    , Article European Spine Journal ; Volume 14, Issue 4 , 2005 , Pages 381-392 ; 09406719 (ISSN) Shirazi Adl, A ; El-Rich, M ; Pop, D. G ; Parnianpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
This work aimed to evaluate trunk muscle forces, internal loads and stability margin under some simulated standing postures, with and without external loads, using a nonlinear finite element model of the T1-S1 spine with realistic nonlinear load-displacement properties. A novel kinematics-based algorithm was applied that exploited a set of spinal sagittal rotations, initially calculated to minimize balancing moments, to solve the redundant active-passive system. The loads consisted of upper body gravity distributed along the spine with or without 200 N held in the hands, either in the front of the body or on the sides. Nonlinear and linear stability/perturbation analyses at deformed,...

    Abstract
In recent years, electromyogram signal (EMG) feature selection, based on wavelet transform, has received considerable attention. This study introduces a new multiwavelet function for surface EMG (sEMG) signal intended for tasks that involve hand movement recognition. To create the new wavelet function, several types of well known mother wavelet were exploited and through their integration the proposed mother wavelet was generated. The proposed wavelet function closely reproduced the characteristics of the EMG signal, while increasing the recognition accuracy of hand movements. We used eight unique classes of hand motions and considered the ability of various mother wavelets and the proposed...

    Abstract
Three-dimensional biocompatible porous structures can be fabricated using different methods. However, the biological and mechanical behaviors of scaffolds are the center of focus in bone tissue engineering. In this study, tricalcium phosphate scaffolds with similar porosity contents but different pore morphologies were fabricated using two different techniques, namely, the replica method and the pore-forming agent method. The samples fabricated using the pore-forming agent showed more than two times higher compressive and bending strengths and more than three times higher compressive moduli. Furthermore, a thin layer of agarose coating improved the compressive and bending strength of both...

    Abstract
The notion of compressibility of a random measure is a rather general concept which find applications in many contexts from data compression, to signal quantization, and parameter estimation. While compressibility for discrete and continuous measures is generally well understood, the case of discrete-continuous measures is quite subtle. In this paper, we focus on a class of multi-dimensional random measures that have singularities on affine lower-dimensional subsets. We refer to this class of random variables as affinely singular. Affinely singular random vectors naturally arises when considering linear transformation of component-wise independent discrete-continuous random variables. To...

Mathematical modeling of anisotropic hyperelastic cylindrical thick shells by incorporating thickness deformation and compressibility with application to arterial walls

    World Scientific  2022
    Abstract
This paper is devoted to mathematical modeling of anisotropic hyperelastic thick cylindrical shells like arteries by taking into account the volume compressibility and through-the-thickness deformation. To describe the hyperelastic behavior of this kind of shells and extract their constitutive relations, the modified anisotropic (MA) model is employed, which is able to characterize compressible behavior of hyperelastic materials like soft tissues. By considering the arterial segment as a thick cylindrical shell, the higher order thickness deformation shell theory together with nonlinear Green's strains are exploited to express its deformations and capture the thickness stretching effect. The...

    ASTM International  2022
    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and nanographene (GP) on the mechanical performance of the cementitious mortars were investigated in different environments. Six mix designs were fabricated by considering the previous studies and exposed to potable water, acidic, and alkaline environments. The GP and MWCNTs partially replaced the cement with 0.25 %, 0.5 %, and 1 % of its weight. The standard mechanical tests, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis were performed on the specimens. The results indicated that including the MWCNTs and GP increases the compressive strength by 10 % and 20 % and similarly improves the tensile...

    Abstract
All-flash storage (AFS) systems have become an essential infrastructure component to support enterprise applications, where sub-millisecond latency and very high throughput are required. Nevertheless, the price per capacity ofsolid-state drives (SSDs) is relatively high, which has encouraged system architects to adoptdata reduction techniques, mainlydeduplication andcompression, in enterprise storage solutions. To provide higher reliability and performance, SSDs are typically grouped usingredundant array of independent disk (RAID) configurations. Data reduction on top of RAID arrays, however, adds I/O overheads and also complicates the I/O patterns redirected to the underlying backend SSDs,...

    Abstract
Ground granulated blast furnace slag is a sustainable material and supplementary for cement in the concrete industry. Different behavioral aspects must be assessed to achieve reliable sustainable materials, including post-fire mechanical properties. One robust tool is the machine learning approach to train prediction models. In this regard, SVR hyper-parameters were tuned by the DE optimization algorithm. Four kernel functions were implemented in SVR formulation: linear, sigmoid,...

