    Abstract
Due to the wide range of applications of metal/graphene-based plasmonic metasurfaces (sensors, absorbers, polarizers), it has become essential to provide an analytical method for modeling these structures. An analytical solution simplified into a circuit model, in addition to greatly reducing the simulation time, can become an essential tool for designing and predicting the behaviors of these structures. This paper presents a high-precision equivalent circuit model to study these structures in one-dimensional and two-dimensional periodic arrays. In the developed model, metallic patches similar to graphene patches are modeled as surface conductivity and with the help of current modes induced...

Design guidelines for a tunable SOI based optical isolator in a partially time-modulated ring resonator

    Abstract
In this paper, we present the design guidelines for a tunable optical isolator in an SOI-based ring resonator with two small time-modulated regions. By considering a physical model, the proper geometrical and modulation parameters are designed, based on a standard CMOS foundry process. The effect of the variation of the key parameters on the performance of the isolator is explained by two counter-acting mechanisms, namely the separation between the resonance frequencies of counter-rotating modes and energy transfer to the side harmonic. We show that there is a trade-off between these parameters to obtain maximum isolation. Consequently, by applying the quadrature phase difference one can...

A closed-form transfer function for sample and hold master slave sampling filter

    Abstract
A switched capacitor circuit frequently appears in literature in form of sample and hold or master-slave sampling filter. We call this block Sample and Hold Master-Slave Sampling Filter (SH-MSSF). Considering the time varying nature of this circuit it is difficult to predict its behavior, though it looks like a very simple circuit. So there exists no formula describing its function in all of its applications. In this brief, we present a closed-form transfer function, explaining the operation of SH-MSSF, based on state-space analysis. Then by interpolating an infinite number of such transfer functions a continuous-time formula is derived that can exactly model the behavior of this (Linear...

    TherMa-MiCs: Thermal-Aware scheduling for fault-tolerant mixed-criticality systems

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems ; Volume 33, Issue 7 , 2022 , Pages 1678-1694 ; 10459219 (ISSN) Safari, S ; Khdr, H ; Gohari Nazari, P ; Ansari, M ; Hessabi, S ; Henkel, J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Multicore platforms are becoming the dominant trend in designing Mixed-Criticality Systems (MCSs), which integrate applications of different levels of criticality into the same platform. A well-known MCS is the dual-criticality system that is composed of low-criticality and high-criticality tasks. The availability of multiple cores on a single chip provides opportunities to employ fault-Tolerant techniques, such as N-Modular Redundancy (NMR), to ensure the reliability of MCSs. However, applying fault-Tolerant techniques will increase the power consumption on the chip, and thereby on-chip temperatures might increase beyond safe limits. To prevent thermal emergencies, urgent countermeasures,...

Nanoplasma-Based millimeter-wave modulators on a single metal layer

    , Article IEEE Electron Device Letters ; Volume 43, Issue 8 , 2022 , Pages 1355-1358 ; 07413106 (ISSN) Samizadeh Nikoo, M ; Dilmaghanian, M. O ; Farzaneh, F ; Matioli, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Fundamental constraints imposing power-frequency trade-offs in conventional electronics have stimulated research on alternative technologies for millimeter-wave and sub-millimeter-wave applications. In this work, we use the picosecond threshold firing of nanoplasma switches to demonstrate on-chip millimeter-wave modulators that rely only on a single metal layer. We show amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation with self-synthesized carrier frequencies up to 66 GHz (limited by the bandwidth of our experimental setup), with output powers up to 30 dBm. These all-metal nanoplasma modulators are low cost, and generally compatible with different platforms, from CMOS and III-V compounds to flexible...

Stability analysis of the Euler-Bernoulli beam with multi-delay controller

    , Article Control Theory and Technology ; Volume 20, Issue 3 , 2022 , Pages 338-348 ; 20956983 (ISSN) Jalili Rahmtati, A ; Xu, G ; Effati, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the stabilization of an Euler-Bernoulli beam with time delays in the boundary controller. The boundary velocity feedback law is applied to obtain the closed-loop system. It is shown that this system generates a C-semigroup of linear operators. Moreover, the stability of the closed-loop system is discussed for different values of the controller constants and time delays via using spectral analysis and a suitable Lyapunov function. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to South China University of Technology and Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences

    Abstract
HATS-18 b is a transiting planet with a large mass and a short orbital period, and is one of the best candidates for the detection of orbital decay induced by tidal effects. We present extensive photometry of HATS-18 from which we measure 27 times of mid-transit. Two further transit times were measured from data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and three more taken from the literature. The transit timings were fitted with linear and quadratic ephemerides and an upper limit on orbital decay was determined. This corresponds to a lower limit on the modified stellar tidal quality factor of $Q_star ^{, prime } gt 10^{5.11 pm 0.04}$. This is at the cusp of constraining the...

