Novel adaptive Kalman filtering and fuzzy track fusion approach for real time applications

    , Article 2008 3rd IEEE Conference on Industrial Electronics and Applications, ICIEA 2008, Singapore, 3 June 2008 through 5 June 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 120-125 ; 9781424417186 (ISBN) Dehghani Tafti, A ; Sadati, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The track fusion combines individual tracks formed by different sensors. Tracks are usually obtained by Kalman Filter (KF), since it is suitable for real-time application. The KF is an optimal linear estimator when the measurement noise has a Gaussian distribution with known covariance. However, in practice, some of the sensors do not have these properties, and the traditional KF is not an optimal estimator. In this paper, a novel adaptive Kalman filter (NAKF) is proposed. In this approach, the measurement noise covariance is adjusted by using an introduced simple mathematical function of one variable, called the degree of matching (DoM), where it is defined on the basis of covariance...

Assessment of offshore structures under extreme wave conditions by Modified Endurance Wave Analysis

    , Article Marine Structures ; Volume 39 , December , 2014 , Pages 50-69 ; ISSN: 09518339 Dastan Diznab, M. A ; Mohajernassab, S ; Seif, M. S ; Tabeshpour, M. R ; Mehdigholi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Recently, various approaches have been introduced to estimate the response of offshore structures in different sea states by stepwisely intensifying records. In this article, a more practical approach entitled Modified Endurance Wave Analysis (MEWA) considering the random and probabilistic nature of wave loading and utilizing optimal time duration is introduced. Generation procedure of this approach is described based on two practical wave theories: random and constrained new-wave. In addition, assessment of a simplified model representing a typical fixed offshore platform under extreme wave conditions in the Persian Gulf is performed making use of MEWA. A comparative analysis has been also...

Dissipative particle dynamics simulation of electroosmotic flow in nanoscale channels

, Article 48th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, Orlando, FL, 4 January 2010 through 7 January 2010 ; 2010 ; 9781600867392 (ISBN) Darbandi, M ; Zakeri, R ; Schneider, G. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
This Paper presents the simulation of electroosmotic flow in nanochannels using the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) method. Most of the past electroosmotic phenomenon studies have been carried out using the continuum flow assumptions. However, there are many electroosmotic applications in nanoscales NEMS and microscales MEMS, which need to be treated using non-continuum flow assumptions. We simulate the electroosmotic flow within the mesoscopic scale using the DPD method. Contrary to the ordinary molecular dynamics method, the DPD method provides less computational costs. We will show that the current DPD results are in very good agreement with other available non-DPD results. To expand...

Radiative heat transfer modeling in numerical simulation of a heavy duty steam generator

    , Article 54th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 2016, 4 January 2016 through 8 January 2016 ; 2016 ; 9781624103933 (ISBN) Darbandi, M ; Abrar, B ; Barezban, M. B ; Schneider, G.E ; Shamsaei, Y ; Nematollahi, M ; Sharif Universty of Technology

    Abstract
The proper modeling of radiation is of great importance in numerical simulation of combustion processes. A simple gray weighted-sum-of-gray-gases (WSGG) model has been intensively used in CFD simulations of industrial combustion applications, mainly because of its low computational costs. However, the gray assumption is far from the real behavior of non-gray combustion gases. This could consequently affect the accuracy of temperature field and heat flux distribution predictions. On the other hand, modern non-gray global radiation models such as the standard spectral line-based weighted-sum-od-gray-gases (SLW) model are still computationally expensive for many engineering purposes. To...

Multi-label learning in the independent label sub-spaces

    , Article Pattern Recognition Letters ; Volume 97 , 2017 , Pages 8-12 ; 01678655 (ISSN) Barezi, E. J ; Kwok, J. T ; Rabiee, H. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The objective in multi-label learning problems is simultaneous prediction of many labels for each input instance. During the past years, there were many proposed embedding based approaches to solve this problem by considering label dependencies and decreasing learning and prediction cost. However, compressing the data leads to lose part of information included in label space. The idea in this work is to divide the whole label space to some independent small groups which leads to independent learning and prediction for each small group in the main space, rather than transforming to the compressed space. We use subspace clustering approaches to extract these small partitions such that the...

    , Article Geothermics ; Volume 101 , 2022 ; 03756505 (ISSN) Bahmani, M.H ; Hakkaki Fard, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Horizontal Ground Heat Exchangers (HGHE) as a means of exploiting geothermal energy has come to the fore for a few decades. Various analytical and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods have been proposed to predict the performance of the HGHEs. The available analytical approaches are fast; however, they are based on various simplifications and assumptions, affecting their accuracy. On the other hand, CFD methods are more accurate, but their computational cost is a burden. Therefore there is an acute need for an accurate and fast method for predicting the long-term performance of HGHEs. To this aim, this study puts forward a novel hybrid analytical-numerical model for predicting the...

