    Abstract
In the current study, thin-film nanocomposite membranes (TFN-Mx) based on a zwitterion-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) have been developed for the forward osmosis (FO) salt-water separation process. The active polyamide layer was formed through the interfacial polymerization of the m-phenylenediamine aqueous phase (with or without the presence of MIL-125-NH-CC-Cys) and the trimesoyl chloride organic phase. In comparison with the results from the surface of the unmodified membrane, a nanofiller-incorporated TFN-M0.10 membrane represents a smoother and more wettable surface that collaborates synergically to enhance the membrane antifouling ability. Among the examined membranes,...

Slope stability of an unsaturated embankment with and without natural pore water salinity subjected to rainfall infiltration

    , Article Yantu Lixue/Rock and Soil Mechanics ; Volume 43, Issue 8 , 2022 , Pages 2136-2148 ; 10007598 (ISSN) Sadeghi, H ; Kolahdooz, A ; Ahmadi, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
Biodiversity Research Center Academia Sinica  2022
    Abstract
Natural soils contain a certain amount of salt in the form of dissolved ions or electrically charged atoms, originated from the long-term erosion by acidic rainwater. The dissolved salt poses an extra osmotic water potential being normally neglected in laboratory measurements and numerical analyses. However, ignorance of salinity may result in overestimation of stability, and the design may not be as conservative as thought. Therefore, this research aims to first experimentally examine the influence of pore water salinity on water retention curve and saturated permeability of natural dispersive loess under saline and desalinated conditions. Second, the measured parameters are used for...

Stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte brushes for regulating streaming current magnetic field and energy conversion efficiency in soft nanopores

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 34, Issue 8 , 2022 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Sadeghi, M ; Saidi, M. H ; Kröger, M ; Tagliazucchi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The electrokinetic energy conversion, electroviscous effect, and induced internal and external magnetic fields in a smart polyelectrolyte grafted "soft"nanopore with pH responsiveness are studied here using an efficient molecular theory approach. The analysis is based on writing the total free energy of the system, including the conformational entropy of the flexible, self-avoiding polymer chains and the translational entropy of the mobile species, the electrostatic interactions, and the free energy due to chemical equilibrium reactions. Then, the free energy is minimized, while satisfying the necessary constraints to find the equilibrium state of the system. The predictions of the model are...

Semi-empirical modelling of hydraulic conductivity of clayey soils exposed to deionized and saline environments

    , Article Journal of Contaminant Hydrology ; Volume 249 , 2022 ; 01697722 (ISSN) Hedayati Azar, A ; Sadeghi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
Clay liners are widely used as porous membrane barriers to control solute transport and to prevent the leakage of leachate both in horizontal and vertical flow scenarios, such as the isolated base and ramps of sanitary landfills. Despite the primary importance of saturated hydraulic conductivity in a reliable simulation of fluid flow through clay barriers, there is no model to predict hydraulic conductivity of clayey soils permeated with saline aqueous solutions because most of the current models were developed for pure water. Therefore, the main motivation behind this study is to derive semi-empirical models for simulating the hydraulic conductivity of clayey soils in the presence of...

On comparison of three multi-feed osmotic-mediation-based configurations for brine management: Techno-economic optimization and exergy analysis

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 525 , 2022 ; 00119164 (ISSN) Beni, A. N ; Ghofrani, I ; Moosavi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
This study aims at analyzing the performance of three units known as low salt rejection reverse osmosis (LSRRO), split-feed counterflow reverse osmosis (SF-CFRO), and split-brine counterflow reverse osmosis (SB-CFRO) and implementing them in a modified multi-stage multi-feed counter-current membrane with cascade recycle for dewatering hypersaline streams to the salinity appropriate for crystallizers' feed. Exergy and primitive pinch analysis showed that dewatering is limited in SF-CFRO as the permeate inlet dictates the maximum salinity difference at the pinch point as well as high frictional pressure loss in the permeate channel. SB-CFRO and LSRRO units can reach high salinities by...

