    Abstract
Adopting the Navier slip conditions, we analyze the fully developed electroosmotic flow in hydrophobic microducts of general cross section under the Debye-Hückel approximation. The method of analysis includes series solutions which their coefficients are obtained by applying the wall boundary conditions using the least-squares matching method. Although the procedure is general enough to be applied to almost any arbitrary cross section, eight microgeometries including trapezoidal, double-trapezoidal, isosceles triangular, rhombic, elliptical, semi-elliptical, rectangular, and isotropically etched profiles are selected for presentation. We find that the flow rate is a linear increasing...

Reduction of production rate in y-shaped microreactors in the presence of viscoelasticity

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Volume 990 , 2017 , Pages 121-134 ; 00032670 (ISSN) Helisaz, H ; Saidi, M. H ; Sadeghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The viscoelasticity effects on the reaction-diffusion rates in a Y-shaped microreactor are studied utilizing the PTT rheological model. The flow is assumed to be fully developed and considered to be created under a combined action of electroosmotic and pressure forces. In general, finite-volume-based numerical simulations are conducted to handle the problem; however, analytical solutions based on the depthwise averaging approach are also obtained for the case for which there is no reaction between the inlet components. The analytical solutions are found to predict accurate results when the width to height ratio is at least 10 and acceptable results for lower aspect ratios. An investigation...

Electroosmotic flow and ionic conductance in a pH-regulated rectangular nanochannel

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 29, Issue 6 , 2017 ; 10706631 (ISSN) Sadeghi, M ; Saidi, M. H ; Sadeghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Infinite series solutions are obtained for electrical potential, electroosmotic velocity, ionic conductance, and surface physicochemical properties of long pH-regulated rectangular nanochannels of low surface potential utilizing the double finite Fourier transform method. Closed form expressions are also obtained for channels of large height to width ratio for which the depthwise variations vanish. Neglecting the Stern layer impact, the effects of EDL (Electric Double Layer) overlap, multiple ionic species, and association/dissociation reactions on the surface are all taken into account. Moreover, finite-element-based numerical simulations are conducted to account for the end effects as well...

Enhancement of surface adsorption-desorption rates in microarrays invoking surface charge heterogeneity

    , Article Sensors and Actuators, B: Chemical ; Volume 242 , 2017 , Pages 956-964 ; 09254005 (ISSN) Abdollahzadeh, M ; Saidi, M. S ; Sadeghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This investigation is devoted to the influences of non-uniform wall characteristics on the surface adsorption-desorption rates in an electrokinetic microarray. Utilizing already explored electroosmotic and electrophoretic velocities, the species transport equations are solved by a finite-volume-based numerical approach. Uniform, sinusoidal, and pulse-like distributions of the zeta potential are considered in the analysis. The developed model is validated by comparing the results with those of two analytical solutions that are derived for limiting conditions. The results reveal that, in some cases, the surface charge heterogeneity can reduce the saturation time by more than 60%. The efficacy...

    Abstract
In this paper we report experimental results for the performance and rate of heat transfer in copper tubes in solar water heaters with thermosyphonic flow in continuation of experimental data reported in previous publications (Solar Energy, 2003, vol. 74, pp. 441-445, and Energy Sources, 1997, vol. 19, pp. 147-152). We also show a comparison between performances of three kinds of tubes: copper, polypropylene and steel under similar conditions. An analytical relation for calculation of rate of heat transfer in copper tubes is also presented in terms of Nusselt versus Reynolds and Prantdl numbers. A comparison of experimental data showed that performance of copper tubes is slightly better than...

    , Article Journal of Heat Transfer ; Volume 136, Issue 3 , March , 2014 ; ISSN: 00221481 Yavari, H ; Sadeghi, A ; Saidi, M. H ; Chakraborty, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Electroosmosis is the main mechanism for flow generation in lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices. The temperature rise due to the Joule heating phenomenon, associated with the electroosmosis, may be detrimental for samples being considered in LOCs. Hence, a complete understanding of the heat transfer physics associated with the electroosmotic flow is of high importance in design and active control of LOCs. The objective of the present study is to estimate the temperature rise and the thermal entry length in electroosmotic flow through rectangular microchannels, having potential applications in LOC devices. Along this line, the power-law rheological model is used to account for non-Newtonian behavior...

    Abstract
Electroosmosis is the predominant mechanism for flow generation in lab-on-chip devices. Since most biofluids encountered in these devices are considered to be non-Newtonian, it is vital to study the flow characteristics of common non-Newtonian models under electroosmotic body force. In this paper, the hydrodynamically fully developed electroosmotic flow of power-law fluids in rectangular microchannels is analyzed. The electrical potential and momentum equations are numerically solved through a finite difference procedure for a non-uniform grid. A thoroughgoing parametric study reveals that the Poiseuille number is an increasing function of the channel aspect ratio, the zeta potential, the...

