    Abstract
In this paper, a new software is introduced that is developed to give the most appropriate solution for the component selection and design of a hybrid electric bus. There are several simulation programs that can simulate behavior of a hybrid electric bus, but most of them are not able to suggest the best design and the best choice of the components. Customer requirements are dissimilar and there are several different parameters that they may need. Cost, pollution, driving cycle, battery type, DC link voltage, weight, volume, fuel consumption, and acceleration are some parameters that vary from one customer to the other. The stated software that is developed and presented by this paper will...

    Abstract
Protection systems play a major role in the performance of electric power systems. There are a number of techniques such as redundancy within the relay system or local and remote backup methods to improve protection system reliability to remove faults as fast as possible, coordination of protective relays is very important. Also availability to neighboring systems affects significantly on repair time after occurring an event. An approach is presented in this paper to incorporate relay coordination and alternative supply availability on radial sub-transmission system reliability. For this purpose, a computer program has been developed. As a case study, a practical 63 KV sub-transmission...

    , Article DETC2005: ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference, Long Beach, CA, 24 September 2005 through 28 September 2005 ; Volume 7 B , 2005 , Pages 903-909 ; 0791847446 (ISBN) Tavakoli Nia, H ; Alemohammad, S. H ; Bagheri, S ; Khiabani, R. H ; Meghdari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this paper a new approach to dynamics optimization of rough terrain rovers is introduced. Since rover wheels traction has a significant role in rover mobility, optimization is based on the minimization of traction at rover wheel-ground interfaces. The method of optimization chosen is Genetic Algorithm (GA) which is a directed random search technique along with the usual optimization based on directional derivatives. GA is a suitable and efficient method of optimization for nonlinear problems. The procedure is applied on a specific rough terrain rover called CEDRA-I Shrimp Rover. Dynamical equations are obtained using Kane's method. Finally, the results are verified by modeling of the...

    Abstract
Traditionally, flying and handling quality evaluation of an aircraft in various flight phases is aimed at pilot workload assessment to guarantee a successful mission. Subsequently, Different levels of acceptability are defined for the aircraft based on the additional work required by the pilot to achieve a desired performance level, feting scales are usually numerical, which pilots utilize as a mean to quantify their subjective opinion about an existing aircraft after hours of flying. Cornell aeronautical laboratory used their own scales in flying qualities research for many years and Cooper of NASA originated a ten-point numerical scale that was used more universally. When Harper of Cornell...

    Abstract
System fault-tree analysis is a technique for modeling dependability that is in widespread use. For systems such as embedded systems that include both hardware and software, the integration of hardware and software fault trees has proved problematic. In this paper, we present a method for reliability and safety analysis of embedded systems modeled by SystemC language. The evaluation is based on the fault trees generated from both hardware and software parts of the embedded systems described in the unified language. The unified modeling of both hardware and software of embedded systems using SystemC enables designers to be early aware from the safety and reliability of their designs more...

A robust page segmentation method for Persian/Arabic documents

    , Article WSEAS Transactions on Computers ; Volume 4, Issue 11 , 2005 , Pages 1692-1698 ; 11092750 (ISSN) Shirali Shahreza, M. H ; Shirali Shahreza, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) softwares are widely used in the office automation systems. One of the first steps in the recognition of the documents is to segment the input image. Various methods have been offered for the English language. For the Persian/Arabic Language, however, no complete method has been found yet. In this paper we present a new page segmentation method for Persian/Arabic printed texts. This method has been inspired by the effect of the spreading of ink on paper. One of the most important characteristics of this method is its non-sensitivity to rotation

A modelling tool for hierarchical stochastic activity networks

    , Article Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory ; Volume 13, Issue 6 , 2005 , Pages 505-524 ; 1569190X (ISSN) Azgomi, M. A ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Hierarchical stochastic activity networks (HSANs) are a newly introduced extension of stochastic activity networks (SANs). HSAN models encapsulate hierarchies and a key benefit of these models is the possibility of automatic employment of composition techniques by their modelling tools. For modelling and evaluation with HSANs, we have developed a software tool called SANBuilder. This tool has an integrated development environment (IDE) for construction, animation, simulation and analytic solution of SAN-based models. We have implemented in this tool some state-of-the-art methods for the simulation and analytic solution of SAN and HSAN models. In addition to an introduction to HSANs, this...

A performance model of software-based deadlock recovery routing algorithm in hypercubes

    , Article Parallel Processing Letters ; Volume 15, Issue 1-2 , 2005 , Pages 153-168 ; 01296264 (ISSN) Khonsari, A ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Ould Khaoua, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Recent studies have revealed that deadlocks are generally infrequent in the network. Thus the hardware resources, e.g. virtual channels, dedicated for deadlock avoidance are not utilised most of the time. This consideration has motivated the development of novel adaptive routing algorithms with deadlock recovery. This paper describes a new analytical model to predict message latency in hypercubes with a true fully adaptive routing algorithm with progressive deadlock recovery. One of the main features of the proposed model is the use of results from queueing systems with impatient customers to capture the effects of the timeout mechanism used in this routing algorithm for deadlock detection....

    Abstract
A large number of people are exposed to whole body vibration in their occupational life. Measuring vibration is an important tool in rehabilitation and biomechanical fields of research. We have proposed image processing as a new method to record and determine the frequency response of human body. The arranged set up for forced vibration consisted of an AC motor, a variable speed drive unit and a shaking table for producing one directional sinusoidal vibration. Volunteers were asked to stand on the shaking table at a relaxed posture. Two digital camcorders were used to capture the motion of colored pencil-dot markers on the skin of human body (forehead) and on the edge of the shaking table....

Overhead-free polymorphism in network-on-chip implementation of object-oriented models

    , Article Proceedings - Design, Automation and Test in Europe Conference and Exhibition, DATE 04, Paris, 16 February 2004 through 20 February 2004 ; Volume 2 , 2004 , Pages 1380-1381 ; 0769520855 (ISBN); 9780769520858 (ISBN) Goudarzi, M ; Hessabi, S ; Mycroft, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
We unify virtual-method despatch (polymorphism implementation) and network packet-routing operations; virtual-method calls correspond to network packets, and network addresses are allocated such that routing the packet corresponds to dispatching the call. As the run-time routing structure is inherent in Network-on-Chip platforms, this unification implements polymorphism/or free.1

    Abstract
As product complexity increases and economic constraints result in a demand for greater efficiency, industry must invest in new innovative ways to assist design and manufacture. As a first step in the long-term development of such a system, a computer software environment has been developed for pre- and post-processing for unstructured grid-based computational simulation. This paper describes the powder compaction software (PCS_SUT), which is designed for pre- and post-processing for computational simulation of the compaction of powder. Pre-processing software is used to create the model, generate an appropriate finite element grid, apply the appropriate boundary conditions, and view the...
