Investigation of Mechanical Properties of Graphene

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rasuli, Reza (Author) ; Iraji Zad, Azam (Supervisor) ; Rafii-tabar, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The unique properties of graphene due to the presence of massless Dirac fermions, high surface to volume ratio, high crystal quality in 2D, and high mechanical strength, recommend it as a promising material for technologies such as nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) and nanosensors. Use of graphene in nanodevices is accompanied by induced strains and stresses. Therefore it is important to study the mechanical properties of graphene. In present thesis, we synthesized graphene using both mechanical cleavage of graphite and chemical method. In the chemical method graphene oxide is prepared by oxidation and exfoliation of graphite. The graphene oxide sheets were reduced to prepare graphene...

Strain Effect on the CO & H2 Adsorption Upon Graphene

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bagheri, Beytolhoda (Author) ; Irajizad, Azam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, adsorption of Carbon monoxide and Hydrogen on graphene, by DFT calculation has been studied. Also effect of strain on some electrical properties, such as band structure, electrical conductivity and Density of states, for pristine graphene and adsorption CO and H2 on it has been probed. This results show that with strain up to 12% on pristine graphene , we won’t have any band gap on Fermi surface and energy adsorption for Carbon monoxide on strained graphene (up 12%) increase up 400 per cent. Also for strained graphene (12%) on Carbon monoxide adsorption condition we will have energy band gap almost a few electron volt on Fermi surface. In general this results express...

Strain and Stress Measurement by Image Processing Technique

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Lak, Mehdi (Author) ; Assempour, Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study presents an image processing technique for automatic strain and stress measurement in sheet metals. In order to measure the strain automatically, the sheet blank is electrochemically etched to create circular and rectangular grids. After press forming of the sheet, circular grids are deformed into elliptical grids and rectangular grids are deformed into quadrilateral grids. Different photos are captured for using in image processing technique. These photos are taken in different positions. Finally strain can be measured by processing these photos and the stress is obtained by using Levy-Mises flow rule. In this study, three methods of image processing technique are simultaneously...

Simulation of the Blood Flow in a Stenotic Left Coronary Bifurcation to Study the Effects on the Endothelial Cells

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jahromi, Reza (Author) ; Saeedi, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Morphology and alignment of endothelial cells (ECs) have great influence on plaque formation. These alignments are based on the cyclic strains and wall shear stress (WSS) on the arterial wall. In the present study, cyclic strains and WSS are investigated to predict the secondary plaque locations downstream of the primary stenosis. Therefore, left coronary artery (LCA) with its branches to left anterior descending (LAD) and left circumflex (LCX) are 3D located on a virtual sphere to consider the cardiac motion. Stenoses are placed at the beginning of the bifurcation with varying degrees from 40% to 70% based on diameter reduction. Healthy coronary is also constructed to compare with those of...

Numerical Evaluation of Capability of Spectral Analysis Method for Laminar Damage Detection in Structures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zamani, Reza (Author) ; Mohtatasham Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor) ; Rafiee Dehkhareghani, Reza ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
    Abstract
Damage detection and rehabiltation is one of the most economical methods of increasing safety and service life of the structures. In this research, a wave-based methodology is introduced for laminar damage location in single axial members and combined axial-flexural members within a structure. Laminar damage is a kind of local damage in which the cross section area of a member decreases within a specific length. In the proposed wave-based methodology, a structure with a laminar damage is analyzed using a Finite Element (FE) software under a high frequency loading, and the strain values in specific points of the structure is collected. Thereafter, using the wave propagation theories and the...

Using Image Processing Technique for Measuring Strain and Stress in Complex Sheet Metals

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Koohpayeh, Ali (Author) ; Asempour, Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project, by using the image processing method, the strain rate in the deformed sheets is measured, and then compared with experimental results. Scratches are first drawn on the surface of the sheet. After the deformation, photographs of the surface are taken, by using image processing method as well as the use of special techniques, the strain is obtained fast with accurately. By determining the strain, tension will also be achieved through Levy Mises relations. In this project, by using this method, the strain is calculated on surfaces with simple geometry, such as sphere (spherical surface of the sheet in the FLD test), as well as surfaces whose surface geometry is unknown and...

Studying the Dynamics Behavior of the Partially Saturated Sand under Different Hydro-mechanical Loading with Resonant Column- torsional Shear and Bender Elements Apparatuses

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Toomani, Pooria (Author) ; Khosravi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Considering the importance of studying dynamic characteristics of soils in the analysis of wave propagation and the design of earth constructions or soil-related structures, as well as the role of Resonant Column-Torsional Shear in determining the dynamic parameters, including shear modulus, damping ratio and wave velocity in soil, this device was designed and developed in this research. The apparatus developed is able to conduct both resonant column and torsional shear tests and also measure dynamic parameters in large ranges of strain. The unsaturated pressure panel built alongside this device and the especial design of the device components have made the above-mentioned experiments...

Numerical Modeling of Stress Applied on Stuck Pipe during Drilling and Completion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pourzeinolabedin, Arman (Author) ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Zivar, Davood (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
There is many operational problems in the drilling industry. One of these basic problems is stuck pipe. This problem occurs with different intensities in different formations due to particles falling into the well, pressure difference in the formation and drilling mud and instability of the wellbore and creates conditions in which the drilling string can neither rotate nor move, so all Drilling operations are stopped so that according to studies, pipe sticking is one of the most important reasons for stopping drilling operations. This stop imposes millions of dollars of operational damage on oil services companies annually. Therefore, identifying and prediction of stuck pipe as a major...

Investigating the Effect Strain Rate on the Poisson’s Ratio of Auxetic Polyurethane Foams

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Behbahani, Ali (Author) ; Nourani, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Auxetic materials have a negative Poisson ratio (NPR), which is their most distinguishable characteristic as compared to regular materials. Test specimens were made of conventional polyurethane (PU) foams according to ASTM ; then, with a thermo-mechanical process, the foam was converted to auxetic PU foam. The reproducibility of specimens' fabrication was checked with CoV= for the final foam thickness. With regard to the fact that changing loading conditions can vary Poisson's ratio, in this study, the variations occurred in Poisson's ratio due to changing loading conditions are investigated. The applied strain and strain rate were altered in experiments and statistical analysis was...