    , Article International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 55, Issue 4 , January , 2012 , Pages 762-772 ; 00179310 (ISSN) Yavari, H ; Sadeghi, A ; Saidi, M. H ; Chakraborty, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive investigation on hydrodynamic and thermal transport properties of mixed electroosmotically and pressure driven flow in microtubes. Particular emphasis is given to investigating the combined consequences of viscous dissipation, non-uniform Joule heating, and variable thermophysical properties. Analytical solutions are obtained using the Debye-Hückel linearization and constant fluid properties assumption, while a numerical solution is presented for variable fluid properties and non-uniform distribution of Joule heating. The results indicate that, viscous heating effect is pronounced significantly when a favorable pressure gradient exists and cannot be...

    Abstract
Using software products as engineering artifacts is becoming more widespread in industry. It leads to increasing the need for training students and experts in the academic centers with software developing skills in accordance with the engineering principles and disciplines. However, one of the main challenges in the software engineering education is how to teach engineering disciplines to the students so that we can inspire the engineering concept to them. To do so if we use educational methods for teaching this course, which can show the usage of engineering disciplines to the students in practice and demonstrate the impact of their application on creating the engineered software products,...

    Abstract
In this work, the phenomenon of dynamic strain aging in a high carbon steel is studied and different initial microstructures including fine and coarse pearlite structures are considered. Tensile tests at different temperatures and strain rates are performed to evaluate the occurrence of dynamic strain aging and mechanical properties as well as to calculate apparent activation energies for onset and termination of dynamic strain aging. The results show that dynamic strain aging occurs for both microstructures while the initial microstructures alters the activation energies for appearance and termination of this phenomenon. The microstructural studies illustrate that a combination of cementite...

    , Article International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 92 , 2016 , Pages 244-251 ; 00179310 (ISSN) Keramati, H ; Sadeghi, A ; Saidi, M. H ; Chakraborty, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
The limitations of the microfabrication technology do not allow producing perfectly smooth microchannels. Hence, exploring the influences of roughness on transport phenomena in microtubes is of great importance to the scientific community. In the present work, consideration is given toward the corrugated roughness effects on fully developed electroosmotic flow and heat transfer in circular microtubes. Analytical solutions based on perturbation technique are presented for the problem assuming a low zeta potential under the constant heat flux boundary condition of the first kind. It is revealed that higher values of the corrugation number and relative roughness give rise to smaller Nusselt...

    Abstract
We study the hydrodynamic dispersion (HD) by electroosmotic flow in soft microchannels. Considering a fully developed flow in a slit microchannel of low surface potential and adopting the Taylor dispersion theory, we derive analytical solutions for the solute concentration field and the effective dispersion coefficient. We also conduct numerical analyses to broaden the paper's scope to high surface potentials and to specify a criterion for the validity of the Debye-Hückel linearization in soft microconduits as well as to investigate the broadening of an analyte band from the time of injection. It is demonstrated that the effective dispersion coefficient of a neutral solute band is generally...

    Abstract
The biofluids being manipulated in lab-on-a-chip devices usually contain elastic macromolecules. Accordingly, for an accurate modeling of the relevant flow physics one should invoke viscoelastic constitutive equations. In this paper, attention is paid toward the hydrodynamic dispersion by the fully developed electroosmotic flow of PTT viscoelastic fluids in slit microchannels of low zeta potential. Adopting the Taylor–Aris approach, analytical solutions are derived for late-time solute concentration and effective dispersion coefficient. Finite element-based numerical simulations are also conducted to monitor the broadening of an analyte band from the moment of injection. Both approaches are...

    Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a predictive method for heat transfer coefficients in solar water heaters and their performance evaluation of such heaters with different materials used as heat collectors. Two approaches have been used: conventional method and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict the performance of solar water heaters and to compare these two approaches. This performance is measured in terms of outlet temperature by using a set of conventional feed forward multi-layer neural networks. The actual experimental data which were used as our network's input gathered from published literature (for polypropylene tubes) and from the experiments carried out recently using...

    Abstract
Asynchronous circuits have many advantages vs synchronous design styles like high performance and lower power consumption; however, there is a drawback of big overhead in handshake circuitry of these circuits. In this paper, we have reduced the amount of these extra circuits by take advantage of some compiler techniques. The compiler methods can be used innovatively to improve the synthesis results in terms of both power consumption and area, since these code motions lead to removing of completion detection and validity check parts of asynchronous designs. To the best of our knowledge this is the first effort in using the compiler pre-synthesis optimizations in asynchronous circuits to...
