    Abstract
Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) have gained prominence in recent years, and their structural design is crucial for improvement of energy harvesting performance and sensing. Wearable biosensors can receive information about human health without the need for external charging, with energy instead provided by collection and storage modules that can be integrated into the biosensors. However, the failure to design suitable components for sensing remains a significant challenge associated with biomedical sensors. Therefore, design of TENG structures based on the human body is a considerable challenge, as biomedical sensors, such as implantable and wearable self-powered sensors, have recently...

    Abstract
Reliability of routing mechanisms in wireless networks is typically measured with Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR). Basically, PDR is reported with an optimistic assumption that the topology is fully constructed, and the nodes have started their packet transmission. This is despite the fact that prior to being able to transmit packets, nodes must first join the network, and then try to keep connected as much as possible. This is a key factor in the overall reliability provided by the routing protocols, especially in mobile IoT applications, where disconnections occur frequently. Nevertheless, there is a lack of appropriate metrics, which could evaluate the routing mechanisms from this...

    Abstract
The development of inexpensive, equipment-free, portable, and user/environmentally-friendly analytical devices that can be efficiently utilized for on-site detection of PA is still a great challenge. To address these unmet demands, we have developed a smartphone-based disposable sensing bioplatform through immobilization of chlorophyll in a cotton thread for fluorescent monitoring of picric acid (PA). The fluorescence quenching of chlorophyll upon increasing the PA concentration based on the inner filter effect was considered as the sensing strategy in the developed sensor. The fabricated thread-based microfluidic sensing bioplatform was further coupled with a compact, low cost, portable,...

    Abstract
Monitoring the oxygen in the fume and controlling its amount at high temperatures is an efficient way to regulate combustion efficiency. Zirconia can be an attractive candidate for use in oxygen sensors due to its good physical and chemical properties. The crystal structure of pure zirconia nanopowder due to the lack of cubic phase cannot be used for the fabrication of gas sensor electrodes. Moreover, the change of temperature during ceramic processing and application can promote structural and phase stresses. In this work, to achieve a pure cubic phase, yttria was successfully added to zirconia by a large-scale and effective method called Pechini. The yttria-stabilized zirconia nanopowders...

    Abstract
The development of a nonenzymatic glucose sensor working in real human body conditions through a noninvasive sampling approach has attracted considerable attention. Hence, this work focuses on the development of a new nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on flower-like Au nanostructures (F-AuNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) as a supporting matrix. The F-AuNTs-GO hybrid was synthesized by simple drop casting of the GO suspension onto the graphite sheet (GS) followed by electrodeposition of F-AuNTs on GO nanosheets at 3 V in a two-electrode system. The electrocatalytic activity of the F-AuNTs-GO/GS sensor toward glucose electrooxidation was initially evaluated in a 0.1 M buffer phosphate solution (pH...

    Abstract
In this study a variety of novel symmetrically and asymmetrically functionalized pillar[5]arenes were synthesized, structurally characterized and applied as ionophores in PVC-plasticized membrane potentiometric sensors. During the sensitivity studies it was found that these novel sensors demonstrate pronounced cationic response towards different metal ions in aqueous solutions. A selectivity evaluation revealed that the developed sensors do not possess sharp preferences to particular ions, but offer a broad cross-sensitivity and can be employed in potentiometric multisensor systems. © 2022 by the authors

    Abstract
The spatial sparsity of targets in the radar scene is widely used in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar signal processing, either to improve the detection/estimation performance of the radar or to reduce the cost of the conventional MIMO radars (e.g., by reducing the number of antennas). While sparse target estimation is the main challenge in such an approach, here, we address the design of a compressive-sensing-based MIMO radar, which facilitates such estimations. In particular, we propose an efficient solution for the problem of joint power allocation and antenna placement based on minimizing the number of transmit antennas while constraining the coherence of the sensing matrix....

    Abstract
In this study, graphene oxide/gold/methylene blue (GO/Au/MB) ternary composites were synthesized and characterized through UV–vis, FTIR, XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM analyses towards plasmon-enhanced singlet oxygen (1O2) generation. Through using gold nanoparticles and MB photosensitizers, the visible light adsorption capability of GO was enhanced by 115%. Moreover, applying this ternary composite as a photocatalyst under visible light interestingly revealed a drastic step-increase of 14% (i.e., from 9 to 23%) in the conversion of photooxygenation of Anthracene. This behavior was rationalized using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations which confirms the plasmonic field of gold...

