Predictive Equations for Shear Link Modeling Toward Collapse

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moammer, Omid (Author) ; Mohtasham Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this paper the predictive equations for collapse assessment of shear links used in eccentric braced frames are developed. An extensive database including results of over 70 cyclic tests on steel wide flange shear links is collected and the structural parameters governing the hysteresis behavior are calibrated using a simplified numerical model. The methodology of calibration is to minimize the discrepancy between the experimental hysteresis loops and the corresponding numerical results using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The objective function of PSO algorithm is minimized by iterating parameters that govern the hysteresis behavior of the numerical model. Stepwise...

Introducing of Novel Method to Improve the Process of Imaging in a Gamma Camera Equipped with Square PMTs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amir Mozafari Sabet, Kiarash (Author) ; Bagheri Shouraki, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Fatemizadeh, Emad (Supervisor) ; Ay, Mohammad Reza (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The gamma cameras, based on scintillation crystal followed by an array of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), play a crucial role in nuclear medicine. The use of square PMTs provides the minimum dead zones in the camera. The camera with squared PMTs also reduces the number of PMTs relative to the detection area.In this thesis, we introduced a new read-out method whereby the total cost of the read-out board will be decreased by a factor of 2.4; in return, the energy and spatial resolution of the system will be reduced by 0.3% and 0.4% respectively. We also implemented a positioning module in the FPGA chip via that the transmission rate between FPGA and the computer will be tripled, and the...

Optimal Target Reliability for Seismic Design of Mid-rise Steel Buildings Based on Detailed Risk Analysis

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Habibi, Kasra (Author) ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Most of the seismic regulations in the Iranian design codes are adopted from the U.S. codes, while the severe earthquake rates with regards to the gross area and total population of Iran is 8.4 and 5.5 times the rates for U.S. respectively. In fact, Iranian rates are between the ones for U.S. and Japan which have up to 200% difference in prescribed strength level in their seismic codes. Poor construction quality regarding defected control in Iran adds to the problem. Therefore, the prescribed strength level of U.S. building codes and thus their target reliability index seems insufficient for use in Iran. Also, previous research has shown that the load and resistance factors in Iranian...

    Abstract
Damage and collapse of structural systems due to externally applied loadings, are inevitable, which cause financial and human losses. Therefore, the application of structural health monitoring (SHM) strategies has attracted a lot of attention in order to estimate structural damages, optimal maintenance and preventing structural collapse. Hence, in recent decades, the development of research activities in the field of structural health monitoring and its application in civil engineering, has led to the invention of various techniques and methods in assessing the safety of structures. These methods not only should be accurate enough for confidently identifying diverse severity of damages, but...

Noise Analysis and Performance Improvement of Microwave Diode Mixers, and Improving the Method of Noise Figure Measurement

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rahmati, Mohammad Mehdi (Author) ; Banai, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In spite of developments in microwave mixers, reducing its noise figure is still a designers’ challenge in receiver applications. Due to generating intermodulations and saturating the following stages, the low noise amplifier cannot have a so much gain to decrease the noise of the following stages in a typical receiver. This problem is intensified in special applications because of low dynamic range of low noise amplifiers. Accordingly, the low noise amplifier is replaced sometimes by the mixer. Therefore, the design of a low noise mixer is an important issue in improving the noise performance of a total receiver. To this end, it is required to accurately analyse the nonlinear and noise...

    Abstract
The need to measure the authenticity of food has always been an important concern of many countries. Since food fraud can cause serious problems, every year, much research is conducted in the field of food authenticity all over the world. Milk among dairy products and orange juice among fruit juices are two categories of widely consumed beverages all over the world, therefore they are exposed to various frauds from the manufacturers. Frauds such as adding water to milk and preservatives such as hydrogen peroxide, formaldehyde, and sodium hypochlorite are common frauds that are added to milk to increase its volume and storage time. Among the common cases of adulteration in orange juice, we...

