Simulation of Fluid Aliquoting in Centrifugal Microfluidics

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yousefpour, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Arghavani, Jamal (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a numerical analysis of micro chamber filling in centrifugal microfluidics is investigated. In the development of micro total analysis systems, it is often necessary to achieve complete and uniform filling of relatively large micro chambers. With centrifugal devices, these large micro chambers must often be orientated perpendicularly to the direction of centrifugal force and are usually bounded by materials with varying surface properties. On the other hand, the mixing characterization of two fluid by centrifugal microfluidic method has been also conducted. The multiphase flow analyses based on Eulerian-Eulerian approach have been conducted and the VOF method was used for ...

Aerodynamic Instability Modeling of a High Speed Centrifugal Compressor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saboori, Rozhin (Author) ; Ghorbanian, Kaveh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The present thesis investigates the surge phenomenon of high speed centrifugal compressors. Surge is a highly undesired condition and may cause severe damage to the machine and thus the plant. Traditionally, surge is avoided via a surge avoidance scheme wih recycle valve in discharge at the most common approach. A one dimensional technique is developed where the Greitzer lumped parameter model along with the Gravdahl one dimensional model is considered as the basis. Shaft dynamics, volume dynamics, losses, energy transfer and time lag are imbedded in the present model to improve the prediction of the compressor characteristics beyond the stability region. On the other hand, in order to...

Study on the Mass Transfer and Isotope Separation Phenomena in a Gas Centrifuge by Using FEREON Mixtures as Model Compounds

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fard Kashani, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Outokesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Karimi-Sabet, Javad (Supervisor) ; Norouzi, Ali (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
In the nuclear industry, gas centrifuges are considered of high importance for the purpose of uranium enrichment. Today, with advances in science and technology, the use of gas centrifuges for separating isotopes other than uranium, is so common. With respect to the use of conventional methods such as Pancake equation in calculating the velocity profile in centrifuges, it is needed that A^2=(MV^2)/2RT≫1 (M: Feed molecular weight; V: Peripheral speed of centrifuge; T: Mean temperature of feed; R: The universal constant of gases). While the molecular weight of the feed mixture gets lower, the A2 parameter gets closer to one. So, other methods for modeling the behavior of the gas in the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadr, Motahareh (Author) ; Ghorbanian, Kaveh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of this study is developing the design means of a high pressure centrifugal compressor impeller for aviational applications i.e. turboshaft engines. The logic and constraints of designing a high pressure centrifugal impeller for a turboshaft engine is different from those of low pressure aerial or high speed industrial ones. This kind of impeller is deployed in a number of advanced generation of aero engines. In this study, the centrifugal impeller design tools are developed using two design methods. Then, the results are compared, validated and corrected with an existing high pressure impeller data. A number of impellers with pressure ratios ranging from 6 to 11 are designed and...

Fault Detection in Centrifugal Pump Using Current Signature Analysis of Induction Motor and Vibration

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahdavifar, Saeed (Author) ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Asghari, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Pumps are widely used in oil and gas industry. Therefore condition monitoring for this type of equipment is very important. The motor current signature analysis (MCSA) technique as one of the condition monitoring techniques is very effective in the industry, but it is less used in industry. All conventional methods require additional sensors to be installed in the system; current signature analysis as a sensorless method can reduce the cost of condition monitoring. In this study, motor current signature analysis technique was used to diagnosis a centrifugal pump with a capacity of 187 kW from the refinery industry. The impeller wearing ring clearance problem has been investigated. This...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asghary, Maryam (Author) ; Ghorbanian, Kaveh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Overall performance improvement of gas turbine is available by modifying each component of cycle. The purpose of this research is to improve performance of a micro turbine with 200 KW power, by redesigning compressor set. Considerable increase in performance and stability occurs, by adding individual stage of axial compressor at the entry of centrifugal section. It should be noted that, this improvement occurs without a significant increase in size and without having to change the centrifugal compressor design. In this study, design of one stage axial compressor and three dimensional modeling is discussed after, modeling and preliminary design of centrifugal compressor. Then, after obtaining...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akbari, Ali (Author) ; Shamloo, Amir (Supervisor) ; Firoozbakhsh, Keikhosrow (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project a centrifugal, microfluidic platform to the end of separation and studying circulating tumor cells is designed, modelled and analyzed. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are specific types of cancer cells which leave the original tumor and enter the blood stream. For the separation of CTCs, a novel anti-body separation technic has been used which targets the specific MCF7 CTCs using their corresponding Ep-CAM antibody. First the Ep-CAM antibody is coated on magnetic nanoparticles through a chemical bonding process. Afterwards the CTCs are exposed to their antibodies, through which they will bind together and form CTCs with magnetic characteristics. Finally through exerting an...

