A Critical Review of the Social Construction of Technology Thesis: Do Society Constructs Technology?

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shafi Khani, Mohamad Amin (Author) ; Taqavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
However “The Social Construction of Technology (SCOT)” is the title of a thesis in the domain of Science and Technology Studies (STS), it has an important effect on the philosophy of technology. In this paper I try to elaborate and criticize SCOT’s approach. For this purpose we need to answer the question “what is Technology exactly?”. So in the first chapter, I defined Technology. After reviewing some of it’s famous definitions, I defined the joint of technologies based on the “Dual nature of technical artefacts” thesis. Because of the wide range of technologies, I have concentrated on “Technical Artefacts”, although I was not inattentive to other meanings of technology, especially...

Proposing a Method for Forecasting Interrupted Time Series based on Fuzzy Logic: a System Dynamics Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Modarres Vahid, Melika (Author) ; Khedmati, Majid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Performing analysis and forecasting is crucial. Better forecasting will lead to better decisions. One method for predicting the future is time series analysis. In reality, it is common for an intervention to occur and alter the characteristics of a time series. In recent years, interrupted time series analysis has been receiving a lot of attention. A new forecasting method for interrupted time series has been developed in this study. This is a system dynamics-based approach. At every stage of the approach, system thinking is incorporated. In order to model the effects of a given intervention, common modes of behavior in dynamic systems are used. Furthermore, control theory has been used to...

    Abstract
Healthcare industry, in terms of gross national product, is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors of almost all countries. It is not surprising that a large amount of research has been focused on advancing medical practices and improving management methods in healthcare systems. One of the most important areas for improvement is patient flow management. Patient flow indicates the capability of a health care system in providing fast, reliable, and efficient services. Although capacity of health care system has grown, patients still have been facing long delays before getting into the system due to ineffective management. Queuing models can offer appropriate methods for analyzing and...

Synthetic Model Based in Viable System Model and System Dynamics for Analysis and Design of Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Vahidi Monfared, Amin (Author) ; Shadrokh, Shahram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This is common for organizations to don't move in their specified mission statement direction, because of pressures for saving themselves in reaction to environment changes. This problem can be addressed as conflict between survival and identity. In this thesis we approach this problem by synthesizing "Viable System Model" and "System Dynamics". Basic of this model shaped on viable system model structure and system dynamics modeling. In literature there is only two such models. But they are not detailed enough for providing mathematical analysis. In this research, law of requisite variety (one of the key principles in cybernetics) has been quantified. In this synthetic model, appropriate...

Stabilizing fractional-order PI and PD controllers: An integer-order implemented system approach

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Part I: Journal of Systems and Control Engineering ; Volume 224, Issue 8 , 2010 , Pages 893-903 ; 09596518 (ISSN) Rahimian, M. A ; Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
This paper proposes a scheme for computing the stable regions from which the parameters of fractional-order proportional-integral (PI) and proportional-derivative (PD) controllers can be selected. In particular, a previously investigated method for plotting the stability regions of PI λ and PDμ controllers is extended to their integer-order approximations. Next, the two stability regions are compared and their overlapping sections, referred to as the implementable stability region, are derived. In order for the final closed-loop system to be stable, the designer must choose the controller parameters from the overlapping section of the two stability regions. Simulation results for two example...

    Abstract
Based on general "System Theory", a system when it comes to its intended operational life; must exhibits three distinguished phases of (1) Pre-mission, (2) Mission, and (3) Post-mission. During Pre-mission one evaluates the system elements readiness to conduct the mission; their proper configurations in addition to their support roles to conduct their organizational role. During Post-mission, we check whether our evaluations were in fact, correct to the levels expected. Both pre and post mission phases are necessary for a successful mission. An education system; especially designed for space applications which aims to deliver the necessary workforce for the relevant industries and other...

Rational approximations in the simulation and implementation of fractional-order dynamics: A descriptor system approach

    , Article Automatica ; Volume 46, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 94-100 ; 00051098 (ISSN) Tavazoei, M. S ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
This paper deals with issues related to the use of rational approximations in the simulation of fractional-order systems and practical implementations of fractional-order dynamics and controllers. Based on the mathematical formulation of the problem, a descriptor model is found to describe the rational approximating model. This model is analyzed and compared with the original fractional-order system under the aspects which are important in their simulation and implementation. From the results achieved, one can determine in what applications the use of rational approximations would be unproblematic and in what applications it would lead to fallacious results. In order to clarify this point,...

    Abstract
Characteristics and way of behavior of attacks and infiltrators on computer networks are usually very difficult and need an expert. In addition; the advancement of computer networks, the number of attacks and infiltrations is also increasing. In fact, the knowledge coming from expert will lose its value over time and must be updated and made available to the system and this makes the need for expert person always felt. In machine learning techniques, knowledge is extracted from the data itself which has diminished the role of the expert. Various methods used to detect intrusions, such as statistical models, safe system approach, neural networks, etc., all weaken the fact that it uses all the...