Improving the performance of helical motion resolver based on accurate modelling of longitudinal end effect

    , Article IET Electric Power Applications ; Volume 16, Issue 10 , 2022 , Pages 1212-1222 ; 17518660 (ISSN) Zare, F ; Nasiri Gheidari, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Using multiple position sensors in the control system of Two-Degrees of Freedom (2-DOF) motors causes it more complicated than that of conventional 1-DOF ones. However, employing a 2-DOF position sensor in comparison with two independent sensors, reduces the complexity, mass and volume of the system. The common 2-DOF sensors are able to determine the position in linear, rotational, and helical motion. Yet, they suffer from accuracy reduction due to the longitudinal end effect. Therefore, analytical modelling and the relevant compensation methods are discussed. The accuracy of the model is approved by comparing its results with those of 3D time transient finite element method. Afterwards, the...

    Abstract
This paper presents a cycle by cycle Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) demodulator, able to demodulate a FSK signal with 1% frequency modulation index (MI), in a single cycle. Based on the proposed demodulation scheme, a high rate data transmission link can be established through a high-Q inductive coupling link, breaking the basic tradeoff between the power transfer efficiency (PTE) and data rate in single carrier wireless power and data transfer systems. Designed and simulated with 0.18μ m CMOS process, the proposed FSK demodulator, detects successfully a 5Mbps data with a carrier frequency of 5MHz. A test chip is fabricated in 180nm CMOS technology. Measurement results shows that the...

    Abstract
Localization of radio-frequency (RF) transmitters using time difference of arrival (TDOA)-based methods is one of the conventional passive techniques that admits noncooperative source position finding, but suffers from challenging requirements such as precise intersensor synchronization and high-throughput transmission data links. A tradeoff governing the TDOA systems is in the sensor placement configuration. The more distance the sensors are placed, the more accurate localization is carried out, while the cost for the synchronization and data link increases, at the same time. In this work, a novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided localization system is proposed that enjoys...

Presentation of a novel variable reluctance tubular resolver

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Volume 69, Issue 12 , 2022 , Pages 13773-13780 ; 02780046 (ISSN) Zare, F ; Keyvannia, A ; Nasiri Gheidari, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Encoders and resolvers are the most common position sensors in controlling electrical machines. However, due to their ability to work under harsh conditions, resolvers are more preferred. In linear position detection, the transversal edge effects and the longitudinal end-effects adversely affect the accuracy of conventional linear resolvers. On the contrary, due to the cylindrical symmetry of tubular machines, they are not subject to the edge effects. With this idea, this article presents a novel linear VR resolver with a tubular structure to achieve higher accuracy than the existing linear resolvers. A magnetic equivalent circuit model is then developed to prove the correct performance of...

    Abstract
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) emit near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence that is ideal for optical sensing. However, the low quantum yields diminish the sensor's signal-to-noise ratio and limits the penetration depths for in vivo measurements. In this study, we perform a systematic investigation of the plasmonic effects of Ag and Au nanoparticles of various geometries to tune and even enhance the fluorescence intensity of single-stranded DNA-wrapped SWCNTs (ssDNA-SWCNTs). We observe a chirality-dependent NIR fluorescence enhancement that varies with both nanoparticle shape and material, with Au nanorods increasing (7, 5) and (7, 6) chirality emissions by 80% and 60% and Ag nanotriangles...

    Abstract
Resolver, as an electromagnetic sensor, is widely used in many industrial applications. It can detect the position of the rotary part of the electric machines precisely. In commercial resolvers, excitation winding is connected to the High-Frequency (HF) AC source. The amplitude-modulated voltages induced in signal windings need to be demodulated in order to calculate the envelope of the output signals and detect the position accordingly. On the other hand, in PM-resolver, signal windings are replaced by Hall-effect sensors to measure the DC magnetic ux, which is produced by permanent magnets. In this study, the performance of both AC and DC ux resolvers is investigated under di erent...
