Investigation on the Effect of Earthquake loads on Segmental Lining in Tunnel

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khaleghi, Hooman (Author) ; Sadaghiani, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recently, considerable efforts have been devoted to evaluation of seismic dynamic response of a circular tunnel. Conventional approaches have considered integral liners embedded in an elastic medium. In this study, we model a circular tunnel driven by TMB in homogeneous soil. Tunnel lining with 6 pieces of segments is analyzed by software in three dimensions. The results demonstrate that the stiffness difference between the segment and joints can enhance the internal forces of the segment significantly, which is crucial for the design of segments. The design of tunnel segment joints and joints between tunnels and portal structures are investigated by comparing with different parameters of...

Study on the Behavior of Under Ground Intersection Subjected to Earthquake Loads

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arami, Abbasali (Author) ; Sadaghiani, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the popular choice of using underground structures and tunnel in big cities and with significant damage in recent large earthquake; therefore more attention is given to the behavior of the underground structure in seismic area. The purpose of this thesis is to present the Soil-Tunnel-Structure Interaction analysis performed for different dynamic load condition. Therefore we modeled a 3D intersection part of two different tunnels in homogeneous soil by ABAQUS software. The soil and concrete structure of tunnel is modeled by three dimensional solid finite elements and the boundary of soil is modeled by three dimensional infinite elements with 8 nodes. The results demonstrate the geostatic...

Interaction Between Tunnel and Adjacent Structures Using a Two Dimensional Finite Element Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nematiomabad, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Sadaghiani, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This research concerns a study of the interaction between tunneling and adjacent structures. Analysis is performed using a full two-dimensional finite element model, which takes into consideration the presence of adjacent structure with regard to distance to tunnel and diameter of tunnel during construction of the tunnel. The soil behavior is assumed to be governed by an elastic perfectly-plastic constitutive relation based on Mohr-Coulomb criterion with a non-associated flow rule. The research is composed of two parts. However, compatibility of each method with beam and solid continuum element models in two dimensional finite element (FE) analysis was investigated. The first part describes...

Simulation of Fire in Tunnels Using Fire Dynamics Simulator Code (FDS)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahsavan, Martia (Author) ; Farhanieh, Bijan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Designing of an efficient emergency ventilation system is one of the main approaches to prevent the perilous fire in tunnel phenomenon. For this purpose, firstly, fire behavior and its heat release rate should be investigated. Knowing about temperature distribution and smoke movement is the second step. One of the most considerable factors in smoke control is critical velocity. It means the minimum velocity to prevent backlayering flow. If longitudinal ventilation velocity were less than this amount, smoke and hot gases originated from the fire can enter the upstream zone. This may cause lack of oxygen and decrease visibility for the passengers when they are escaping from the fire field. In...

Assessment of Fault Effect on Tunnel Stability Under Seismic Load by UDEC Software (Case Study: Shibli Tunnel)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zameni, Shima (Author) ; Sadaghiani, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dynamic design of underground structures is complicated and difficult. Although underground structures are less vulnerable than surface structures, dynamic analysis of these structures during their design process is necessary. In this project, numerical studying of fault effect on underground structures and its dynamic responses, focusing on tunnel Shebli was conducted. Two-dimensional model utilizing UDEC software which is based on descrete elements method was used for this analysis. Time history of Manjil Earthquake using horizontal component of ground acceleration which is propagated toward earth surface was applied to models as a shear wave with respect to depth and type of rock. To...

A Model for Optimizing Railway Alignment Problem Considering Bridge and Tunnel Cost and Using Transional Curves

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghoreishi, Benyamin (Author) ; Shafahi, Yusof (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to large range searches (there are various alignments between two points) as well as the complex and non-linear cost functions and a variety of geometric constraints, the problem of optimal railway alignment is known as a difficult problem. For this reason, choosing an alignment between two points is usually done based on a limited number of alignments put forward by experts. In recent years, the study of the railway alignment optimization raised again due to the importance of optimization and introduction of various algorithms and their progress in solving various problems. It is expected that applying metaheuristic optimization algorithms, such as methods based on Swarm intelligence...

Numerical Analysis of Tunnel under Seismic Loads in Sandy Soils

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Parham (Author) ; Ahmadi, Mohammad Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research with Finite Element Method in ABAQUS, a Number of Numerical modeling has done in two-dimensions, which can be used to determic the effect of different factors on the seismic vulnerability of tunnels. Also, varios factor such as Geotechnical conditions, tunnel depth, tunnel thickness and ground water is considered in this study. One of the parameters considered in designing tunnels is the ability of the tunnel’s lining to withstand the seismic and geotechnical loads. Each section of the tunnels are designed according to the maximum stress witch created due to the earthquake. this stress’s created in tunnels can be devided in to 3 category : the axial force, the Shear force and...