    Desiccation of a saline lake as a lock-in phenomenon: A socio-hydrological perspective

    , Article Science of the Total Environment ; Volume 811 , 2022 ; 00489697 (ISSN) Pouladi, P ; Nazemi, A. R ; Pouladi, M ; Nikraftar, Z ; Mohammadi, M ; Yousefi, P ; Yu, D. J ; Afshar, A ; Aubeneau, A ; Sivapalan, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Understanding of how anthropogenic droughts occur in socio-hydrological systems is critical in studying resilience of these systems. This is especially relevant when a “lock-in” toward watershed desiccation occurs as an emergent outcome of coupling among social dynamics and surface and underground water processes. How the various processes collectively fit together to reinforce such a lock-in and what may be a critical or ignored feedback worsening the state of the socio-hydrological systems remains poorly understood. Here we tackle this gap by focusing on the case of Lake Urmia in Iran, a saline lake that faces the same fate as that of Aral Sea due to over-extraction of water sources that...

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 56, Issue 1 , 2022 ; 00223727 (ISSN) Hakimi, M ; Habibi, A ; Sanaee, Z ; Ghasemi, S ; Mohajerzadeh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Institute of Physics  2022
    Abstract
This study has investigated the effect of carbon coating on the electrochemical performance of SnO2 Nanowires (NWs) as an electrode along with a bis (trifluoromethane) sulfonimide lithium (LiTFSI)-based electrolyte in a lithium-ion battery (LIB). The vapor-liquid-solid approach has been used to grow SnO2 NWs on the stainless steel mesh current collector. The obtained results have demonstrated that the utilization of the LiTFSI-based electrolyte improved the battery performance with the SnO2 NWs electrode over the LiPF6-based electrolyte. This may be due to the formation of a stable and thin solid electrolyte interphase layer. Since bare SnO2 NWs exhibit inferior cycling stability due to...

    ICE Publishing  2021
    Abstract
Laboratory investigation on the influence of solute concentration on the soil water-retention curve (SWRC) and volumetric behaviour of expansive soils has received much attention in recent years due to increasing environmental pollution. However, most studies only considered applying wetting or drying path with almost no attention to hydraulic hysteresis. Furthermore, these studies have focused on examining expansive soils and only marginal effort has been devoted to collapsible soils. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to systematically explore the SWRC and shrinkage characteristics of an artificially made collapsible soil at various molar concentrations. The tests were...

A fast iterative method for removing impulsive noise from sparse signals

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology ; Volume 31, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 38-48 ; 10518215 (ISSN) Sadrizadeh, S ; Zarmehi, N ; Kangarshahi, E. A ; Abin, H ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2021
    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new method to reconstruct a signal corrupted by noise where both signal and noise are sparse but in different domains. The main contribution of our algorithm is its low complexity; it has much lower run-time than most other algorithms. The reconstruction quality of our algorithm is both objectively (in terms of PSNR and SSIM) and subjectively better or comparable to other state-of-the-art algorithms. We provide a cost function for our problem, present an iterative method to find its local minimum, and provide the analysis of the algorithm. As an application of this problem, we apply our algorithm for Salt-and-Pepper noise (SPN) and Random-Valued Impulsive Noise...

    , Article Journal of Molecular Liquids ; Volume 301 , 2020 Chogani, A ; Moosavi, A ; Bagheri Sarvestani, A ; Shariat, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
In this study, the mechanisms of passing water and salt ions through nanoporous single-layer graphene membrane are simulated using classical molecular dynamics. The effects of functional groups placed in nanopores and feed water's salt concentration on water desalination are investigated. In order to understand the role of functional groups in desalination process, Methyl, Ethyl and a combination of Fluorine and Hydrogen molecules are distributed around the nanopores. In all cases, different number of functional molecules is employed in order to find an optimum distribution of the groups at hand. The results show that an appropriate distribution of Alkyl groups can properly stop the salt...

Numerical investigation and optimization of indirect freeze desalination

    , Article Desalination ; Volume 481 , 2020 Eghtesad, A ; Salakhi, M ; Afshin, H ; Hannani, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Access to potable water with standard quality is an inevitable component of human's lives. Freeze desalination, by consuming lower energy compared to other techniques, relies on the exertion of a cold source which is then accompanied by simultaneous rejection of impurities from water. Regarding this, a numerical study on freeze desalination in a hollow cylinder is carried out to determine the effects of the design variables such as heat flux, hydraulic diameter, initial salt concentration, and freezing time on the ice mass, ice salinity, ice generation speed, and Nusselt number on the cold surface of the inner tube. Results show that increasing the value of heat flux from −250 [Formula...