    Abstract
In this study, a Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (DPSO) algorithm is assimilated to solve the Transit Network Design Problem (TNDP). First, A Mixed Integer Model is developed for the TNDP. The solution methodology utilized here is made of two major elements. A route generation module is firstly developed to generate all the feasible transit lines. Through the second part, a DPSO algorithm is utilized to select the optimal set of lines from the constructed ones. The objective function is to maximize coverage index while satisfying the operator cost upper level constraints. The efficacy and accuracy of the implemented algorithms is compared with ones obtained by an enumeration process as...

Enhanced smart-card-based authentication scheme providing forward-secure key agreement

    , Article 1st IFIP International Conference on New Technologies, Mobility and Security, NTMS 2007, Paris, 2 May 2007 through 4 May 2007 ; 2007 , Pages 447-458 ; 9781402062698 (ISBN) Asadpour, M ; Sattarzadeh, B ; Jalili, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Kluwer Academic Publishers  2007
    Abstract
Many smart-card-based remote authentication schemes have been proposed recently. In 2004, Yoon et al. presented an improved scheme which is the leading of a research track started from Sun, 2000. In this paper, we illustrate that Yoon et al.'s scheme is vulnerable to the parallel session attack and propose an enhancement of the scheme to resist that attack. In our scheme the parties further establish a forward-secure session key by employing only hash functions to protect the subsequent communications. We also demonstrate that our scheme has better security in comparison to other related works, while it does not incur much computational cost © 2007 Springer

    Abstract
Structures of tapered geometry are customarily used in a variety of applications. The analysis of such structures is usually made through finite element method using traditional beam, shell or brick elements. In this paper, a new tapered superelement is presented that lends itself to modeling revolving geometries under lateral, axial and torsional loads. The presented tapered superelement has 16 nodes. The performance of this element under static and dynamic loading and in rotating condition is examined. It is shown that this element yields accurate results with higher computational efficiency compared to conventional elements. Furthermore, it is verified that a single tapered superelement...

Persian text classification based on topic models

    , Article 24th Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2016, 10 May 2016 through 12 May 2016 ; 2016 , Pages 86-91 ; 9781467387897 (ISBN) Ahmadi, P ; Tabandeh, M ; Gholampour, I ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
With the extensive growth in information, text classification as one of the text mining methods, plays a vital role in organizing and management information. Most text classification methods represent a documents collection as a Bag of Words (BOW) model and then use the histogram of words as the classification features. But in this way, the number of features is very large; therefore performing text classification faces serious computational cost problems. Moreover, the BOW representation is unable to recognize semantic relations between words. Recently, topic-model approaches have been successfully applied for text classification to overcome the problems of BOW. Our main goal in this paper...

    Abstract
This paper presents a new and simple algorithm for partitioning the input domain for implementation of Active Learning Method (ALM) algorithm. ALM is a pattern-based algorithm for soft computing which uses the Ink Drop Spread (IDS) algorithm as its main engine for feature extraction. In this paper a simple algorithm is introduced with a few computation cost. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, it is applied to two applications, system modeling and pattern recognition. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our algorithm in specifying the appropriate points for dividing the inputs domains

Weight-based colour constancy using contrast stretching

    , Article IET Image Processing ; Volume 15, Issue 11 , 2021 , Pages 2424-2440 ; 17519659 (ISSN) Abedini, Z ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
One of the main issues in colour image processing is changing objects' colour due to colour of illumination source. Colour constancy methods tend to modify overall image colour as if it was captured under natural light illumination. Without colour constancy, the colour would be an unreliable cue to object identity. Till now, many methods in colour constancy domain are presented. They are in two categories; statistical methods and learning-based methods. This paper presents a new statistical weighted algorithm for illuminant estimation. Weights are adjusted to highlight two key factors in the image for illuminant estimation, that is contrast and brightness. The focus was on the convex part of...

Unsupervised, fast and efficient colour-image copy protection

    , Article IEE Proceedings: Communications ; Volume 152, Issue 5 , 2005 , Pages 605-616 ; 13502425 (ISSN) Abadpour, A ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
The ubiquity of broadband digital communications and mass storage in modern society has stimulated the widespread acceptance of digital media. However, easy access to royalty-free digital media has also resulted in a reduced perception in society of the intellectual value of digital media and has promoted unauthorised duplication practices. To detect and discourage the unauthorised duplication of media, researchers have investigated watermarking methods to embed ownership data into media. However, some authorities have expressed doubt over the efficacy of watermarking methods to protect digital media. The paper introduces a novel method to discourage unauthorised duplication of digital...
