    Abstract
Antibacterial activity of tungsten oxide nanorods/microrods were studied against Escherichia coli bacteria under visible light irradiation and in dark. A two-step annealing process at temperatures up to 390 °C and 400-800 °C was applied to synthesize the tungsten oxide nanorods/microrods on tungsten foils using KOH as a catalyst. Annealing the foils at 400 °C in the presence of catalyst resulted in formation of tungsten oxide nanorods (with diameters of 50-90 nm and crystalline phase of WO3) on surface of tungsten foils. By increasing the annealing temperature up to 800 °C, tungsten oxide microrods with K2W6O19 crystalline phase were formed on the foils. The WO3 nanorods showed a strong...

    Abstract
The graphene-based materials with unique, versatile, and tunable properties have brought new opportunities for the leading edge of advanced nanobiotechnology. In this regard, the use of graphene in gene delivery applications is still at early stages. In this study, we successfully designed a new complex of carboxylated-graphene (G-COOH) with ethidium bromide (EtBr) and used it as a nanovector for efficient gene delivery into the AGS cells. G-COOH, with carboxyl functions on its surface, in the presence of EtBr, formaldehyde, and cyclohexylisocyanide were participated in Ugi four component reaction to fabricate a stable amphiphilic graphene-EtBr (AG-EtBr) composite. The coupling reaction was...

Chemical manipulation on graphene surface to tailor its unique properties and modify atomic structures is being actively pursued. Therefore, the discovery of robust and general protocols to anchor active functionality on graphene basal plane is still of great interest. Multicomponent reactions promise an enormous level of interest due to addressing both diversity and complexity in combinatorial synthesis, in which more than two starting compounds react to form a product derived from entire inputs. In this article, we present the first covalent...

Graphene oxide in generation of nanobubbles using controllable microvortices of jet flows

    , Article Carbon ; Volume 138 , 2018 , Pages 8-17 ; 00086223 (ISSN) Jannesari, M ; Akhavan, O ; Madaah Hosseini, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Spontaneous generation of nanobubbles (NBs) was developed by using a controllable platform of superfast microvortices, based on turbulent jet flows in the presence of graphene oxide (GO) sheets. Very high energy dissipation rates through discharging warm water into cold N2 aqueous solutions resulted in creation of micro/submicro-vortices. Shear stresses in these domains generated gas local supersaturations, leading to the formation of high concentration (∼109 mL−1) of stable NBs. Introducing GO sheets into the microvortex system resulted in effective manipulation of NBs by providing energetically favorable sites for prompt heterogeneous nucleation as well as stronger shear rate fluctuations....

Curcumin as a green fluorescent label to revive the fluorescence property of functionalized graphene oxide nanosheets

    , Article Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology ; Volume 45 , June , 2018 , Pages 422-427 ; 17732247 (ISSN) Akbari, E ; Akhavan, O ; Hatamie, S ; Rahighi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Editions de Sante  2018
    Abstract
In this work, graphene oxide (GO) aqueous suspensions prepared by a chemical exfoliation method showed a fluorescence peak at ∼615 nm. Photoluminescence spectroscopy determined that functionalization of the GO sheets by 3-(2-Aminoethylamino) propyltrimethoxysilane molecules significantly quench the fluorescence property of the GO sheets. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed proper functionalization of the GO sheets. Curcumin was applied as a fluorescent natural material with an emission peak at ∼550 nm wavelength for green fluorescent labeling of the functionalized-GO sheets. The curcumin-labeled functionalized-GO sheets showed an intense emission band fluorescent property with...

    2009
    Abstract
Gold-silver alloy nanoparticles with various Au concentrations in sputtered SiO2 thin films were synthesized by using RF reactive magnetron co-sputtering and then heat-treated in reducing Ar + H2 atmosphere at different temperatures. The UV-visible absorption spectra of the bimetallic systems confirmed the formation of alloy nanoparticles. The optical absorption of the Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles exhibited only one plasmon resonance absorption peak located at 450 nm between the absorption bands of pure Au and Ag nanoparticles at 400 and 520 nm, respectively, for the thin films annealed at 800 °C. The maximum absorption wavelength of the surface plasmon band showed a red shift with increasing...

