, by using the designed three degree of freedom model, all parameters affecting the floating maneuver were examined. In the next section, using the DNV standard, we designed two wind and sea current systems for system input disturbances. And finally, by using dynamic models of...

Design and Implementation a Smart System for Controlling and Protection of Tele-Communication Manholes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi, Ali (Author) ; Safarian, Amin Ghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The telecommunication manhole is a place that the cables of the telephone network are located on it. line Inside these manholes, there are equipment and cables for telephone. The number of these places is many, so protection and maintenance of the manholes have been problematic in case of theft of the cap, equipment inside them and flooding. Also, lack of inspection officers and the high cost of repairing and replacing parts inside them, has made it difficult for telecom companies to handle these problems. The only way to connect the manhole is a telephone line inside them. Also, there is no proper electrical power inside the manhole, so the design and implementation of a system that...

Design and Fabrication of DC-DC Buck Converter and LDO with Tunable Voltage Conversion Ratio in a wide Range in 0.18µm-HV BCD Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tafaghodi Jami, Sadra (Author) ; Medi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Zolghadri, Mohammad Reza (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
By reducing the size of the transistor, it is possible to implement systems on a chip. For this puspose, these chips require different supply voltage levels. Therefore, two types of linear and switching converters are used to convert DC voltage level. At high convertion ratios, linear regulators have lower efficiencies than switching converters. However, in switching converters, due to their nature of functionality, very high efficiencies (near 100 percent) can be achieved. The advantages of linear regulators include low output voltage ripple, no need for off-chip elements, low noise, and simplicity. For this reason, a linear regulator is usually used in the output of the switching...
