    Abstract
Metal plates are essential parts of structures such as ship hulls and offshore oil platforms. These plates are typically under compressive axial forces. Hence, one of the main mechanisms for failure and collapse of such structures is buckling of plates. Thus, for safe and secure design, buckling strength of plates should be evaluated. Finite element analysis techniques are perfect tools for this purpose because of the accuracy and flexibility for performing simulations with different variables. In this study, the strength of aluminum plates has been studied using finite element analysis software and it was tried to study the influence of variables such as initial imperfections, plate...

A new procedure to determine equivalent strut of infill walls with openings for engineering applications

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers: Structures and Buildings ; Volume 173, Issue 8 , 2020 , Pages 585-601 Tabeshpour, M. R ; Noorifard, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    ICE Publishing  2020
    Abstract
In architecture, design of doors and windows for functional requirements, circulation, natural light and ventilation, aesthetics and view is inevitable. Parameters such as size, location and aspect ratio of the openings change the seismic behaviour of infilled frames. Ignoring these parameters in structural analysis may lead to substantial inaccuracy in predicting the lateral stiffness, strength and ductility of the frame. Despite numerous experimental and numerical studies on perforated infill walls in recent decades, the related provisions are rare in seismic codes and engineers tend not to use their results in analysis and design due to their complexity. The main purpose of this work was...

    , Article Journal of Fluid Mechanics ; Volume 887 , 2020 Sadeghi, M ; Saidi, M. H ; Moosavi, A ; Sadeghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Cambridge University Press  2020
    Abstract
The dispersion of a neutral solute band by electrokinetic flow in polyelectrolyte layer (PEL)-grafted rectangular/slit microchannels is theoretically studied. The flow is assumed to be both steady and fully developed and a first-order irreversible reaction is considered at the wall to account for probable surface adsorption of solutes. Considering low electric potentials, analytical solutions are obtained for electric potential, fluid velocity and solute concentration. Special solutions are also obtained for the case without wall adsorption. To track the dispersion properties of the solute band, the generalized dispersion model is adopted by considering the exchange, the convection and the...

On the static and dynamic stability of thin beam conveying fluid

    , Article Meccanica ; Volume 54, Issue 11-12 , 2019 , Pages 1847-1868 ; 00256455 (ISSN) Askarian, A. R ; Abtahi, H ; Firouz Abadi, R. D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Netherlands  2019
    Abstract
In this paper, numerical investigation of the statical and dynamical stability of aligned and misaligned viscoelastic cantilevered beam is performed with a terminal nozzle in the presence of gravity in two cases: (1) effect of fluid velocity on the flutter boundary of beam conveying fluid and (2) effect of gravity on the buckling boundary of beam conveying fluid. The beam is assumed to have a large width-to-thickness ratio, so the out-of-plane bending rigidity is far higher than the in-plane bending and torsional rigidities. Gravity vector is considered in the vertical direction. Thus, deflection of the beam because of the gravity effect couples the in-plane bending and torsional equations....

Water drop impact on a semi-cylindrical convex hot surface for a diameter ratio of unity

    , Article Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science ; Volume 106 , 2019 , Pages 68-77 ; 08941777 (ISSN) Jowkar, S ; Morad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2019
    Abstract
When a liquid drop impacts on a hot non-flat surface the curvature of the surface and its geometrical characteristics transmute the physical regimes and their boundary compared to a flat surface impact. The present experimental study is focused on water drop impingement on a mimetic solid semi-cylindrical convex hot surface, with a size equal to the drop. The thermal versus inertia map of generated regimes is obtained, while some well-known regimes associated with a flat surface are not observed for the present non-flat impacts. These include rebounding of the main drop and atomization which are common observed phenomena when the hot surface is flat. The maximum spreading of the droplet is...

    Abstract
Micro-mixers are considered as vital components of Micro Total Analysis systems (μTAS). Major objective in the design of micro-mixers is achieving high mixing quality in short mixing times. In this paper, numerical simulation of some micro-mixer designs has been carried out to understand the detailed flow pattern and thereby to propose modifications for improving mixing efficiency. It is well known that inducing convection will provide turbulent like behavior with corresponding mixing enhancement. In micro systems to drive the flow, electro-osmotic force is usually used by introducing electrodes. In this work, mixing electrodes have been implemented to induce convection and eddies. This...

    , Article Journal of Thermal Stresses ; Volume 42, Issue 7 , 2019 , Pages 801-814 ; 01495739 (ISSN) Borjalilou, V ; Asghari, M ; Bagheri, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this article, the size-dependent behavior of micro-beams with the thermoelastic damping (TED) phenomenon is studied. The coupled thermoelasticity equations are derived on the basis of the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and dual-phase-lag (DPL) heat conduction model. By solving these coupled equations simultaneously, a closed-form expression for the TED parameter in micro-beams is presented which considers the small-scale effects incorporation. Then, the effect of various parameters on TED in micro-beams, such as micro-beam height, the type of material, boundary conditions, and aspect ratio is investigated. The results show that the influence of utilizing non-classical continuum and...