    Abstract
A simple method for synthesis of NaxWO3 nanorods and nanobelts on sputtered tungsten films by using sodium in soda lime substrate as the catalyst was reported for the first time. After thermally post annealing thin films in a temperature range of 600-750 °C in N2 ambient for 80 min, crystalline NaxWO3 nanorods and nanobelts with [001] direction were formed depending on the annealing temperature. Experimental results reveal that the annealing temperature at 700 °C is the optimum temperature for the growth of sodium-doped tungsten oxide nanorods with maximum density on the surface. According to scanning electron microscopic observations, the synthesized nanorods are ∼50 nm in width and a few...

    Abstract
Multi-component nanocomposite thin films (composed of cellulose nanofiber (CNF), alginate, bioglass nanoparticles (BG NPs) and gentamicin) were prepared by using cathodic electrophoretic deposition (EPD) under different isostatic pressures of 10−2 mbar (LP), atmospheric (AP), and 5 bar (HP). According to thermal gravity analysis, larger amounts of CNF and alginate could be deposited on the surface at the AP condition in comparison with the LP and HP conditions. On the other hand, higher amounts of the BG NPs could be deposited at the LP condition as compared to the other conditions. The drug (gentamicin) loading/releasing of the samples prepared at the HP condition was found to be higher...

    Abstract
Aperiodic perforated graphene layers were synthesized and used in fabrication of optical nanocavity absorbers. Chemical vapor deposition-grown graphene (Gr) layers were exposed to oxygen plasma etching to obtain the perforated graphene (pGr). The fabricated pGr/SiO2 (68 nm)/Ag (150 nm) nanocavity could present significant higher optical absorption, especially at around 530 nm wavelength region, as compared to a benchmark Gr/SiO2 (68 nm)/Ag (150 nm) sample. The effect of pore size of the pGr layer on the absorption property of the nanocavity has been studied by both experimental and numerical methods. The dependence of the absorption property of the nanocavity on the incident angles of...

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Vol. 590 , 2014 , pp. 507-513 ; ISSN: 09258388 Zirak, M ; Akhavan, O ; Moradlou, O ; Nien, Y. T ; Moshfegh, A. Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Vertically aligned ZnO@CdS nanorod heterostructure films with various loadings of CdS nanoparticle shell were synthesized and applied in photoinactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria under visible light irradiation. While neither the bare ZnO nanorods (with band-gap energy (Eg) of ∼3.28 eV) under visible light irradiation nor the nanorod heterostructures in dark exhibited any significant antibacterial activity, the ZnO@CdS nanorod heterostructures (with Eg ∼2.5-2.6 eV) could successfully inactivate the bacteria under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, it was found that an optimum loading of the CdS shell (corresponding to the effective thickness less than ∼15 nm) is required to achieve...

    , Article Applied Surface Science ; Volume 320 , 30 November , 2014 , Pages 596-601 ; ISSN: 01694332 Mbeh, D. A ; Akhavan, O ; Javanbakht, T ; Mahmoudi, M ; Yahia, L ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) were synthesized using an oxidative unzipping of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The interactions of the GONRs with various concentrations of fetal bovine serum or human plasma serum indicated that the GONRs were functionalized substantially by the albumin originated from the two different protein sources. Then, concentration-dependent cytotoxicity of the protein-functionalized GONRs on human epithelial cells was studied. Although the GONRs with concentrations ≤50 μg/mL did not exhibit significant cytotoxicity on the cells (with the cell viability >85%), the concentration of 100 μg/mL exhibited significant cytotoxicity including prevention of cell...

Furthermore, it was found that the yield of graphene nanoplatelets in genomic DNA (gDNA) and RNA extractions from embryonic stem cells (ESCs) was also comparable to the yield of the conventional methods. The effects of the graphene nanoplatelets on...

Hyperthermia-induced protein corona improves the therapeutic effects of zinc ferrite spinel-graphene sheets against cancer

    , Article RSC Advances ; Vol. 4, issue. 107 , 2014 , p. 62557-62565 Hajipour, M. J ; Akhavan, O ; Meidanchi, A ; Laurent, S ; Mahmoudi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Superparamagnetic zinc ferrite spinel-graphene nanostructures were synthesized as potential therapeutic agents in the magnetic targeted photothermal therapy of cancer and/or drug delivery. The global temperature of the solution and the local temperature at the nanoparticle (NP) surface determine the protein corona composition/content, which in turn affects the biological effects of NPs and the corresponding physiological responses. Therefore, it is rational to hypothesize that spinel-graphene nanostructures may have distinct protein corona compositions and contents, and therapeutic and toxic effects under laser irradiation. To assess this hypothesis, the effects of laser irradiation on the...