Risk-based Framework for Optimal Calibration of Building Seismic Design Provisions through Minimization of Lifecycle Cost

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Saeed Hosseini Varzandeh (Author) ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This dissertation proposes a probabilistic framework for optimal calibration of design provisions based on the minimization of lifecycle cost (LCC) and its uncertainty. Subsequently, this framework is utilized to determine the optimal robust design base shear coefficient of building structures, and propose a methodology for codifying it while preserving the current structure of the base shear equation. In the first part of the proposed methodology, various structures are designed with different seismic base shears. Then, at each site, their LCC comprising the construction costs and seismic losses is calculated. Various types of seismic loss considered in this study include the direct...

Conceptualization of a fresh groundwater lens influenced by climate change: A modeling study of an arid-region island in the Persian Gulf, Iran

    , Article Journal of Hydrology ; Vol. 519, issue. PA , 2014 , pp. 399-413 ; ISSN: 00221694 Mahmoodzadeh, D ; Ketabchi, H ; Ataie-Ashtiani, B ; Simmons, C. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Understanding the fresh groundwater lens (FGL) behavior and potential threat of climatic-induced seawater intrusion (SWI) are significant for the future water resources management of many small islands. In this paper, the FGL of Kish Island, an arid-region case in the Persian Gulf, Iran, is modeled using two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) simulations. These simulations are based on the application of SUTRA, a density-dependent groundwater numerical model. Also, the numerical model parameters are calibrated using PEST, an automated parameter estimation code. Firstly a detailed conceptualization of the FGL model is completed to understand the sensitivity of the FGL to some...

Time of concentration of surface flow in complex hillslopes

    , Article Journal of Hydrology and Hydromechanics ; Volume 61, Issue 4 , 2013 , Pages 269-277 ; 0042790X (ISSN) Sabzevari, T ; Saghafian, B ; Talebi, A ; Ardakanian, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Versita  2013
    Abstract
Time of concentration (TC) of surface flow in watersheds depends on the coupled response of hillslopes and stream networks. The important point in this background is to study the effects of the geometry and the shape of complex hillslopes on the time of concentration considering the degree of flow convergence (convergent, parallel or divergent) as well as the profile curvature (concave, straight or convex). In this research, the shape factor of complex hillslopes as introduced by Agnese et al. (2007) is generalized and linked to the TC. A new model for calculating TC of complex hillslopes is presented, which depends on the plan shape, the type and degree of profile curvature, the Manning...

Useful multivariate kinetic analysis: Size determination based on cystein-induced aggregation of gold nanoparticles

    , Article Spectrochimica Acta - Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy ; Volume 115 , 2013 , Pages 588-594 ; 13861425 (ISSN) Rabbani, F ; Nezhad, M. R. H ; Abdollahi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This study describes spectrometric monitored kinetic processes to determine the size of citrate-capped Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) based on aggregation induced by L-cysteine (L-Cys) as a molecular linker. The Au NPs association process is thoroughly dependent on pH, concentration and size of nanoparticles. Size dependency of aggregation inspirits to determine the average diameters of Au NPs. For this aim the procedure is achieved in aqueous medium at pH 7 (phosphate buffer), and multivariate data including kinetic spectra of Au NPs are collected during aggregation process. Subsequently partial least squares (PLS) modeling is carried out analyzing the obtained data. The model is built on the...

    Abstract
The energy calibration and resolution of the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) of the CMS detector have been determined using proton-proton collision data from LHC operation in 2010 and 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV with integrated luminosities of about 5fb-1. Crucial aspects of detector operation, such as the environmental stability, alignment, and synchronization, are presented. The in-situ calibration procedures are discussed in detail and include the maintenance of the calibration in the challenging radiation environment inside the CMS detector. The energy resolution for electrons from Z-boson decays is better than 2% in the central region of the ECAL barrel (for...

    Abstract
At the Large Hadron Collider, the identification of jets originating from b quarks is important for searches for new physics and for measurements of standard model processes. A variety of algorithms has been developed by CMS to select b-quark jets based on variables such as the impact parameters of charged-particle tracks, the properties of reconstructed decay vertices, and the presence or absence of a lepton, or combinations thereof. The performance of these algorithms has been measured using data from proton-proton collisions at the LHC and compared with expectations based on simulation. The data used in this study were recorded in 2011 at s = 7 TeV for a total integrated luminosity of 5.0...

