, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tahmasbi, Mehran (Author) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Shad, Saeed (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Characteristic of the reservoir, including the important discussion in the oil industry, is widely practiced in the modeling, simulation and EOR. One of the methods fordetermining the specifications of the reservoir is geostatistical technique. This means that a large number of realizations of the reservoir model to assess the uncertainty in reservoir descriptions of performance predictions should be made. However flow simulation of all these realizations is very difficult due to cost and time calculations. To mend the problem, we use ranking realization that finally a minor number of realizations are selected and flow simulation is used to them.In this project, we use streamline simulation to...

Optimization of Well Placement and Number of Wells in one of Iranian oil reservoirs using Streamline Simulation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Afshari, Saeed (Author) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor) ; Amin Shahidy, Babak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Determining the optimized number and best locations for new wells is a challenging problem due to the nonlinearly correlation and uncertainty associated with engineering, geological and economical variables affecting reservoir performance. The proposed location and configuration for new producers and injectors is usually nontrivial because of the complexity of the fluid flow in highly heterogeneous reservoirs. It depends on reservoir and fluid properties, well and surface equipment specifications and economic criteria. Various approaches have been proposed for this problem. Among those, direct optimization using the numerical simulator as the evaluation function is the most common...

Optimization of Valve Setting in Smart Wells Using Multi-Segment Well Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahnama, Alireza (Author) ; Massihi, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Smart wellsareunconventional wells with down-hole devices installed on their production tubing. Such wells allow us to continuouslymonitor flow rates, pressures, temperature and periodically adjust down-holevalves setting without any production intervention. This makes smart well technology to be considered as one of the most significantbreakthroughs in reservoir management technologies. So, modeling and simulating smart wellsautomated action represents a challenge in forecastingtheir performances. One of the easiest ways to model such wells is to transform theminto a multi-segment well with the ability tocontrol each segment independently. By using the commercial reservoir simulator,...

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Vol. 32, issue. 2 , 2014 , pp. 170-179 ; ISSN: 10916466 Afshari, S ; Pishvaie, M. R ; Aminshahidy, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Optimal well placement is a crucial step in reservoir development process. The key points in such an optimization process are using a fast function evaluation tool and development of an efficient optimization algorithm. This study presents an approach that uses particle swarm optimization algorithm in conjunction with streamline simulation to determine the optimum well locations within a reservoir, regarding a modified net present value as the objective. Performance of this algorithm was investigated through several different examples, and compared to that of genetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA) methods. It was observed that particle swarm optimization algorithm outperformed...

    Abstract
Optimal well placement is a crucial step in efficient reservoir development process which significantly affects the productivity and economical benefits of an oil reservoir. However, it is a complex and challenging problem due to the different engineering, geological and economical variables involved. This leads to a very large number of potential scenarios that must be evaluated using numerical reservoir simulations. The key points in such an optimization process are using a fast function evaluation tool and development of an efficient and robust optimization algorithm that can find good solutions with a minimum required number of function evaluations. This study presents an approach that...

Streamline-based history matching constrained to reservoir geostatistics using gradual deformation technique

    , Article Petroleum Science and Technology ; Volume 29, Issue 17 , 2011 , Pages 1765-1777 ; 10916466 (ISSN) Shojaei, H ; Pishvaie, M. R ; Kamali, M. R ; Badakhshan, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A new and general procedure for history matching that uses streamline simulation and a gradual deformation technique has been proposed. Streamline trajectories define the major flow paths and help the algorithm to modify the reservoir model only in the regions that cause the mismatch between simulation results and field observations. The use of a gradual deformation technique enables the algorithm to remain constrained to reservoir geostatistics. It also reduces the number of independent variables in the optimization problem. In our algorithm, effective conductivities are defined along each streamline. The effective streamline conductivities are then adjusted using the values of measured and...
