In order to understand and improve the performance of this process, modeling and design of an appropriate control strategy is needed. ADM1 is the most accurate model for this process which is used in this study to describe and simulate the anaerobic reactor. Constrained and unconstrained...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghalami-choobar, Behnam (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, adaptive control of HIV infection was investigated based on feedback linearization. The parameter projection method, adaptive nonlinear observer and dynamic anti-windup were employed in implementation of adaptive control method to prevent singularity problem, to estimate system states and to avoid windup problem of external PID controller, respectively. Finally,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghoreishi Mohammadi, Aref (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Vafa, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Because of lower energy consumption and lower capital cost, divided wall columns attracted wide attention. The main challenge of these units is their controllability. In this thesis dynamic simulation and control of a divided wall column is investigated and an adaptive model predictive controller has been used for control purpose. For dynamic simulation the Aspen Dynamics software and for applying control strategy the MATLAB software have been utilized. The model used for model predictive controller has been obtained by using open loop responses of the system. The main advantage of presented work over the existing ones is using the input-output transfer function of the system model instead...

Controlling the Operational Conditions of a Greenhouse

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fallah Ramezani, Saeed (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Vafa, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Researchers have paid more attention to greenhouse cultivation, due to the exacerbation of food and water crisis. Higher production with lower cost could be achieved through greenhouse climate control (temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide concentration). However, greenhouse climate control is a challenging task, because greenhouses have highly interactive nonlinear dynamics and model uncertainties and are subject to input saturation. In light of the fact that Iran is a country with a warm and arid climate, tunnel greenhouses equipped with evaporative cooling system are very common in Iran. Accordingly, this type of greenhouse is considered for modelling, simulation and control in this...

Modeling and Simulation of Particle Size Distribution of Polystyrene in a Semibatch Suspension Polymerization

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farahzadi, Hamzeh (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Suspension polymerization is an important industrial process. Product of this process is particulate polymers that have a widely use in human lives. An important property of suspension polymerization process is the particle size distribution (PSD), which affects the end-use properties of the products. Therefore, the evolution of PSD is a major concern in the design of a suspension polymerization process. In a suspension polymerization reactor the evaluation of particle size distribution is the result of the interaction of the mixing conditions and the kinetics of the polymerization reactions. Mathematical modeling of particle size distribution in suspension polymerization processes should...

Stability Analysis of Different Control Strategies in the Presence of Nonlinear Dynamic of Final Control Element

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fadaie Tehrani, Ekram (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Final control elements usually have nonlinear dynamics which affect the stability of the closed- loop system. Four most common types of these nonlinearities are dead-zone, backlash, hysteresis and saturation. Because most of final control elements especially in chemical processes are subjected to saturation constraint and also due to lack of generaland practical control scheme to handle this limitation, our concentration will be focused on saturation nonlinearity. In this work, based on sliding mode control strategy, a control scheme for multi-input multi-state systems in the presence of input saturation is presented. Some numerical simulations are carried out to show the effectiveness of...

    Abstract
Due to the high cost and destructive effects of fossil fuels, the biogas production as a renewable and environmentally friendly fuel attracted much attention. In this regard, several targets are considered in this research. First, in order to increase of biogas production yield and accelerating the rate limiting steps in anaerobic digestion of wheat straw (lignocellulosic feedstock), the effect of additives containing trace elements (Fe and Ni) in form of nanoparticles and their salts was investigated through batch experiments. The results showed that addition of nanoparticles or salts resulted in the increase of methane production rate during the first 4 days of experiments. Then, a...

Design of a Nonlinear Controller for a Bioreactor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghofrani, Parisa (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Biotechnology is one of the fields that has had great advances in the past decades, and therefore controlling biological processes (bioreactors) is considered as an important issue. The purpose of current thesis is designing an adaptive controller for a bioreactor by considering input constrain and proving the stability of closed loop. A standard bioreactor has been chosen for this purpose. First a non-adaptive controller has been designed. Then an adaptive controller is designed and implemented on a bioreactor in the presence of input constraint, because in practice the system parameters are unknown. Finally by applying disturbance to the system, it has been shown that the proposed control...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Askari, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Most of dynamical models in the real world, have various restrictions and complexities in their structures. These constraints make the controller design much more difficult. In this work, it has been tried to design the controller for two kinds of common dynamical systems in the presence of these restriction by using the fuzzy logic systems. Several restrictions are investigated in this project such as unknown dynamic of the model, unmeasured state variables, unknown control directions, existence of time delay in the input and the state variables, input saturation and controller singularity. The backstepping technique and the dynamic surfaces control approach have been used to design the...

These three cases are compared based on their performances in fault diagnosis of a yeast fermentation bioreactor for three different conditions. The results indicate...

“Modeling and Control of Methanol to Propylene Reactor”

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taherifar, Roghayeh (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Methanol to Olefin (MTO) process is a part of the Methanol to Gasoline (MTG) production in a catalytic bed. Usually for this process, HZSM-5 or SAPO-n catalyst is used. In this research, dynamic modeling and simulation of the methanol to olefin catalytic reactor using HZSM-5 as the catalyst is done. The system is modeled based on the kinetic model for HZSM-5 presented by Castilla in 1999 [22]. Since the reaction is exothermic, taking use of a cooling system is essential. According to the high reactor temperature, a molten salt environment is used as the cooling media. In this cooling system, the molten salt absorbs heat of reaction from the reactor tubes and transfers it to a coil connected...

Application of Adaptive Neural Network Systems in Controller Design of Nonlinear Processes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talkhoncheh, Mahdi Khajeh (Author) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project design of adaptive neural network controller for uncertain nonlinear systems in the presence of different restrictions has been investigated. After providing introduction and motivation, two general forms of nonlinear systems including strict- feedback and pure- feedback have been introduced. In order to solve the problem caused by each restriction, a solution has been proposed. For the strict- feedback nonlinear systems several restrictions are considered such as, unknown dynamic model, unmeasured state, input saturation, unknown control directions, time delays in states and input. Stability analysis based on the Lyapunov theorem has been established. In addition, two kinds...
