, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kia, Mohsen (Author) ; Hosseini, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Economic aspects of power systems in their new structures, have been the subject of most of new publications in the area of electrical engineering after the era of restructuring. Nowadays, the power generation business is totally market driven in most of countries all around the world and the system operators are responsible for maintaining a high level of system security as well as the economic operation of the power systems. The development of wind power generation has rapidly progressed over the last decade. With the advancement in wind turbine technology, wind energy has become competitive with other fuel-based resources. The fluctuation of wind, however, makes it difficult to optimize the...

Management of Different Levels of Frequency Control Reserve Ancillary Services

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taghizadeh Torghabeh, Adel (Author) ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In most countries Frequency control services as one of the Ancillary services are presented in market scheme. Frequency control are used in different levels to balance generation and demand. Each reserve levels is implemented with specific characteristics and rules. Clearance of energy and one control reserve has some drawbacks so in this thesis we try to clear energy and different reserve levels simultaneously. Each reserve level is determined with special criteria. This criterion in primary reserve is frequency deviation restriction and unit commitment risk in territory reserve that is determined by system operator. In this thesis these two criteria are formulated in linear form and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sahebi, Mir Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ehsan , Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In restructured power system, the Independent System Operator (ISO) implements Security Constraint Unit Commitment (SCUC) for clearing of day-ahead market. In this project, SCUC is also uses for simultaneous clearing of energy and reserve market. Spinning reserve and of generating units and Interruptible Loads (IL) are considered as system operating reserves in the proposed model. Some of IL usage restrictions such as maximum load curtailed, maximum curtailment hour in a day, maximum length of each curtailment and etc is also considered. One of these constraints is interruption time (the time between ISO’s request and IL’s Answer) which is very difficult to formulate. Expected Energy Not...

Optimizing Transmisson from Distant Wind Farms

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdollahi Mansourkhani, Hamid Reza (Author) ; Hosseini, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wind power is site dependent and is by nature partially dispatchable. Furthermore, good wind sites are far from grid. Due to these problems, and along with the existing limitations in the transmission networks, a comprehensive analysis over an extended time is needed to properly explore all potential wind sites for wind capacity allocation. This problem is computationally expensive and decomposition methods are required to break down this problem. Here Benders decomposition approach is used, which is a popular technique for solving large-scale problems, to decompose the original problem into a master and a subproblem. The master problem is a linear problem, which allocates wind capacity to...

Allocation of Operating Reserve to Demand Response Resources in Composite System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Parvania, Masoud (Author) ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Considerable developments in demand-side real-time telemetry systems allow ISOs to use demand-side provided reserves in ancillary service markets. Presently, many ISOs designed programs to utilize the reserve provided by demand response resources in their market, and deploy them in emergency conditions. These programs are called ancillary service demand response (ASDR) programs. This thesis presents a stochastic programming model to schedule reserve provided by demand response resources in load buses of system. The demand-side reserve resources are modeled by demand response providers (DRP) which have the responsibility of aggregating and managing responses of customers. The reserve provided...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nik Payam, Hossein (Author) ; Rafiee, Majid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The everyday increasing electricity consumption of household and industrial sectors across the world, and also the limited generation capacity and fuel supplies has led electricity companies, whether in private or government sectors, to focus deliberately on power generation planning, its costs, risks and constraints Because of many reasons including high efficiency, low cost of capital investment, expeditious permitting, and operation flexibility of gas-fired generating units, electricity companies prefer them to old ones like coal-fired or oil-fired generating units. Thus natural gas has gained a significant share in the portfolio of electricity generation fuel resources, and it is...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Badakhshan, Sobhan (Author) ; Ehsan, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Natural gas power plant installed in power system as rapid start unit. In the recent decades, with increasing in the number of gas generating units in the world, consideration of natural gas transmission network in optimal solution of security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) become a non-negligible problem. The gas transmission grid constraints integrated into the scheduling of thermal units in the proposed model for minimizes power system operating cost. In a power plant transmission of natural gas to power plant is very important because congestion in natural gas pipeline increases. This model could consider natural gas storage tank in gas transmission network as decision variable....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abedini Duki, Esmaeil (Author) ; Hosseini, Sayyed Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Providing more choices to customers for determining the cost of their required reliability levels is one of the most important targets of restructured power system. Centralized management of reliability in Vertically Integrated Utility (VIU) applying the same policies to different customers is replaced with decentralized management allowing customers to participate in reliability management based on their required reliability levels. In this thesis, impact of emergency demand response programs, interruptible load contract and wind farms on the long-term security constrained unit commitment has been studied. Random outages of generators and transmission lines, load forecast inaccuracies as...