Ion transport through graphene oxide fibers as promising candidate for bblue energy harvesting

    , Article Carbon ; Volume 165 , 2020 , Pages 267-274 Ghanbari, H ; Esfandiar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Nanostructured graphene based membranes demonstrated excellent capabilities in various applications in nanofiltration and energy conversion due to unique atomically smooth surfaces and adjustable pore size or interlayers spacing at Angstrom scales. There are some reports on the osmotic power generation using physical confinements and electrostatic interactions between ions and GO membranes. However, the results indicated insufficient power densities (˂1 W/m2) can be achieved because of swelling of interlayer spacing of the GO membranes upon exposure to aqueous solutions which results in reducing the influence of confinement on ionic motilities. Here, the GO fibers is presented as one...

Effect of metal oxide based TiO2 nanoparticles on anaerobic digestion process of lignocellulosic substrate

    , Article Energy ; Volume 191 , 2020 Ghofrani Isfahani, P ; Baniamerian, H ; Tsapekos, P ; Alvarado Morales, M ; Kasama, T ; Shahrokhi, M ; Vossoughi, M ; Angelidaki, I ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Lignocellulosic materials are recalcitrant to bioconversion, due to their rigid physiochemical structure. In this work, the effects of Fe2O3–TiO2 and NiO–TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and FeCl3 and NiCl2 salts, on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of wheat straw have been investigated. For this purpose, metal oxide-TiO2 NPs were synthesized and fully characterized. Results showed that addition of 0.252 mg of NiO–TiO2/g total solids (TS) to batch assays resulted in increase of soluble chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 67% increase in volatile fatty acids (VFAs) concentration compared to control tests during the first 4 days of experiments. These results indicate that hydrolysis and acidogenesis rates...

Mesoscopic rheological modeling of drilling fluids: Effects of the electrolyte

, Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 195 , 2020 Kariman Moghaddam, A ; Ramazani Saadatabadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Drilling fluid is a complex fluid, including base fluid and other materials, carrying out the vital functions during drilling operation such as cutting transport and controlling formation pressure. In order to optimize performance of a drilling process, a reliable rheological model is required in the computation of fluid flow dynamics. Time-independent Generalized Newtonian formulation are the most common models for describing the rheological behavior of drilling fluids due to its simplicity and ease of use, in spite the fact that they are not able to predict the normal stresses and could not consider effects of active components on the rheological behavior of the drilling fluid and also...

Effect of distance-dependent dispersivity on density-driven flow in porous media

    , Article Journal of Hydrology ; Volume 589 , October , 2020 Younes, A ; Fahs, M ; Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Simmons, C. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
In this study, the effect of distance-dependent dispersion coefficients on density-driven flow is investigated. The linear asymptotic model, which assumes that dispersivities increase linearly with distance from the source of contamination and reach asymptotic values at a large asymptotic distance, is employed. An in-house numerical model is adapted to handle distance-dependent dispersion. The effect of asymptotic-dispersion on aquifer contamination is analyzed for two tests: (i) a seawater intrusion problem in a coastal aquifer and (ii) a leachate transport problem from a surface deposit site. Global Sensitivity Analysis (GSA) combined with the Polynomial Chaos Expansion (PCE) surrogate...

Effects of salinity, ion type, and aging time on the crude oil-brine interfacial properties under gravity condition

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 195 , December , 2020 Khajepour, H ; Akhlaghi Amiri, H. A ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
In this study, the impacts of salinity, ion type, and aging process were investigated on coalescence and spreading of crude oil interfaces (including an oil droplet and an oil film) under gravity, through drop rest time measurement techniques, aided by an image analysis system. Three different salt solutions of NaCl, Na2SO4, and MgCl2 were studied at different ionic strengths, ranged from 1% to 150% of Persian Gulf seawater ionic strength. According to the results, aging the oil droplet in the brine increased the interfacial rigidity. Addition of a gas phase - by thinning the surface oil film - almost doubled both rest time and spreading time values. In the aged mode, the presence of salt in...