An improved multi-joint EMG-assisted optimization approach to estimate joint and muscle forces in a musculoskeletal model of the lumbar spine

    , Article Journal of Biomechanics ; Volume 44, Issue 8 , 2011 , Pages 1521-1529 ; 00219290 (ISSN) Gagnon, D ; Arjmand, N ; Plamondon, A ; Shirazi Adl, A ; Larivière, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Muscle force partitioning methods and musculoskeletal system simplifications are key modeling issues that can alter outcomes, and thus change conclusions and recommendations addressed to health and safety professionals. A critical modeling concern is the use of single-joint equilibrium to estimate muscle forces and joint loads in a multi-joint system, an unjustified simplification made by most lumbar spine biomechanical models. In the context of common occupational tasks, an EMG-assisted optimization method (EMGAO) is modified in this study to simultaneously account for the equilibrium at all lumbar joints (M-EMGAO). The results of this improved approach were compared to those of its...

Application of Sparse Modeling to MIMO Radars

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ajorloo, Abdollah (Author) ; Bastani, Mohammad Hassan (Supervisor) ; Amini, Arash (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to multiple transmit-receive channels, the signal model in a MIMO radar system is usually described by high dimensional data structures. However, the desired target space (e.g. range-azimuth domain) which shall be estimated, is mainly sparse (the number of existing targets is usually small). This observation has promoted the use of sparse recovery methods in multi-target detection and estimation in such radar systems which led to introducing the concept of compressive sensing (CS) based MIMO radars. Successful implementation of CS techniques for recovery of radar scenes (for target detection/estimation) from the received noisy measurements strongly entails that the associated sensing...

    Abstract
SUMMARY: In this paper, a numerical model is developed for the fully coupled hydro-mechanical analysis of deformable, progressively fracturing porous media interacting with the flow of two immiscible, compressible wetting and non-wetting pore fluids, in which the coupling between various processes is taken into account. The governing equations involving the coupled solid skeleton deformation and two-phase fluid flow in partially saturated porous media including cohesive cracks are derived within the framework of the generalized Biot theory. The fluid flow within the crack is simulated using the Darcy law in which the permeability variation with porosity because of the cracking of the solid...

A meta-model analysis of a finite element simulation for defining poroelastic properties of intervertebral discs

    Abstract
Finite element analysis is an effective tool to evaluate the material properties of living tissue. For an interactive optimization procedure, the finite element analysis usually needs many simulations to reach a reasonable solution. The metamodel analysis of finite element simulation can be used to reduce the computation of a structure with complex geometry or a material with composite constitutive equations. The intervertebral disc is a complex, heterogeneous, and hydrated porous structure. A poroelastic finite element model can be used to observe the fluid transferring, pressure deviation, and other properties within the disc. Defining reasonable poroelastic material properties of the...

    Abstract
The environmental impact of asbestos fibers on human health and their consequent safety-related problems indicate that there is a significant need to replace this material in all asbestos-containing products. Many different types of fibers have been introduced to replace asbestos fibers. In this study, the performance of silica nano-particles combined with waste paper pulp fibers (sulfite fibers) has been investigated. Different mechanical (compressive and flexural strengths and bending performance), durability (water absorption), physical (bulk density and flowability), and microstructural (scanning electron microscopy) tests were conducted to examine the properties of manufactured green...

    Abstract
In this paper, the buckling analysis of a multilayered composite cylindrical shell which volume fraction of its fiber varies according to power law in longitudinal direction, due to applied compressive axial load is studied. Rule of mixture model and reverse of that are employed to represent elastic properties of this fiber reinforced functionally graded composite. Strain displacement relations employed are based on Reissner-Naghdi-Berry's shell theory. The displacement finite element model of the equilibrium equations is derived by employing weak form formulation. The Lagrangian shape function for in-plane displacements and Hermitian shape function for displacement in normal direction to...

    Abstract
In this paper, a mathematical model is presented for the analysis of dynamic fracture propagation in the saturated porous media. The solid behavior incorporates a discrete cohesive fracture model, coupled with the flow in porous media through the fracture network. The double-nodded zero-thickness cohesive interface element is employed for the mixed mode fracture behavior in tension and contact behavior in compression. The crack is automatically detected and propagated perpendicular to the maximum effective stress. The spatial discretization is continuously updated during the crack propagation. Numerical examples from the hydraulic fracturing test and the concrete gravity dam show the...