Unit commitment with probabilistic spinning reserve and interruptible load considerations

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Volume 24, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 388-397 ; 08858950 (ISSN) Aminifar, F ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
This paper demonstrates how a probabilistic criterion could be explicitly integrated in the unit commitment (UC) formulation. Both spinning reserve and interruptible load are taken into account as the operating reserve facilities. Incorporating the interruption notice time of interruptible load involves some complexities in the evaluation procedure and problem formulation which is considered in this paper. The expected energy not supplied (EENS) is considered as a probabilistic criterion and a new method is proposed to calculate this index in the presence of interruptible load. The reliability-constrained unit commitment (RCUC) problem is formulated based on the mixed-integer programming...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new approach based on hybrid Particle Swarm-Based- Simulated Annealing Optimization (PSO-B-SA) for solving thermal unit commitment (UC) problems is proposed. The PSO-B-SA presented in this paper solves the two sub-problems simultaneously and independently; unit-scheduled problem that determines on/off status of units and the economic dispatch problem for production amount of generating units. Problem formulation of UC is defined as minimization of total objective function while satisfying all the associated constraints such as minimum up and down time, production limits and the required demand and spinning reserve. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can...

    Abstract
PV generation variability and uncertainty significantly influence operation of the power systems with high penetration of PV sources. The potential impact of distributed PV generation on ramp rate requirements in the IEEE 24-bus system is evaluated in this paper. PV generation and load are, here, probabilistically modeled using actual data and curve fitting approach. Probabilistic unit commitment (UC) based on unit de-commitment method combined with two point estimate method (2-PEM) is used to determine the ramp rate required to compensate for the PV power fluctuations. The proposed method considers stochastic factors and their effects on the dispatch results. Two scenarios are studied to...

    Abstract
Integration of wind power generation creates new concerns for operation engineers in a power system. Unlike conventional power generation sources, wind power generators supply intermittent power due to uncertainty in parameters of wind such as its velocity. This paper presents probabilistic model for load and wind power uncertainty which can be used in operation planning (with durations up to one or two years). A stochastic model is proposed to simulate the status of units that are directly affected by the load and wind power generation uncertainties. This paper develops a solution method for generation scheduling of power system, while taking into account the stochastic behavior of the load...

    Abstract
Secure and reliable operation is one of the main challenges in restructured power systems. Wind energy has been gaining increasing global attention as a clean and economic energy source, despite the operational challenges its intermittency brings. In this study, we present a formulation for electricity and reserve market clearance in the presence of wind farms. Uncertainties associated with generation and line outages are modeled as different system scenarios. The formulation incorporates the cost of different scenarios in a two-stage short-term (24-hours) clearing process, also considering different types of reserve. The model is then linearized in order to be compatible with standard...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a short-term stochastic SCUC model that simultaneously schedules generating units' energy and spinning reserve in presence of wind energy. It should be noted that system uncertainties, wind farm output uncertainties and power generators and lines outages are also considered in optimization process. The proposed stochastic SCUC model is formulated as a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer programming model. Performance of the proposed formulation is proved through test systems and the results are also presented

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 56 , March , 2014 , Pages 175-184 ; ISSN: 01420615 Sahebi, M. M. R ; Hosseini, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Increasing the social welfare and achieving real competitive markets are the main purposes of consumers participation in electricity markets. Hence, Demand Response Programs (DRPs) have been designed to consider the consumers participation. One of these programs named Emergency Demand Response Program (EDRP) is based on consumers' responses to high electricity prices and to the incentives that are paid by Independent System Operators (ISOs) in the critical hours. In this paper, a model has been proposed for EDRP participation in the Stochastic Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) program. Both the spinning reserve and the demand side reserve, which is modeled as EDRP, are taken into...

    Abstract
Unit Commitment is the optimization process for minimizing the total cost of real power generation meeting the generating units and the system constraints. With the restructuring in power systems, the matter of great concern is the fuel cost and consequently electricity price increase in some hours of the day. Accordingly, the optimum performance of Demand Side Management (DSM) has been gaining great attention recently. In this paper, the effect of the optimum performance of Emergency Demand Response Program (EDRP) on the cost of the unit commitment problem considering the line flow constrains is scrutinized. Due to the fact that the simultaneous adoption of the unit commitment and demand...

    Abstract
The interdependencies of power systems and natural gas networks have increased due to the additional installations of more environmental-friendly and fast-ramping natural gas power plants. The natural gas transmission network constraints and the use of natural gas for other types of loads can affect the delivery of natural gas to generation units. These interdependencies will affect the power system security and economics in day-ahead and real-time operations. Hence, it is imperative to analyze the impact of natural gas network constraints on the security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) problem. In particular, it is important to include natural gas and electricity network transients in...

    Abstract
There is a global tendency towards using Distributed Generation (DG) and renewable energy resources. Considering low utilization cost and low undesirable environmental effects, wind farms have become a considerable resource for producing electrical energy in many countries. Since Wind farms are not programmable and their power output which depends on weather and wind speed is uncertain, they create problems for utilizing electricity system. There are different methods for preserving system stability against the uncertainty of wind power plants. Optimal utilization of pumped storage and gas resources is one of the approaches for reducing production risk of wind farms. In this paper, it is...

    Abstract
The forecast errors for distributed energy resources (DERs) and hourly demands have contributed to power system uncertainties and additional risks in the day-ahead scheduling of electricity markets. In this paper, a risk-based approach is introduced to determine the stochastic solution of network-constrained unit commitment (NCUC) when additional uncertainties are embedded in the power system scheduling. The historical power market transaction data are used to model nodal injection uncertainties and reserve capacity requirements are considered to assess the solution of the risk-based NCUC. The proposed NCUC problem is formulated as a single-stage second order cone program which is a convex...