Localized surface plasmon resonance sensor for simultaneous kinetic determination of peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Volume 762 , 2013 , Pages 87-93 ; 00032670 (ISSN) Tashkhourian, J ; Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Khodaveisi, J ; Dashti, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A new sensor for simultaneous determination of peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide using silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) as a chromogenic reagent is introduced. The silver nanoparticles have the catalytic ability for the decomposition of peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide; then the decomposition of them induces the degradation of silver nanoparticles. Hence, a remarkable change in the localized surface plasmon resonance absorbance strength could be observed. Spectra-kinetic approach and artificial neural network was applied for the simultaneous determination of peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Linear calibration graphs were obtained in the concentration range of (8.20×10-5 to...

    Abstract
In the present study, a prediction model was derived for the effective angle of shearing resistance (φ′) of soils using a novel hybrid method coupling genetic programming (GP) and orthogonal least squares algorithm (OLS). The proposed nonlinear model relates φ′ to the basic soil physical properties. A comprehensive experimental database of consolidated-drained triaxial tests was used to develop the model. Traditional GP and least square regression analyses were performed to benchmark the GP/OLS model against classical approaches. Validity of the model was verified using a part of laboratory data that were not involved in the calibration process. The statistical measures of correlation...

Using three different optical fiber designs to study humidity effect on the air refractive index

    , Article Optics and Lasers in Engineering ; Volume 50, Issue 11 , November , 2012 , Pages 1495-1500 ; 01438166 (ISSN) Golnabi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Design and operation of three different optical designs based on the light intensity modulation for investigation of the humidity effects on the air index of refraction are described. The measurement variable is the transmitted power, which depends on the refractive index of the medium in the path of a fiber-to-fiber optical design. Three different probes (probe #1, #2, and #3) are tested in which probe #1 and probe #2 can also check the presence of water or any other transparent liquid in the gap between the two axial fibers. Performances of the new systems are tested as a refractive index monitoring mean and experimental results are given. The variations of the modulated powers as...

    Abstract
We report herein the development of a highly sensitive colorimetric method for the determination of cysteine and glutathione, based on aggregation of the citrate capped gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). This was exploited from high affinity of low-molecular-weight aminothiols towards the Au NPs surface, which could induce displacement of the citrate shell by the thiolate shell of target molecules, resulting in aggregation of the NPs through intermolecular electrostatic interaction or hydrogen-bonding. As a result of aggregation, which can be affected by the ionic strength, pH and concentration of Au NPs, the plasmon band at around 521 nm decreases gradually, along with formation of a new red...

    Abstract
Background: Celiac disease (CD) is a disorder associated with body reaction to gluten. After the gluten intake, an immune reaction against the protein occurs and damages villi of small intestine in celiac patients gradually. Objectives: The OSC, a filtering method for minimization of inter- and intra-spectrom-eter variations that influence on data acquisition, was applied to biofluid NMR data of CD patients. Patients and Methods: In this study, metabolites of total 56 serum samples from 12 CD patients, 15 CD patients taking gluten-free diet (GFD), and 29 healthy cases were analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and associated theoretical analysis. Employ-ing ProMetab (version...

Investigation of humidity effect on the air refractive index using an optical fiber design

    Abstract
In this study operation of an optical design based on the intensity modulation for the refractive index change has been described. The reported instrument measures the transmitted output power depending up on the medium refractive index in the light path of a fiber-to-fiber design. A liquid cell is located between the fibers in the light path and power variations for different cold and hot water levels in the cell are measured. By using a reference humidity meter the calibration curve representing the relative humidity (%RH) as a function of the transmitted output power is obtained. For the hot water with the final temperature of T = 32.7°C the output power range of 255.0 -313.OnW is...

    Abstract
A multicomponent analysis method based on principal component analysis-artificial neural network model (PC-ANN) is proposed for the simultaneous determination of levodopa (LD) and benserazide hydrochloride (BH). The method is based on the reaction of levodopa and benserazide hydrochloride with silver nitrate as an oxidizing agent in the presence of PVP and formation of silver nanoparticles. The reaction monitored at analytical wavelength 440 nm related to surface plasmon resonance band of silver nanoparticles. Differences in the kinetic behavior of the levodopa and benserazide hydrochloride were exploited by using principal component analysis, an artificial neural network (PC-ANN) to resolve...