Steel plate shear walls having door openings with different arrangements of stiffeners

    , Article Advances in Structural Engineering ; Volume 22, Issue 10 , 2019 , Pages 2222-2235 ; 13694332 (ISSN) Rostami, P ; Mofid, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    SAGE Publications Inc  2019
    Abstract
As steel plate shear walls are typically used in the building central cores around the elevators and stairs, introduction of an opening as door seems to be inevitable in steel plate shear wall spans. Due to the weakening of the steel plate shear walls’ performance caused by this particular type of opening, the use of stiffeners around the opening is necessary. Nevertheless, introduction of stiffeners around all sides of the opening, which does continue to boundary elements, is very expensive and inefficient. Therefore, the study on the effect of different arrangements of stiffeners on the behavior of steel plate shear walls is significant. In this research, a number of steel plate shear...

    , Article Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science ; Volume 103 , 2019 , Pages 274-285 ; 08941777 (ISSN) Oshaghi, M. R ; Shahsavari, M ; Afshin, H ; Firoozabadi, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2019
    Abstract
In the present research, the rising behavior of air bubble in a viscous liquid is investigated experimentally. Aqueous solutions of glycerol and CMC were used as the Newtonian and shear-thinning non-Newtonian viscous liquids, respectively. The bubble is formed via injection of air by a syringe pump and rises in the quiescent viscous liquid. The process was captured using a high-speed camera (1000 fps) and was post processed to obtain the bubble characteristics such as the center of mass and aspect ratio. The experimental results were verified using the existing literatures and the non-dimensional numbers were reduced to two (Velocity number and Flow number) by lumping the parameters. In...

    Abstract
The purpose of this experimental work is to study the effect of slot depth to width ratio, rotational motion and inlet velocity on friction factor and Nusselt number in an annular flow between two concentric cylinders with smooth and slotted surface. The heated outer surface is stationary and the unheated inner one is rotating. This configuration is popular in industrial applications such as internal air system of gas turbine engines, cooling of rotating machinery, techniques of chemical vapor deposition and solidification of pure metals. The results show that the ratio of average slotted surface friction factor to that of the smooth one enhances by increasing the slot depth to width ratio...

    Abstract
An experimental investigation of primary breakup dynamics and spray characteristics of a rotary atomizer with high aspect ratio radial-axial discharge channel is described. A high-resolution shadow imaging technique with pulsed backlight illumination was used for spray visualization. For the rotary atomizer with high aspect ratio discharge channel and radial-axial orientation, visualization showed the occurrence of Centripetal–Coriolis-induced stream-mode injection for all operating conditions. In this mode of injection, a crescent liquid film forms in the channel exit and issues from the orifice as a liquid column or a thin liquid sheet depending on atomizer operating conditions. It was...

    Abstract
Trajectory and penetration of elliptical liquid jets emerged into a low-speed crossflow of air are studied. The jets are introduced to the crossflow at different momentum ratios ranging from 1 to 300. The images are analyzed to obtain the trajectories of the outer boundary of the jets for two different aspect ratios. An empirical correlation is proposed for the present injector geometries and for the range of momentum ratio, Weber, and Reynolds numbers used in this study. Finally, a theoretical model for the trajectory of the liquid column for an initially elliptical liquid emerging into a crossflow is presented, and the associated drag coefficients are obtained for a precise trajectory...

    Abstract
A three phase electromagnetic stirrer was used to agitate aluminum A356 slurry and a dry and oxygen free argon gas was introduced in to the slurry by a porous graphite core at a same time. The prepared semi-solid slurry was then transferred into a metallic mold and was compacted by a drop weight. Results demonstrated a favorable increase in shape factor, decrease in aspect ratio and average diameter size at different intensities of stirring. The intensity of stirring was changed by altering the current passed through the magnetic coil and also bubbling intensity via the porous graphite diffuser. Different time intervals for electromagnetic stirring and gas induction were applied. Agitating...

The effects of bubble detachment shape on rising bubble hydrodynamics

    Abstract
Local velocities and aspect ratios of rising bubbles were measured to investigate the effects of bubble detachment shape on rising bubble hydrodynamics. Two types of capillary were employed to generate bubbles of identical volume: one glassy nozzle aligned vertically and the other stainless steel needle aligned horizontally. Horizontally injected bubbles have a spherical initial shape, and their values of aspect ratio slightly fluctuate around unity. However, vertically injected bubbles have a surface-stretched initial shape, and their values of aspect ratios decrease sharply from 1.1 to 0.65. There is a notable correspondence between the variation of local velocities and aspect ratios that...