Interference alignment for the k-user MIMO interference channel

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; Volume 68, Issue 3 , 2022 , Pages 1401-1411 ; 00189448 (ISSN) Ghasemi, A ; Motahari, A. S ; Khandani, A. K ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2022
    Abstract
We consider the K-user Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel with M antennas at each transmitter and N antennas at each receiver. It is assumed that channel coefficients are constant real numbers and are available at all transmitters and at all receivers. The main objective of this paper is to characterize the number of Degrees of Freedom (DoF) of this channel. Using the real interference alignment technique introduced in Motahari et al., 2014, we show that MN M+N K degrees of freedom can be achieved for almost all channel realizations. Also, a new upper-bound on the DoF of this channel is provided. This upper-bound coincides with our achievable DoF for K K u...

Voltage balancing of series IGBTs in short-circuit conditions

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; Volume 37, Issue 5 , 2022 , Pages 5675-5686 ; 08858993 (ISSN) Zarghani, M ; Peyghami, S ; Iannuzzo, F ; Blaabjerg, F ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This article proposes a scheme for balancing the voltage of series-connected insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), which is also very effective under short-circuit conditions. An optimized clamp-mode snubber is proposed, including an active-driver to balance the currents of the IGBTs during short-circuit, which in turn allows for a considerable reduction of the snubber capacitance. The approach is proven to be effective under short-circuit conditions by a maximum of 55 V voltage increment and a negligible difference in the current values. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through simulations in PSPICE software and experimental tests performed at 2 kV. ©...

Generalized state-plane analysis of bidirectional CLLC resonant converter

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; Volume 37, Issue 5 , 2022 , Pages 5773-5785 ; 08858993 (ISSN) Rezayati, M ; Tahami, F ; Schanen, J. L ; Sarrazin, B ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2022
    Abstract
The CLLC resonant converter is a promising candidate for high efficient, bidirectional power transfer applications, such as vehicle-to-grid on-board charger and hybrid vehicle dc-dc converter. Nevertheless, the analysis of CLLC still remains challenging because of its complex multiresonant nature and several storage elements. In this article, a circuit analysis method based on change of variables is presented that maps the state-space equations into two decoupled sets of equations. The analyses are carried out in two state-plane coordinate systems, then the results are mapped onto the original region. The proposed method is then used to thoroughly analyze the CLLC resonant converter...

    Abstract
This paper compares the dynamic and static models of a Lithium-ion battery pack with its electrochemical model as energy storage of an electric vehicle according to the environmental protection agency drive cycles. The dynamic model or the RC equivalent circuit includes a voltage source and double parallel resistor and capacitor networks which are connected in series. The static model includes a voltage source and resistors. Given drive cycles, these models are compared in terms of the battery voltage, state-of-charge, and power loss in an electric vehicle in MapleSim software. Although the state-of-charge and power loss of both models are identical to each other, actually the terminal...

Agent-based time delay margin in consensus of multi-agent systems by an event-triggered control method: Concept and computation

    Abstract
This paper deals with defining the concept of agent-based time delay margin and computing its value in multi-agent systems controlled by event-triggered based controllers. The agent-based time delay margin specifying the time delay tolerance of each agent for ensuring consensus in event-triggered controlled multi-agent systems can be considered as complementary for the concept of (network) time delay margin, which has been previously introduced in some literature. In this paper, an event-triggered control method for achieving consensus in multi-agent systems with time delay is considered. It is shown that the Zeno behavior is excluded by applying this method. Then, in a multi-agent system...

    Abstract
This letter deals with a novel variant of antithetic integral feedback controller (AIFC) motifs which can feature robust perfect adaptation, a pervasive (desired) ability in natural (synthetic) biomolecular circuits, when coupled with a wide class of process networks to be regulated. Using the separation of time-scales in the proposed kind of AIFC, here we find a reduced-order controller that captures the governing slow part of the original solutions under suitable assumptions. Inspired by Rössler systems, we then make use of such a simpler controller to show that the antithetic circuit can exhibit chaotic behaviors with strange attractors, where the bifurcation from a homeostatic state to...

