    Abstract
The vision of advanced long-term evolution (LTE-A) project is set to ultimate increase of network capacity in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). In HetNets with small cell configuration, a considerable majority of user devices is eventually connected to the macrocell base station (MBS), while small base stations (BSs), such as femtocell access points (FAPs), are still without any user. This results in unbalanced load and reduces the data rate of macrocell user equipment (MUE). In this paper, a method is proposed for load balancing among FAPs, while desired throughput is achieved. The proposed method uses the estimated received signal strength from different BSs and adjusted pilot signals....

Energy-spectral efficient resource allocation and power control in heterogeneous networks with D2D communication

    , Article Wireless Networks ; 2018 ; 10220038 (ISSN) Khazali, A ; Sobhi Givi, S ; Kalbkhani, H ; Shayesteh, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Heterogeneous networks (HetNets) provide the demand for high data rates. In this study, we analyze the coexistence of femtocells and device-to-device (D2D) communication with macrocells. Interference management and decreasing energy consumption are two important issues in HetNets. To this end, we propose an efficient fractional frequency reuse (FFR)-based spectrum partitioning scheme to reduce the cross-tier interference. We also propose to use different optimization problems for resource allocation in different tiers. For this purpose, an energy efficient optimization problem is applied to D2D user equipment. Further, an optimization problem based on the spectral efficiency, i.e.,...

    Abstract
Device-to-Device (D2D) communication technology, under the standardization of third generation partnership project and a component of the evolving fifth generation architecture, is mainly aimed to increase system capacity and data rate via providing direct communications between end devices without the use of routing data through the network. Apart from the attracting features, due to the resource sharing between cellular user equipment (CUE) and D2D user equipment (DUE) in such communications, an efficient algorithm for resource and power allocation to DUE, especially for mobile users is necessary to maintain the performance. The current paper introduces a joint mode algorithm for mobile...

QoS-based multi-criteria handoff algorithm for femto-macro cellular networks

    , Article Wireless Personal Communications ; Volume 98, Issue 1 , 2018 , Pages 1435-1460 ; 09296212 (ISSN) Kalbkhani, H ; Jafarpour Alamdari, S ; Shayesteh, M. G ; Solouk, V ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The hierarchical coexistence of femtocells and macrocells is a promising approach for heterogeneous networks (HetNets), dealing mainly with indoor coverage issues and providing high data rates in cellular networks. As for any HetNet, mobility management with handoff issues on top, should be studied prior to hindering the successful deployment of these networks. The current study introduces a new handoff algorithm in hierarchical macro/femtocell HetNets based on the combination of quality of service metrics for efficient network selection including: received signal strength, co-channel interference level, and outage probability of each of femtocell and macrocell networks. The proposed...

Wettability alteration of calcite rock from gas- repellent to gas-wet using a fluorinated nanofluid: A surface analysis study

    , Article Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering ; Volume 83 , 2020 Azadi Tabar, M ; Shafiei, Y ; Shayesteh, M ; Dehghan Monfared, A ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Wettability alteration analysis form gas-repellent to gas-wet with the aid of chemical agents has been subjected of numerous studies. However, fundamental understanding of the effect of surface tension of liquid on repellency strength, the change in the intermolecular forces due to the adsorption of nanoparticles onto the rock surfaces, and exposure of treated rock in brine are not well discussed in the available literature. In this study, X-ray diffraction, Atomic Force Microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were applied to characterize the treated and fresh samples. Dynamic and static contact angle measurements were then combined with six methods...

Stick-slip behavior of sessile drop on the surfaces with irregular roughnesses

    , Article Chemical Engineering Research and Design ; Volume 160 , 2020 , Pages 216-223 Azadi Tabar, M ; Shayesteh, M ; Shafiei, Y ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this work, sessile drop and low-bond axisymmetric drop shape analysis methods were coupled to provide some new aspects on stick-slip behavior as well as stick time of a drop on calcite surfaces. Slightly hydrophobic calcite surfaces typified with three irregular roughnesses were used to create irregular surfaces to mimic defects for the water-calcite-air systems. Polishing papers of 200, 600, and 1200 grit and a polishing machine were used to prepare surfaces. X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and atomic force microscopy techniques were employed to evaluate the chemical and physical properties of surfaces. A model was developed to predict...

    Abstract
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common brain disorder among children. It presents various symptoms, hence, utilizing the information obtained from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time-series data can be useful. Finding functional connections in typically developed control (TDC) and ADHD patients can be helpful in classification. The aim of this paper is to present a multifold method for the study of fMRI data to diagnose ADHD patients. In the proposed method, first, by applying the Stockwell transform (ST), we obtain detailed information about the time-series of the region of interests (ROIs) in the time and frequency domains. ST provides information about...

Classification of sleep stages based on LSTAR model

    Abstract
Sleep study is very important in the health since sleep disorders affect the productivity of individuals. One of the important topics in sleep research is the classification of sleep stages using the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal. Electrical activities of brain are measured by EEG signal in the laboratory. In real-world environments, EEG signal is also used in portable monitoring devices to analyze sleep. In this study, we propose an efficient method for classification of sleep stages. EEG signals are examined by a new model from autoregressive (AR) family, namely logistic smooth transition autoregressive (LSTAR) to study sleep process. In contrast to the AR model, LSTAR is a non-linear...