Fuzzy ANN Approach to Support Independent Failures of Rotary Equipment Based on Vibration, Temperature Parameters-Case Study: A Centrifugal Pump in offshore Industry

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fouladi Vanda, Mohammad (Author) ; Ghaemi Osgouie, Kambiz (Supervisor) ; Ebrahimi Pour, Vahid (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Pump operating problems may be either hydraulic or mechanical and there is interdependence between the failure diagnoses of these two categories. Consequently, a correct diagnosis of a pump failure needs to consider many symptoms including hydraulic or mechanical causes. Nonlinear, time-varying behavior, and imprecise measurement information of the systems makes it difficult to deal with pump failures with precise mathematical equations, while human operators with the aid of their practical experience can handle these complex situations, with only a set of imprecise linguistic if-then rules and imprecise system states, but this procedure is time consuming and needs the knowledge of human...

Design, Simulation and Construction of a Rapid Gene Amplification Microfluidic Device Using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amadeh, Ali (Author) ; Shamloo, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Polymerase chain reaction method is a conventional method for obtaining multiple copies of a specified segment in the DNA molecule and to amplify the DNA molecule itself. Therefore, this method has been of paramount importance in different fields of research and has been applied for different applications. PCR requires thermal cycling, or repeated temperature changes between two or three discrete temperatures to amplify specific nucleic acid target sequences. To achieve such thermal cycling, conventional bench-top thermal cyclers generally use a metal heating block powered by Peltier elements or benefit from forced convection heat transfer. Although efforts have been made in order to reduce...

Aerodynamic Optimization of a Four Stage Centrifugal Flow Compressor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadi Yengejeh, Saba (Author) ; Ghorbanian, Kaveh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The performance of centrifugal compressors deviates from its best design point and reaches lower efficiencies by time and conversion of input gas properties such as the pressure, temperature, and mixture characteristics. By the fact that each designed compressor should have a wide range of functionality, redesign and optimization processes take place. One of the challenging methods for improving the performance of centrifugal compressors is to modify aerodynamic passage of gas in impellers in order to achieve better pressure ratio and efficiency. The aims of the current study are to evaluate geometry properties of the blades of the first or the second impeller and even the whole compressor...

Investigation of Flow Rate and Cooling Water Temperature Effects on the Process Parameters in Centrifuge Machine

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aghaei, Majid (Author) ; Otukesh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Safdari, Jaber (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Centrifuge is a method in which great gravitational-like forces are used. Gravitational forces which cause molecules to move and are relevant to molecular weight; can cause isotope separation. The separation of light isotope from heavy one is done with a centrifugal field which produces a pressure gradient for the gas mixture. Pressure gradient is different for each of the isotopes due to the dependence of pressure gradient to the mass of the materials. But the separation in this way is very limited. The capacity of separation can be brought up by producing an additional axial flow in the rotor. This rotational flow can be produced with internal or external incitement. Rotational flow with...

Comparing the Performance of Centrifuge, Membrane Filter and Filter Press for Clarification of Lipase Enzyme

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taher Aslani, Ahmad Reza (Author) ; Rousta Azad, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Lipases (Triacyl Glycerol Acyl Hydrolase, EC.3.1.1.3) are multidimensional biocatalysts which have many applications in food industrials, dairy, fats and oils processing, detergents, synthesis of pure chemical and pharmaceutical materials, paper industrial and cosmetics. Generally, industrial enzymes are produced extracellularly, so their separation from a low-cost complex medium (usually used for production) is one of the cost stages in their production process. Filtration is the most economical method of separation in the production of enzymes, but due to the small size of colloidal particles and cell masses present in the fermentation environment, its use is subject to limitations. In...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghadirianniari, Sahar (Author) ; Khosravi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The seismic behavior of pile-supported systems has been an active area of research over the past decades. However, focus has mostly been on evaluating the seismic response of structures embedded in either dry or fully saturated, especially liquefying soil conditions. In this study, a series of dynamic centrifuge tests have been conducted to investigate the effects of soil’s degree of saturation on the seismic behavior of pile-supported superstructures. The scaled physical model tests were carried out on two distinct pile-mass systems embedded in uniform sand layers. A steady state infiltration technique was used to control matric suction profiles in the sand layer prior to shaking. The...

Thermal Cyclic Effects on the Long-Term Behaviour of Elevated Floating Energy Pile Groups in Saturated Lightly Overconsolidated Clay by Centrifuge Modelling

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Farivar, Alireza (Author) ; Jafarzadeh, Fardin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There is an increasing interest and use of energy foundations worldwide. Heat transfer from/to energy piles may cause plastic contraction of soft clay with a low overconsolidation ratio (OCR) during heating and cooling. This can influence pile-soil interaction due to thermally induced excess pore water pressure and changes of lateral stress acting on the pile. These thermally induced phenomena cause additional plastic settlement of the soil and pile. The irreversible settlement may cause serviceability or even ultimate limit state problems for floating energy piles whose capacity is mainly derived from shaft resistance. Due to intended operational needs or by accident, cyclic non-symmetrical...