Evaluation of Aspergillus niger and Penicillium simplicissimum for their ability to leach Zn–Ni–Cu from waste mobile phone printed circuit boards

    , Article Journal of Material Cycles and Waste Management ; Volume 24, Issue 1 , 2022 , Pages 83-96 ; 14384957 (ISSN) Arshadi, M ; Esmaeili, A ; Yaghmaei, S ; Arab, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Japan  2022
    Abstract
In this research, Zn, Ni, and Cu recovery from mobile phone printed circuit boards was investigated. The initial pH and pulp density using Aspergillus niger or Penicillium simplicissimum fungi were optimized to improve the recovery of Zn, Ni, and Cu using a central composite design. Fungi were able to recover 97% of Cu. Often for Ni recovery, A. niger was more effective, but in low pulp densities and low pH, P. simplicissimum was preferred. For recovery of Zn, A. niger is more appropriate at pH lower than 6, but P. simplicissimum outperforms at pH higher than 6. Under the optimum conditions (pulp density of 4 gL−1 and initial pH 10), the respective recovery of Cu, Ni, and Zn was determined...

    Abstract
A short lifespan and increased consumption patterns make e-waste the world's fastest-growing waste stream. Computers are one of the most significant parts of e-waste. Recycling of e-waste has been introduced as the main solution to deal with environmental problems and to save natural mines. This research aims to investigate the bioleaching of Cu, Ni, and Al from computer printed circuit boards (CPCBs) using Penicillium simplicissimum. The adaptation phase began at 1 g/l CPCBs powder with 107 spores and final pulp density was reached at 30 g/l. The most effective parameters including pulp density, initial pH, and the sucrose concentration were optimized to achieve maximum simultaneous...

Proposal of a fault-tolerance technique for 1-ph open circuit fault in resolvers

    , Article IEEE Sensors Journal ; Volume 21, Issue 14 , 2021 , Pages 15987-15992 ; 1530437X (ISSN) Bahari, M ; Tootoonchian, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Due to their cost-effective manufacturing and robust structure, an electromagnetic sensor called resolver is being applied in a wide range of applications, especially in those which high reliability is particularly essential. Since resolvers are usually chosen as position detector units in harsh environments, their chronic exposure to high temperature and mechanical shocks is unpreventable and accordingly, performance failure as a result of output signal winding open circuit fault (OCF) is inevitable. In this paper, a new technique is proposed to keep the performance of the resolver within an acceptable range of position error while one of the output signals (SIN/COS) is inaccessible. To...

    Abstract
Perovskite solar cells suffer from various instabilities on all time scales. Some of them are driven by light, in particular when employing compounds with mixed halides. Such light soaking effects have been observed to result in performance changes of solar-cell devices. They have also been spectroscopically investigated in detail on films, where the formation of a low-gap iodine-rich phase, seen as a red shift of the PL, has been found to be responsible for a reduced open-circuit voltage. However, studies synchronously examining device performance and its relation to spectroscopy data are scarce. Here, we perform an in operando study, where we investigate the changes of open-circuit voltage...

    Abstract
The design of a novel Continuous Fractional-Order Nonsingular Terminal Sliding Mode controller is the focus of this study. Time Delay Estimation technique is incorporated into the controller. The proposed method is responsible for controlling the human knee joint neuromusculoskeletal model via Functional Electrical Stimulation. A second-order nonlinear model with time-varying coefficients is used for characterizing the FES-stimulated neuromusculoskeletal model. The presence of time-varying coefficients often complicates precise control of knee joint through FES and impairs the performance of conventional methods. To this end, the TDECFONTSM has been proposed consisting of three components, a...

Efficient closed-form solution for 3-d hybrid localization in multistatic radars

    Abstract
In this article, an algebraic solution for localizing a moving target using a nonstationary multistatic radar system is proposed. By utilizing the quadruple hybrid measurement set, which consists of time delay, Doppler shift, angle of arrival, and angle rate measurements, the proposed method can estimate the target position and velocity vectors via a simple one-stage weighted least squares estimator without the need for introduction of the nuisance parameters, which enables us to locate the target with the minimum number of antennas. The proposed estimator takes the uncertainty concerned with the position and velocity of the antennas in its design. The proposed estimator is shown to be...
