Super-hydrophilic characteristic of thermochemically prepared CdS nanocrystals

    , Article Physica E: Low-Dimensional Systems and Nanostructures ; Vol. 58 , April , 2014 , pp. 146-152 ; ISSN: 13869477 Marandi, M ; Taghavinia, N ; Babaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
CdS nanocrystals were thermochemically (thermally activated) synthesized thorough the reaction between CdSO4 and Na2S 2O3 in an aqueous solution. Thioglycolic Acid (TGA) was used as the capping agent and catalyst of the reaction. The method was based on heat activated dissociation of Na2S2O3 and controllable release of S and free electrons in the solution. CdS NCs were formed by heating the sample solution at 96 C for 1 h. The results of optical spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated round shape NCs with sizes about 3.0 nm. The nanocrystals were also luminescent and represented a broad emission with a peak located at 515 nm and FWHM of 160 nm. Several samples were...

    Abstract
A cost-effective design of reusable enzyme-functionalized particles with better catalytic activity is of great scientific interest due to their applications in a wide range of catalytic reactions in several industrial processes. In this work, a systematic approach for preparing amine-functionalized magnetic nanocomposite particles through the surface modification of core/shell type Fe3O4 cluster@SiO2 particles by the small molecules of 3-(2-aminoethyl)aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AAS) or the large molecules of polyethyleneimine (PEI) with two different molecular weights, as the support materials for enzyme immobilization, has been demonstrated. The functional...

    Abstract
The aggregation of an amyloid protein, α-synuclein (α-Syn), has been suggested as a potential cause of Parkinson's and several other neurodegenerative diseases. To explore the possibility of using nanoparticle-based therapeutic agents for the treatment of such diseases, we investigated the influence of surface chemistry and concentration of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) on the fibrillation of recombinant human α-Syn protein in the present work. Bare MSNPs as well as MSNPs of different surface functionalities, including 3-(2-aminoethyl amino) propyltrimethoxysilane (AAS), succinic anhydride (carboxyl), and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were prepared and characterized by electron...

    Abstract
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are increasingly used in medical applications, such as targeting delivery and imaging. In the future, patients are more likely to be exposed to pharmaceutical products containing such particles. The study of toxicity of SPIONs has become of great importance in recent years, although the published data in this arena is limited. The aim of the present work is to investigate the cytotoxicity of SPIONs and the effect of the particles on the cell medium components. For this purpose, uncoated and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coated SPIONs with narrow size distribution were synthesized via a well-known coprecipitation method. The mouse fibroblast cell...

    Abstract
A facile approach for the preparation of core-shell structured poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-coated Fe3O4 cluster@SiO2 nanocomposite particles as the support materials for the lipase immobilization is reported. Low- or high-molecular-weight (1800 and 100 000, respectively) PAA molecules were covalently attached onto the surface of amine-functionalized magnetic silica nanoacomposite particles. The successful preparation of particles were verified by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), zeta potential measurement, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. Once lipase is covalently...

Streaming potential measurement to quantify wetting state of rocks for water based EOR, inhouse novel setup experience

    , Article IOR NORWAY 2017 - 19th European Symposium on Improved Oil Recovery: Sustainable IOR in a Low Oil Price World, 24 April 2017 through 27 April 2017 ; 2017 ; 9789462822092 (ISBN) Rahbar, M ; Jafarlou, A ; Nejadali, M ; Esmaeili, S ; Pahlavanzadeh, H ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The wetting condition of the reservoir rock is the key to the success of any EOR technique and the ultimate oil recovery. Wettability is dictated by the surface chemistry related to the interactions between the fluids and the rock surface which determines the stability of the water film between the rock and the oil phase. Streaming potential measurement is one of the electrokinetic techniques used to determine the average zeta potential of porous rock which can provide reliable information on fluid-rock interaction and wettability state of the rock surface. Streaming potential measurement has recently been introduced in the oil reservoirs applications and there are still significant...

    Abstract
In the present study, the feasibility of electrospun polyethersolfone (PES) nanofibrous membrane as the solid substrate for microfluidic based immunoassays to enhance the density of immobilized antibody on the surface of membrane was assessed. Conversely, the efficacy of antibody immobilization was compared by two different strategies as 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide (EDC)/N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) coupling chemistry and hydrophobic interaction. Compared to conventional immunoassays carried out in plates or gels, microfluidic based immunoassays grant a lot of advantages such as a consumption of little samples and reagents, shorter analysis time, and higher efficiency....

    Abstract
Despite the fact that hydrophobic nanosilica can improve the stability of water/oil emulsion, there exist controversies pertaining to its influence on oil-based drilling fluid rheological behavior and the subsequent formation damage. The present study addresses the above using a surface modified nanosilica, where the particles were functionalized with different silane-based groups to alter their hydrophilicity: 3-glycidoxypropyl-triethoxy silane (GPTS) and combined GPTS and propyl silane (PGPTS). The NPs were characterized through FTIR analysis, particle size, and zeta-potential measurements followed by flow behavior experiments, core-scale mud flow tests, Computed Tomography (CT) scanning...

    Abstract
In the present work, a series of nanohybrids based on UiO-66 as a physicochemical stable metal-organic framework (MOF) and different amounts of thermally oxidized nanodiamond (OND) (0.5–10 wt%) were synthesized and used as adsorbents for anionic (methyl red, MR, and methyl orange, MO) and cationic (malachite green, MG, and methylene blue, MB) dyes from contaminated water in single and binary dye solutions. The single adsorbents and their nanohybrids were characterized by FESEM, FTIR, XRD,TGA, BET, and zeta potential measurements. The experimental adsorption results displayed that the synthesized nanohybrids presented higher adsorption capacity for anionic dyes compared to cationic dyes in...

    Abstract
Engineered water (EW) flooding is one of the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques in carbonate reservoirs. In this method, the wettability of reservoir rock is altered by controlling the amount of various ions in the injected brine. The thermodynamics of wettability is related to the surface interactions and stability of water film on a rock surface. It can be identified by calculating disjoining pressure isotherms. In this study, core flooding tests, contact angle and zeta potential measurements along with the disjoining pressure isotherm calculation by the DLVO theory were used to investigate the wettability alteration of dolomite rock. Four brines include reservoir formation water...
